A benefit to settling in the Middle colonies benefits was that they were not strict about anything. There was desirable land that could be acquired easily and prevailing social and economic equality. They embraced everyone who wanted to settle, regardless of who they were. There was freedom of religion, ethnic diversity and they were very against slavery.
The Northern Colonies as an Empire of Goods” by T.H. Breen deals with how the economic developments of the 1740s affected the economic relationship between the colonies and Great Britain. Basically merchants started to arrive along with new supplies which led to the colonists to depend on the British. In the beginning they refused to have to go to the merchants so, whenever they were in need of any goods, they would go knocking on their neighbor’s door. The merchants were the last resort. This introduced them to what was almost the opposite of the lineal family. Once the population in the their area started to rise , many picked up and traveled towards west. At this point in time, the British importations increased tremendously.
Over the previous 150 years the colonies had attracted an ever-increasing number of immigrants and grown steadily in themselves so that they now contained significant urban centers such as Philadelphia and Boston, a large population free and slave of 1,593,625 in 1770, an abundance of land with the prospect of more to the west -now free bar the Indians rapidly being more fully used by the growing population it attracted, and a growing number of manufacturing industries. These were significant because the traditional model of colonies had been to serve as exporters of raw materials and staple goods to Britain and purchasers of manufactured goods, all along the protected trading lines of the Navigation Act. But the mainland American colonies
When we think of our country now, we think about how it is separated into states, but back then the states were part of colonies. Some of the main colonies were the Chesapeake colonies which consisted of Virginia and Maryland, the middle colonies were Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York, and lastly, the New England colonies which were Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. In the colonial regions of New England, Chesapeake and the middle colonies they all share similarities and differences, most predominantly shown in family life, rank and status.
Because of the differences in geography and climate in each region, each colony had a set of jobs that worked best with their conditions. The New England Colonies relied mainly on fishing, whaling, ship making and selling lumber. This is because the soil in the New England Colonies was poor and rocky, which made it difficult to farm. However, the New England Colonies were right by the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, so they whaled and fished easily. Once they discovered how much money could be made off of slave-trading, and it soon became one of the largest slave-trading centers in the world. They also had many dense forests, so they builts ships out of the lumber and also sold it to England and the other colonies. The area still has many forests, but there are way less dense than they were back in the colonial days.
The Plymouth colony that was part of the New England colonies, the Indians had rescued the floundering Plymouth settlement. The Samoset had accomplish the language of english from the contact that they had with sailors and fishermen that had visited the coast making repairs before the Plymouth settlers arrived. Wampanoag Indians also own territory in Plymouth. Squanto was a special instrument sent of god for the good of the Pilgrims. But also the Pilgrims managed the harvest enough food for the winter, in the other hand, Pennsylvania in numbers exceeded by the great Puritan migration to the New England. In the year of 1682 and 1685, almost eight thousand immigrant arrived to Pennsylvania. English economic policies toward the colonies were
Down in the southern colonies the climate was usually mild and warm. The soil was fertile allowing crops to be grown. Farmers would either use the crops to eat or they would sell them, which would also be known as a cash crop. This is a crop not used for the farmers use, but to sell instead. Its surprising how the southerners managed to survive and thrive without the amazing inventions we have come to know today. Many of the inventions could have been extremely helpful in the southern colonies if people could travel back in time.
Looking for a religiously tolerant colony. Come to the middle colonies which include Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. The economy in the middle colonies consists of farming, crops, trading, and the manufacturing of iron ore products. We have a flexible social structure, but we have a large middle class that consists of artisans, entrepreneurs, and small farmers. Men and women are treated equally so don’t be afraid of sexism. Some of the geographical features in the middle colonies include fertile soil, rolling hills, and the Hudson and Delaware river for trading. Our government is governed by landowners in our colonies. We are not dominated by any religion which offers religious freedoms to anybody. Come and move to the middle
The different region and culture difference between the colonies is one reason for the development. The New England colonies were mostly religious reformers and separatists. Their main focus was to find a new way of life by finding new ways to worship God. The Middle colonies were more welcoming to people that were from various and different lifestyles. The Southern Colonies were less involved with religion and were more focused on seeking the natural resources to provide material
This caused hubs of ideas and people were able to invent new technologies faster because this. With new technologies, the New England colonies were able to settle other places that were far away, including Hawaii. People also ended up living longer; the cool climate didn’t allow many diseases which made the average citizen live to about seventy years of age. This had an effect on women's rights in the north since, unlike the south, their husbands didn’t die young the government didn’t build in any legislation about gaining wealth. In fact, rules were put in that said when married, all of the wife’s things, prospects, land, wealth, were now her husband's. Another reason for differences between the Northern colonies and the Southern colonies were their initial reactions to the Natives. While eventually in the North most of the Natives were wiped out, at first the colonists tried to be peaceful and speak to them. This happened as a result of the large Iroquois Confederacy which was so vast it frightened the colonists. The confederacy was also easier to relate to since it had rules and regulations much like their own government, while Natives in the south went by their own
One of the biggest difference in the 3 different colonial regions was their Economies. Due to the rich and fertile soil that the Southern colonies possessed along with the warm climate of the area, farming was a main source of income. Wealthy Englishmen set up huge plantations with hundreds of acres of land in order to farm cash crops and other goods. The less fortunate would subsistence farm inland in hopes of one day being able to run a large plantation of their own. The economy in the middle colonies also relied on farming to an extent. They grew staple crops in excess earning them the name of the “Breadbasket Colony”. Due to the deep harbors and thick forests ship building was also a common practice in the middle colonies. The many harbors in the middle colonies also made trade a very important part of
Once New York was established as part of the British Empire, many sources choose to focus solely on New York’s history. However, many also focus on New York as part of a greater entity, the Middle colonies, explaining how the development of the colonies as a whole affected New York. Each colony was unique, and their lifestyle was tailored to fit their needs depending on their environment. Tracing the development of slavery, Judaism, and Leisler's Rebellion can explain why New York grew similarly to some colonies, while still maintaining its own unique qualities. Slavery had a big impact on the development of the colonies in America, and each region used slavery in different ways to benefit their economy.
The middle colonies had many varying motives for founding, religious, economic foundations, and political development. Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey all have different reasons for the creation of the colony. Pennsylvania was claimed by William Penn because he wanted a safe place for his, and everyone else’s, religion. New York, however, was founded because the Dutch were seeking great riches; although Henry Hudson, an English explorer they employed, did not find a shortcut through North America, he did claim the land for the Dutch. Comparatively, New Jersey was established and inhabited for its rich and fertile soil. Moreover, New York had different religious motives than those of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. New York, being founded
The main purpose of the settlers going to the conlines is because they had religious freedom there without persecution . This is what everyone was looking for because in England there was a power struggle against the puritans and King . Another reason settlers settled in the middle colonies was because there was a good government , so they could vote for who they wanted in the house. It was the people who wanted to start over who went to the middle colonies because they wanted to get away from the monarchy in England and if that meant that they went to the southern colonies . so they wanted to go to the middle colonies because of those certain things. Then they settled in the southern colonies because they would plant lots of crops there
Our colony has prospered greatly. The colony has a worry-free environment. People can go out and not be afraid of getting hurt. The laws in place insure peace, justice, and equality. The education provides citizens of all ages the knowledge to take care of themselves.
Historians often question why Europe had such an advantage over the three existing worlds during the 16th and 17th century. Europe managed to take over the New World—even though they were greatly out-numbered by the native people—due to the fact that Europeans were at both a material and cultural advantage. Europeans took command over the New World because their technology was superior to that of the Native people, they were more organized politically speaking, and they had a capitalist attitude toward the New World.
