I found Michelle Alexander’s argument extremely effective to show the ways in which the history of America has been denied by the constant struggle between those who exacerbate the racial caste system, subordinating people of color to an inferior social position, and those who advocate for racial equality. In the introduction to The New Jim Crow, the author acknowledges her own reluctance, because of her biases and assumptions, to accept the harsh realities that her experience and research came to teach her about race, drugs, and criminal justice in the United States. No matter how dedicated to racial and social justice as an African American woman, she failed to see the other America that was hidden from her in plain sight. A new “caste system”
