After the Vietnam War ended, the Marine Corps’ main focus changed from broad scale operations, to being an Expeditionary Force in Readiness. Although this was no new role for the United States Marine Corps (USMC), there have been many changes in society, technology and tactics that affect how the Corps operates. However, over the last 36 years one thing has remained the same, and that is the role of the Marine Non Commissioned Officer (NCO). The Marine Corps has been protecting America’s freedom and acting as a symbol of strength since 1775. The United States Marine Corps is a force for greatness, bound to the words liberty and justice, sworn to protect every American soul. Marines have battled on land, in air, and at sea for their country and many brave men and women have lost their lives in the line of fire. These brave soldiers are lead by intelligent officers who are strong leaders, quick decision makers, and possess great mental toughness. The young men and women blessed with the privilege of being officers in the Marine Corps face many hardships on their journey to greatness, yet many travel down this road and benefit from the experience greatly.

Specific Purpose: To inform my audience of the five characteristics that enable Marines to overcome fear.

I did not know much about the military, but I knew that the Marine Corps was the most difficult and within it, Reconnaissance was the most demanding. I also knew that the harder the job the more rewarding it would be, my desire to seek the toughest challenges always paid off in the end. With the work ethic my parents instilled in me, I knew I would succeed. In my 24-year Marines Corps career as a Recon Marine, I have had the opportunity to learn, lead, and teach Marines of various caliber and rank. As a senior Staff Non-Commissioned Officer my days of performing at the team level are behind me, but I am always learning. I now rely on the young professionals I work with to teach me the latest technical and tactical procedures; this further allows me to establish confidence with our senior Commanders. My introduction to the highly educated Marine Officers in the Amphibious Reconnaissance profession has been an eye opening experience. By working with them on a daily basis, these extremely smart and academically proficient professional men and women have shown me that I too have what it takes to achieve success at an institution of higher learning. My experiences teaching and mentoring young Marines, my work developing a non-profit organization targeted at providing financial and moral support to veterans during their most critically vulnerable point:

The Marine's take you as an individual, break you down to nothing, and throw you in with others who are at the same level. Thus making your "Tribe" and through out the training cycle Loyalty to your platoon, drill instructors, and Corps are beaten and instilled in you. Discipline which you must show and demonstrate on a daily basis in order to complete and accomplish the mission or task that is given to you. Honor is the binding value that is created whith the practice and application of discipline, and loyalty. Almost identical to the corps values one can see why the Marine Corps is so profeicient at what they do because of their ethos or, more importanlty, their demonstration and commitment to the Warrior Ethos. The Marine Corps are not the only ones who have a strong warrior ethos, there are many others. The Greek states with the Spartans, Macedonians, and the Athenians. Each one, very different to the other, but, their warrior ethos is there just the same. Along with everything there is always an opposite or evil. This is also evident with the warrior ethos. Those whose deeds, tho may be fitting in there eyes as keeping their honor and loyalty to there tribe, but, in reality, they are what can be called the darkside of
