Technology advances are encouraging a sedentary lifestyle for children. A study done by the Kaiser Family Foundation done in 2012, showed that children ages seven to eighteen spend seven and a half hours daily their phones or on social media (Kelly). They found that children spend four and a half hours watching TV, two and a half hours listening to music, one hour on the computer, and thirteen minutes playing video games a day (Kelly).When children are watching TV or playing video games, they are mindlessly eating, not knowing how many calories they are taking in. The key to stay healthy is to maintain a balance between energy intake and outtake (Perry). Playing video games and sitting on the couch watching TV is not a way to burn energy. Technology and emotion distress can be rooted back to a child’s weight.

When we look at the Ecosystem in terms of this television show the mother would come home and yell at the children because she was tired and they had not cleaned all day while she was at work. This would then effect the children negatively because she was at home and yelling. The job itself many not affect the child, but her attitude from working long hours did. Therefore “this component of the exosystem can have a profound influence on the child even though the child is not directly involved.” (Bronfenbrenner, n.d.) Lastly we look at the Macrosystem. When we look at the Macrosystem in regards to this television show I would focus on change. “Changes within the Macrosystem will result in changes in other systems which will affect the child.” (Bronfenbrenner, n.d.) When it comes to change I look at the mother’s job. The change from one job to two jobs can affect the dynamics of the household and then in turn the children. They may not know why the mothers needed two jobs, so her not having the two jobs could affect the children in a negative way and then her having two jobs could keep the children from being affected by any

Microsystem is the most direct relationship. The microsystem consists of close family members, caregivers, school, child care, and parents. The exosystem contains ecological elements that have a great influence on a child's development, but this ecological element is not involved with the child directly. The exosystem consists of child care regulations, training opportunities, parent’s workplace, neighbors, extended family members and availability of health services.

Johnson (2006) eloquently talks about healthcare systems as “cumbersome, unwieldy, unfriendly and opaque to its users” (Johnson, 2006, p. i10). It is the challenge of this post to take the clinical microsystem where I practice, the HIV Health Service Center clinic, and discuss the interrelationships of this microsystem to the microsystems of other primary care clinics in the county system. The main role of the mesosystem is to support the microsystems. According to Bronfenbrenner’s ecological system’s theory, the mesosystem contains the relationship between two systems, or between the primary care clinics in the county system and the macrosystem which contains both the microsystem and the mesosystem. Moreover, the Multnomah County Health Department could be identified as the macrosystem here or we could identify the larger state system as the macrosystem. Communication between systems is an area that could be enhanced to improve overall functioning of the clinics.

The Microsystem includes the environment surrounding the child, such as peers, family and school. The Mesosystem is the connections between microsystems, such as Home system into School system. Then there’s the Exosystem, exterior to his/her experience where the environment in which an individual is not directly involved. The Macrosystem is the cultural value in which people live along with their expectations. Lastly is Chrono-system and that’s the events happening in a child’s life; the influence of personal history. The ecological systems theory observes how the environment and the systems within it can affect an individual’s emotional, psychological, and physical health. Meaning, development is largely influenced by social relationships and surroundings. The microsystem is the system closest to the individual and the one in which they have direct contact with. Some examples include the household, school, or work environment. A microsystem typically includes family, teachers, peers, or caregivers. The mesosystem consists of the interactions between the different fragments of an individual’s microsystem. The mesosystem is where a person 's individual microsystems do not function independently, but rather are interconnected and assert influence upon one another. Lastly, the macrosystem encompasses the cultural environment in which factors such as economy, religion, politics, values, and culture all interact with one another, and therefore shape an individual.
