Arranging work experience at a GP, has proven to be invaluable, as I was able to see interactions between various roles including Doctors, nurses and the receptionists, with patients coming from contrasting backgrounds. This has impressed on me the importance of empathy and how to communicate sensitive issues in an appropriate manner.

I first became interested in healthcare when my granddad was in hospital, and from then gathered that I enjoyed caring for people. I have a passion in the prenatal development. Looking at different jobs in the care industry I decided to look into midwifery, for example I read a midwifery extract in the 'nursing times', as I wanted to help bring new life into the world. I worked alongside health care professionals for four months in a residential care home, which gave me a better understanding of the care environment, and it also taught me the structure of the job.

I volunteered in various health sectors: nurseries, Sunday schools and GP surgery. During my summer holidays, I helped out in my local GP surgery. Under the guidance of a Nurse practitioner, where I observed communications between a patients and a nurse practitioner, based on minor illness and often engaged into the conversation. Additionally, I also had a day where I learnt phlebotomy, where blood sample’s are taking from the vain using vacutainer or finger pricked with a sharp and blood specimen is taking for a minute checking for blood glucose or HIV. This enable me to gain few clinical skills and enables to communicate between patient and family members, which only nourished my hunger and desire to partake in a role that strives to improve healthcare in my local community. In order to improve my understanding of what it means to be a doctor, I organised a placement in a GP, where I saw the compassion and empathy that a doctor has for his patients. My interaction with practice team on daily basis and witnessing the doctor’s work reinforced the importance of good communication and teamwork skills.
