Once she got to the back of the building she picked up Martin and tossed him in the trunk of her car. She put the keys in her car and she was off. The author uses dialogue to show this scene. This leads to the theme because it shows how Martin decided to do something about it when he noticed seeing her. “ ‘Hello, Martin,’ she said, and laughed, and pushed the stop button” (Sleator 31). This quote shows how Martin was right after all. He was aware of his surroundings, even though it didn’t end

I remember falling asleep, but I don’t remember being in a bed. I had fallen asleep in the hall due to my emotional state. My body didn’t need the sleep. My mind did. I’m actually happy I did. It got my mind off all my problems and sorrows for a good while. I sit up, pushing the unfamiliar blankets off my body. I’m in a strange hard bed in a foreign room. Everything around me feels new and alien. This isn’t my dull little prison. This room is slightly decorated with light brown walls and a dresser covered with random things.

His oldest son on the other hand had been wanting to join the army for the past couple years so when the war came to South Carolina he final disobeyed his dad and signed his name on the draft. His dad was mad but just went home and forgot about it. Then one day there was a fight out front of Benjamin's house. Opposite of how he feels about his uncle, Will was introduced as an orphan as his immediate family had died which forced him to have to come live with his aunt which clearly takes a toll on him, “Forget? Will swallowed hard. It was fine for Doc Martin to talk. The war hadn’t ruined his life.’’ (Reeder 2)This reveals Wills feelings on his immediate family as he obviously cares and misses them deeply and he seems to take the sorrow of not having them no longer on his uncle because he is unable to let other "family" into his heart. Similarly on Salvas end his internal thoughts are very consecutive as he us overwhelmed with the thought that

If one man never steps forward to show all the others that change is possible, nothing will ever change. When you look back at history of the American civil rights movement, Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. are still often two of the first names even someone of today’s society may think of. They were, and still are, some of the most influential men to ever live. As young African-American men living during a time of harsh global, but most importantly, national racism and prejudice; teaching effective techniques to achieve peace and equality to others was extremely difficult for Dr. King and Malcolm X.
