Waging a war within ones own head and not being able to control ones own thoughts or feelings. Millions of adolescence throughout the United States are currently sick, living with a mental illness with no idea how to treat it, or even the idea they are sick. Mental Health services on campus may be the answer to treating the diseases many children are suffering from. Mental health is defined as our emotional psychological and social well-being. It affects how one thinks, feels and acts. Mental health also helps determine how someone handles stress, relate to others and make choices. Maintaining healthy mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence and throughout adulthood. People who suffer from mental health disorders often see a change in one’s own mood, thinking and behavior. One in 5 Americans adults experience a mental health issue. One in 10 young people experienced a period of major depression. And 1 in 20 Americans lived with a serious mental health illness (Mental Health Myths and Facts). Factors contribute to mental health problems including; biological facts, such as genes or brain chemistry, life experiences, such as traumatic events or abuse, or family history or mental health problems. According to Oxford dictionaries, mental health is defined as a person’s condition with regard to their psychological and emotional well-being. In America, 1 in 5 Adults, being over 40 million Americans, have a mental health condition (National Alliance on Mental Health). Although what causes most mental disorders and health issues are not entirely known, many of these problems are by a combination of psychological, biological, and environmental components: one of the biggest being environmental factors, which includes situations involving poverty.

Psychiatry is a branch of medicine that is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of emotional, mental and behavioural disorders. With recent life style most of us are suffering from psychological issues one or other. Every year, nearly 42.5 million American adults suffer from some psychiatric issues. One in four adults that is approximately 61.5 million citizens experiences mental illness in a given year; around 13.6 million live with a serious mental illness such as chronic depression, bipolar disorder and Schizophrenia; about 20% of youth of age 13 to 18 experience severe mental disorders and for ages 8 to 15 the estimate is around 13%. Despite effective treatment, there are long delays sometimes decades between the first appearance of symptoms and when people get help. American spends nearly $193.2 billion for serious mental illness per year. Psychiatric disorder such as depression can be listed in top 3 causes of hospitalization in the U.S. for both young and adults between ages 18 to 44. Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the U.S.A; more than 90% of those who die by suicide had one or more mental disorders.
The introduction portion of chapter 12 emphasized in depth on the definition of mental health, which I personally found essential to understand. According to our text, mental health is “how we think, feel, and act as we cope with life” (pg. 338). Good mental health is then defined as a state of well-being that allows an individual to be productive, have good relationships, cope with difficult circumstances, and adapt to change. I think it is important to have an understanding of the real definition of mental health, my previous understanding of the meaning of mental health was different. From this chapter, I acknowledge the importance of mental health, and how it is at least as important as physical health. Having this basic understanding of mental health helps me to determine how to handle issues that may affect my overall well-being to live a happy and productive life.
Mental health is an integral part of health and well-being of human being, as reflected in the definition of health in the constitution of the World Health Organization (2015), the "Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."
