To pursue as an undergraduate student at Indiana University, I aspire to attend the College of Arts & Science to earn my Bachelor's of Science degree in biology and to ultimately become a cardiologist. Furthermore while being an undergraduate student at IU, I want to be part of the Atkins community and the Hutton Honors College. I mostly want to be part of the Atkins community because I will be able to find other black college students who may share the same similar interests and background that I have. I plan to invest so much time there and to help them flourish, as well of giving back to the black community. Also, I am a very hard working student that excel through their rigorous courses in high school; I want to be surrounded by students who share those same traits while being at Indiana University. Likewise, the Hutton Honors College will also keep my hard working skills sharp and secure. I want to be part of such an intelligent school to endeavor the challenges to become a greater, stronger, and vigorous student.

I expect a great deal from my time with Virginia Commonwealth University Honors College. I enjoy that I will have an adviser that truly cares about my wellbeing and education, and I believe this will help me succeed as I pursue my Bachelor’s degree in Biology. I hope to become close with the faculty and staff of the Honors College as I strive towards my ultimate goal of becoming a Reconstructive Plastic Surgeon. Although I plan to commute to and from VCU for classes rather than stay on campus, the Honors College dorms are an extreme luxury provided to those students that are qualified. I also am ecstatic about the special classes and curriculum that is available to Honors students. I am pursuing VCU in an attempt to further my education, and I believe the Honors College is my best opportunity to do so. I look forward to exploring all the Honors College has to offer, and I hope it will help me to become a better student, graduate, and person all around.

As I begin to prepare myself for entering college life, there are a few concepts I plan to keep a focus on in my life so that I may be able to be a positive influence and bright feature on campus.

No one in my immediate family has ever even had the good fortune to apply to a graduate school, but I have always contemplated going to graduate school even before I began my undergraduate career. That is the kind of person I am--always strategizing my next plan of action. More importantly, I have always understood the importance of having a master’s degree. While I have always had my heart set on attending graduate school, I was previously unsure about the specifics of how I would earn my master’s degree. Now I am confident that getting a Master of Health Administration from Johns Hopkins University would help me accomplish much more than simply my career goals.

Despite being a first year student who drowned in fear of the unfamiliar and new college life experience before moving to UCSB, I would like to explore opportunities that allow me to step out of that fear into a realm of individual growth and invaluable experiences. Instead of allowing the fear of stepping into unknown territory deter me from being able to develop life skills and knowledge, I am determined to expose myself to new challenges and even making mistakes. After listening to RA Lisette’s personal growth experience as her time being a DA, I especially began to peak interest in this job because I see my time here at UCSB as an opportunity to not only broaden my academic knowledge, but more importantly, explore and develop my own character. “I got in!!” I screamed running around my house on December 15,2017. I couldn’t believe it. I had got into my dream school and was ready to commit until I finally read the the tiny white words, “Undeclared: Division of General Studies”, underneath the heading “Janiya, You’re an Illini!” The elated feeling I had evaporated just as quickly as it came. Those words told me that although I had became an Illini, I was not admitted into either one of my majors.

Through my interactions with Stanford Graduate School of Business’ (GSB) students and alumni, I recognized how much the school understands the value of individual’s exposure to various industries, new business ideas, and innovative thinking. As an aspiring Healthcare Consultant, who has witnessed the emotional and financial burdens of the healthcare system on my family, I seek to deliver more personalized services and optimize the delivery of care. The experiences gained from working with a variety of healthcare clients and learning industry best practices will prove successful as I position myself to become the Chief Technology Officer at a large hospital system. Armed with a GSB MBA, I will gain an immersive business education, access to thought provoking faculty, and experiential learning that will allow me to explore new ways of thinking to address the challenges of our interdependent world.

While at the American Academy of Religion conference in San Diego California last year, I attended an event for prospective students hosted by the Chicago School of Divinity entitled, “Coffee with the Dean.” There I met Margaret M. Mitchell the then Dean, and John Howell the Coordinator for Recruiting & Admissions, of the Chicago School of Divinity. After expressing my various research interests to Dean Mitchell, she said that my research interests were a perfect match with several professors at the Divinity School: Alireza Doostdar, Michael Sells, and James T. Robinson. After thorough research and visits to numerous religious studies programs, I am confident the Chicago School of Divinity is the best place for me to pursue my academic and professional goals. I am determined to become a stellar candidate for their program by enhancing my graduate school application.

I have always been passionate about math and physics, and in high school, I excelled in both. As I approached university, I was faced with a dilemma: should I pursue engineering or science? It was a single, seemingly trivial incident that led to a moment of clarity and solidified my decision: it started with fiddling with a pen in class. I took it apart, examining the mechanisms and playing around with all the little parts. As I sat there with a deconstructed pen strewed across my desk, something occurred to me: if a person uses a pen to write, he’s made for the arts; if a person throws it in the air and watches gravity pull it back, she’s made for science; and if someone takes a pen apart to see how it works - piecing together the relationship of the spring to the push mechanism, inspecting the efficiency of the inkwell – he’s made for engineering. I realized that I had always loved disassembling objects and, more often than not, putting them back together – fascinated with how things work and what I could do to make them work better. This led me to a degree in engineering, which has become my passion.
