By providing different learning experiences in the curriculum teachers will be able to meet the needs of each student’s learning style. For ELL students, New Caney Elementary offers Bilingual programs dedicated to teach both languages, Spanish and English, that will essentially allow ELL students to learn the language. Programs like these were created to help students to thrive academically no matter their circumstance. To assess students at all times, one as a future educator must ensure that we are assessing the students in each lesson plan. The teacher must ensure that each student is grasping the content presented to them by monitoring their gained knowledge. In order implement the units from the curriculum, I will strive to provide various learning experiences to each student. I will provide visual activities for my visual learners, have hands on activities for my hands-on learning students, and provide discussions for the ones that learn through hearing and repeating things out loud. Haiti, the small country located west of the Dominican Republic, is a unique and beautiful country with its own unique culture and geography. The people of Haiti are proud of their country and their culture. Even though the nation is plagued by earthquakes and storms, due to its geographic location, it does not stop the Haitian people from continuing their unique culture and happy lifestyle. Taking a look at this country’s culture and geography, anyone, civilian, military or political personnel can fully grasp and understand the country’s uniqueness.

When thinking of my memories it’s as if you were surfing through TV channels. Some making me wish I could go back to that day and relive it. Some I hope I will never have to relive. Most memories make me smile and think of how much I want to be little again. Although at that age, all I wanted was to grow up and live my own life. My memories can range from being at home to being anywhere but home. Although, some stick out more than others. One of those few fond memories is going to the Dominican Republic with my family.

On September 23 of 2013, half a million of Haitians living in the Dominican Republic woke up to the unfortunate ruling made by the country’s Central Electoral Board. The ruling TC-168-13 called for the denationalization of Dominican born civilians if at least one of their parents are not a citizen of the nation. Because the highest population of immigrants living in the Dominican Republic are Haitians, this decision is hurting them the most. Now, these people are not able to attain governmental or legal papers, making daily transactions difficult to fulfill, receive medical attention,

Immigrants have a large impact on our nation. They make up quite a bit of our population. They also do a plethora of jobs here in the U.S. They also introduce new aspects of culture to our melting pot of society. They help further our already astoundingly diverse country.

In 2015 my grandmother died. When I received the news I was on the couch and my mother told me “Miguel we have to talk” I was sweating because my mother was so serious and she told me that my grandmother was dead, and in that moment all I could think about was being back in the Dominican Republic, growing up with her, imagining the moments I spent in her house and the mornings that I sat in her living room, watching TV and smelling her amazing food wafting through the pass-through window from the kitchen. Then I snap back on reality and realize the future my grandmother would want for me.

When people think of gifts, they often think of something they have received from Christmas or from a birthday. One of the most special gifts I have ever received was not from a holiday or for a birthday. My most prized gift was from two little girls, Alexandria and Tatianna, in a different country. When I went to the Dominican Republic with a big group of people for a mission trip, I received three colorful bracelets from two of the sweetest girls a few days before we traveled home. These bracelets were my most prized gift for many reasons.

This past summer I took a trip to the Dominican Republic. I spent two weeks in a small town called Bayahibe. I went with a group of sixteen people and all of the others were learning spanish in school. I had no prior knowledge of spanish, so I had trouble communicating with the locals. I felt most left out when we took a break from our marine service and held a summer camp for a day. I tried my best to communicate with the kids but I had only been there for a week and had not gotten used to the accent or the language. The children migrated towards the others in my group who spoke spanish. I responded by using clapping, high fiving and hugs while we played games to show the children that they were doing great instead of trying to speak spanish.

To serve others is to minister and help others in various ways; it is not an act to do for show or publicity, but simply to enrich and help the lives of others and your own life. Everyone can serve one another in some form or fashion without even realizing the impact. Over my high school and college career, I have volunteered for a multitude of community service projects, ranging from mission trips, to serving the local HESED house children. Although, out of all of these projects, the one that leaves a lasting impact to me was the mission trip to the Dominican Republic.

Throughout the program, my placement was set at the Abraham Friedman Occupational Center. The students were predominantly Spanish-speaking adults who lived in downtown Los Angeles. The program was ESL Intermediate High B that integrated language skills. Since October last year, I devoted seventy hours to observation and taught four lessons totaling five hours. The guiding teacher Mr. Buckley was an inspiring educator who created a variety of classroom activities.

Brian turned his stare to Mr. Smith and voiced his displeasure. “Maybe I was not understood, Tim… I want Ms. Loran to accompany Mr. Johnson and me to the Dominican Republic. She can provide valuable assistance to Mr. Johnson since the main language in the country is Spanish, and she is fluent in the language.” I should not be surprised to learn he was aware I spoke four languages, but I was.

Haiti is an independent black republic proud of its fashioned French, African, and Caribbean culture. So why are so many Haitians fleeing their homeland to their neighboring partner, Dominican Republic? First, let’s look at some key facts about Haiti. With those key facts we can see why Haitians in large amounts want to migrate to the Dominican Republic. Second, we can discuss the Dominican Republic being a place of possibilities. Final we will discuss how Dominicans feel about letting Haitians in to their country.

For my EDBE 4470 course I was required to administer four assessments to a non-native English speaker. I had the opportunity of working with Angie; I left out her last name to ensure her family’s privacy. Angie is a 4th grader at Brandenburg Elementary School, enrolled in a bilingual program. The way this particular program works is one week the curriculum is taught in English and the next week it is taught in Spanish. Unfortunately I did not have the opportunity to hear her speak Spanish; this would have been helpful to compare her proficiency in both. Angie lives with her parents and her three year old brother Eduardo. Her parents are considering transferring her to a better school down the block; they question if she is getting the education she deserves.

The Colonial Zone is unique in many ways. It is the historic central part of Santo Domingo and the first permanent European settlement of the Western Hemisphere. The area is home to the many of the first’s in the Americas being built such as the first cathedral, cathedral Santa Maria la Menor; the first paved road, Calle las damas; the first hospital; and many others. Due to its high number of landmarks and along with many modern comforts built like favourable restaurants and nightclubs, the Colonial Zone is one of the most popular tourist attraction in Dominican Republic.

Ms. CW has been an educator for over eight years and has taught PK-5th grade music, 3rd grade Writing and Science, 4th grade Writing, Social Studies, and Math, 5th grade math, and is now a Principal in Garland ISD. She has earned numerous degrees and certificates like a Bachelors in Music, Master’s in Educational Administration and certificates in Music EC-12, Generalist EC-6, and Principal EC-12. Ms. CW’s main focus in the classroom was improving students writing and grammar skills to help them be better prepared in the future.
