In the most basic meaning of Self-Reliance, it is to become your own individual and autonomous. However, there is some debate on how to achieve that status. Many argued for different sides of the story. In the American Literature line of stories, three stood out to explain self-reliance in different ways. For Mary Rowlandson, her Christian background allowed her to explicate what was different about her journey as she became more comfortable with the Natives. Nearly a century later, Ralph Waldo Emerson publishes his essay on “Self-Reliance”, which strongly emphasized the individual experiences being the most important. Frederick Douglass a few years later had written his autobiography, and there he stressed education and knowledge as the way to sustain a person. These three paths were shaped by the way each of the authors were shaped while they matured through life.

Mary Rowlandson uses her own skills and abilities to make an adequate situation for herself while she was captured in “A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson.” However much of her prose focuses on gaining her will from God not by herself. Prayer to Emerson means a private connection between God and the individual where they reflect on their life and try to use the prayer in all parts of life. It is not a sort of pleading after the fact that the bad action has already happened and “false prayers are our regrets”. (Emerson 282) If one has regret, that means that during the situation they did not adhere to their own will. He believes that churches fear creativity as well. Following all the practices to him means that you are listening to an authoritative voice rather than the voice
