Loyalty In Odyssey

The theme of loyalty repeats many times throughout the Odyssey. But no other character shows the same great deal of loyalty as the wife of Odysseus, Penelope. Penelope demonstrates her loyalty to her husband by remaining faithful to him in 30 years of his absence. Even as suitors court her in marriage. Penelope would not choose to marry a suitor until she was certain Odysseus had died.

Odysseus, King of Ithaca, and the main character in homer’s The Odyssey, was gone for twenty years before finally returning to his family and his homeland. He struggled through many hardships and lost many loyal companions. The King of Ithaca would not have made it home without the assistance of the Greek gods. Despite all of the help and advice that Odysseus receives from the gods, he is a very brave man because his courage and daring in the cave of the Cyclops, his inability to give up and abandon his men on Circe’s island, and his flawless following of the gods instructions are acts of bravery that is uncommon in most men.

According to Homer in these books, loyalty is the commitment made from a person to the other and yearning desire of their return and victory. He illustrates it by Odysseus being loyal to his men,his men being loyal to him, and Odysseus being loyal to his wife Penelope and Ithaca. Odysseus wife Penelope and his son Telemachus show a lot of loyalty to Odysseus as well as many other characters even the gods in this poem.If it wasn’t for the loyalty of his men during the journey home, Odysseus journey would be near impossible.It was loyalty of his men,wife and son that gave Odysseus motivation and kept him insistent on his journey home.

Even though the island Odysseus is on is filled with wonder, he is loyal to his family. Next loyalty is shown through Odysseus when he rushes to save his men from Circe’s influence. Even though he could have listened to Eurylochus who tells him they should leave. Loyalty is then shown when Odysseus risks putting himself through more danger, by going back to Circe’s island to bury his fallen team member, Elpenor. Another example of loyalty is exposed through Odysseus’ dog, Argos, when Odysseus comes home from his long journey and sees his beloved dog uncared for and weak. Argos shows love for Odysseus and dies soon after he sees his master. IAs though Argos was waiting for Odysseus’ return. Lastly loyalty is displayed as Penelope is grieving her husband, even after twenty years.

Very rare are there people who are truly loyal. The definition of loyalty is to strongly support. In Homer’s epic poem, “The Odyssey,” there are two people that are consistently loyal to Odysseus through the whole story. Odysseus has been away from Ithaca for twenty years. He has been trying to get home from the Trojan War.
