Many people have different opinions on political subjects. The ways a person may feel about these subjects determine what they are in the political world. I personally do not follow politics like other people older than me do, but I do consider myself to be a moderate democrat. Both of my parents are democrats, and they choose to be of this political spectrum because they feel like the Democratic Party represents them. They feel as they stand for policies that will better them as people. With me, I am my own person so I take in the considerations of my parents’ choice, but also make my own decisions. I had my boyfriend who is a 20-year-old junior here at TCU take the Ideology Quiz. He expected, like myself, to be moderately conservative, and interestingly enough he also received the same results as I did on my quiz. He like me and 13% of the population is a “Young Outsider.” He also agreed that the exam was very extreme and as he was taking it he said that he felt that it was making him “sound more liberal than conservative.” We differed in some opinions on government performance, social values & race, and Foreign Policy & Privacy. Even within those categories we only differed on one or two questions. So I would say our political ideology is very similar. I also decided to ask my mom to take the quiz just so see how her results differed from mine. Her results were “Steadfast Conservative,” which didn’t surprise me at all. As we talked about in class, usually kids have very similar ideologies as their parents, although that is not always the case. In Langston Hughes poem “Let America be America Again” he talks about how America should return to the way that it was perceived to be in the dreams before America was truly America. Throughout the poem he uses various methods to evoke the patriotic images and dreams that he feels America should and will eventually be. Hughes states that America is supposed to be a place of equality for everyone including both white and colored people. During this period in time though there was not equality for everyone. Democracy in America, by Alexis de Tocqueville includes Tocqueville’s observations on what American society and culture was like during the 1830’s. Throughout his analysis of America, he draws many outlandish and interesting conclusions regarding what life was like during this time period. For example, in Chapter 18, Tocqueville remarks that citizens in democratic societies are independent, which makes them weak and subsequently uninfluential in society. He goes on to say that in order to combat this, associations must be established to combat individualism and to circulate new thoughts and ideas. All in all, Tocqueville’s claim is certainly valid, but only up to a certain point because there were a select few of individuals that were able to make an influence on society without the help from any associations.

I noticed that while taking this Political Compass test most of my answers were either agree or disagree, very few questions I answered with strongly agree/disagree. For that reason, I believed that my results were more inclined to be on the non-ideological side since my answers were not radical. According to the test, I fall under the Green section that represents the modern liberal and progressive party; however, diagonally I am around three boxes from the center of the graph. In other words, I would be considered non-ideological since I am closer to the middle of the graph rather than on an extreme side of the political compass. Although my results were bit towards the lower left side, I found it accurate to consider myself non-ideological. I am still in the process of learning about economic and social dimensions thus it is too early to label myself especially as a college student.

I took three quizzes, the ‘Political Typology Quiz’, ‘The Political Party Test’ and the ‘I Side with Presidential Quiz’, to determine my own political identity. Each of the quizzes had a myriad of questions that ultimately resulted in a final result displaying my political standpoint. The first two quizzes resulted in a product of ‘Young Outsider’ and ‘Independent’, two identities that are not completely partial to neither of the two major groups, the conservatives nor liberals. Each considered politically neutral. The third quiz; however, stated that I shared various viewpoints with two major Democratic candidates, Hilary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. The newly president elect, Donald Trump, has lead his campaign with a great emphasis on the campaign slogan of “Make America Great Again.” This phrase is used to represent a time much like what Putnam describes of his hometown of Port Clinton, Ohio. In the 1950s, Putnam’s hometown was the “embodiment of the American Dream,” a place in which all classes of people were able to live and grow together. In order to alleviate financial pressure from the lower classes, Trump states "In order to achieve the American dream, let people keep more money in their pockets and increase after-tax wages." Trump’s tax plan will exempt single adults whose income is equivalent $25,000 a year, or married adults who jointly earn less than $50,000 a year from paying income taxes. This plan does show favor to the individuals who reside in this tax bracket,

Based on my responses, this quiz placed me into the next generation left which includes people with liberal values. As a person has different political views towards different things, my views are also scattered between democrats and republicans in different prospects. I stand as a democrat while taking the views related to criminal justice and immigration where they are more liberal. In some cases, like the issue of gun control, I am in support of republicans as they strongly oppose the use of guns and hand arms to control the crime.

Today in America, income and wealth inequality has continued to grow at an unsettling pace. The rich continue to get richer, while the number of people categorized as lower class grows exponentially. As Joseph Stiglitz has explained, many theories that are seen as strongly Republican, such as the trickle-down effect, has caused the rich to take money from the poor, and as a result the lower class grows and the middle class disintegrates. The top 1 percent of America’s households currently holds 30 percent of America’s economy, which is much more than other first-world countries and helps to emphasize the extremity of inequality currently in America today. This increased inequality has in turn caused America to become a much more divided society; those born in poverty typically stay in poverty, with little to no chance of self-improvement due to a lack of education provided in their areas. In contrast, those that are born wealthy typically go to better schools, have better health care, and are all but spoon fed information on how to remain wealthy. These two sides of society almost never cross, and this causes the country to be more divided than ever. In order to limit this inequality, drastic changes must be made, such as large corporations paying their fair share of taxes and giving back to the lower class, and minimum wage should be raised. If everyone in America works together, we can raise social mobility and re-unite what has become an increasingly divided country.

The results on the quiz in terms of party alignment was the Democratic Party. The quiz showed I was in agreement with the Democratic Party more than the other parties with a match of 87%. I also had high percentages in the Green Party, Libertarians, and the Constitution Party. The reason I have high percentages for the other parties as well is because they all have different views on all the different issues and how they approach the problems, so I agree with some of the issues they are for or against or even what they are doing to be for or against them. Simon says, “Make America Great Again” Simon says “Don’t let THEM in” Simon says “Block the borders”. If Simon says to discriminate against a certain group, what is that called? Marginalization. Welcome to America, land of the Marginalized and Home of discrimination. The name of the game is to listen to everything that Simon says. Simon directs the audience to jump, the audience asks how high. At what point does the audience stop asking how high or how far to go. Simon has asked America to discriminate against people based on race, gender and religion, the question is does America listen or disobey.

Another difference in the poems is who the authors are describing. “The New Colossus” concentrated more on the immigrants going to America while “Let America Be America Again” gave more consideration to the general population living in America. Lazarus’ poem reached out to the people that wanted a fresh start to their lives. Using the Statue of Liberty as her voice in the poem, she says, “Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” She is explaining how she wants all people, rich, poor, black, white, to come to America for a new beginning to their lives. Written in the first half of the 20th century, “Let America Be America” is a poem that documents and responds to the oppressed state of the United States, in both the past and present. The poem is a plea for a return to the original principles of freedom that our country has seemingly forgotten. Additionally, the speaker sees America as the broken home to oppressed people who have lost sight of the ultimate goal of freedom and happiness. Although America is often perceived as the “land of the free,” Langston Hughes’s poem contradicts this ideology by not only painting a vivid picture of oppression in America but also by providing a desperate hope for the future.

     Upon taking the “Worlds smallest Political quiz” online, the website told me that I was a Centrist. A Centrist is a person who favors selective political involvement and practical solutions to modern problems. A Centrist tends to keep an open mind on new issues and prefers capitalism to work out economic problems if at all possible. Although I was a centrist I was on the boarder line of being a right wing conservative who would like to see a capitalistic society and little government intervention. The next quiz was an ideology quiz. This quiz told me that I also tended towards the conservative side. I apparently also would like to see order in society instead of equality. These two tests showed similar results in that both said I was more closely related to a conservative than a liberal. The “Worlds smallest Political Quiz” showed the national results and percentages of those who have previously taken the test. The majority of people who take the quiz, 37.7% are liberals. The second most popular grouping is Centrist at 29 %. The ideology quiz stated that the average of all those who take this quiz are liberal as well.

The era of volatility has created a shift from America being the middle-class society to simply rich or poor (Sachs, 2011). A gap this large has not been experienced since the 1920’s (Sachs). “The top 1% of households takes almost a quarter of all household income” but an economy this top heavy will not be able to succeed (Sachs, 2011, p. 30). The working classes are struggling with housing, wage, and employment issues. Rich individuals are ignoring these troubles, shipping their business operations out of the country, thus furthering the downward spiral of the economy (Sachs). To make matters worse, this has become in a large part a political issue, because the rich can influence candidates with funding, where the poor and working
