American literature has evolved greatly from the Native Americans to 1870’s. American literature has changed, it teaches us how we have become more independent ourselves. The World on a Turtle’s Back, a myth, The Scarlet Letter, a book in a puritan setting, and A Rose for Emily is a southern gothic story. American literature would not be the same today without these forms of writing. The teachings from these are passed down generation to generation.

American History, it has done so much in time that has affected how we live life today and how we interpret things. American Literature reflects that and all it has left us with. Throughout the stories and passages we’ve read this course all of them have left a impact on how and why the writers wrote about what they did. It was all because of American History which later went on and fathered American Literature. American Literature has made society how it is today and painted a vivid picture of how American’s and people live and many of these writers had that in mind when they took these notes.

When I think of America, I think of freedom. We live in a country where we can do what we choose. We can express our opinions and live our own lives. Individuals can form their own individual beliefs and they can do what they want and pursue what they wish. They can play basketball, go to school, get a job, have a family, buy a house, or go to church. We are free. We have opportunity to be whatever we want to make ourselves. When you ask, what is an American? I find it no different to ask, what is freedom? America and freedom are intertwined and this relationship is evident in American literature.

Since the very beginning of the Antebellum, American literature was being touched by the early forms of structure in books and authors. Before the Antebellum period, literature was not original; it was either imported from Europe or inspired by other writings. But America started to create a new type of literature, this type of writings was basically just biographies, autobiographies and history books of the American Revolution heroes. Class, you may know William Shakespeare for his stage play called “Romeo and Juliet” and Richard II, Henry VI (parts 1, 2 and 3) and Henry V dramatic plays. As a student I often find myself showing little interest in early American Literature vs modern United States. The text can be boring mostly because it is primarily authored by Anglo-Saxton Puritans. Once the text was read, it started to make more sense to me about the way of puritan life; as well as being more relevant on the views of America. The Puritan way of life was a man’s world. Women had separate roles in Puritan society; women served as secondary subjects their husbands. The roles were limited only to mothering and controlling household functions. Women were only able to read scriptures from the bible not publicly allowed to interpret them; although Anne Bradstreet and Mary Rowlandson did so anyway through their text and poems. On a good note there were two legal rights of Puritan women.

From the cave paintings of the Native Americans, to the novels documenting the events of World War II, time periods have greatly influenced the literature produced. The writings of the Puritans focused on God and their faith and the writings of the revolutionaries focused on achieving freedom from Great Britain. As history continued, the writings of each time period remained relevant and inspired by that time period. In the 1920s, women were becoming liberated.

We can decide how “American” a piece of writing is by seeing if it is written about America or makes reference to America. Also, was it written by an American? America contains people of so many different backgrounds, cultures, etc. America’s values and morals have changed over the years. If you read American literature, you can see how much it has changed. You can also learn about the history of America. The language has changed from formal and now is more modern. The form has changed over the years. Some of the writings like the poems were very deep that it can be difficult for somebody in this age to decipher the poem. They are very deep and had meaning, but the meaning may not be even close to what we think without doing some research

American literature at first was perceptibly a colonial writing by authors who were Englishmen. American writing began with the work of the English adventures and the colonists in the new world principally for the interest of readers in the mother country. The World War II which involved a vast majority of the world’s nations began in 1939 and lasted in 1949 (Meredith, pg. 67). This conflict led to a severe worldwide economic depression also referred to as The Great Depression in the decade preceding World War II. Speaking of Hemingway, despite being an exceptionally successful novelist he was a very depressed man and often turned to alcohol to dwindle his feelings of depression. In collaboration with alcohol, the novelist, who established his literary dominance during the 1920’s, wrote amazing pieces of american literature. Hemingway was joined with many American icons including: F. Scott Fitzgerald, Charles Lindbergh, Al Capone, Babe Ruth, Albert Einstein, Langston Hughes, and many more famous men and women. With the amount of huge influences listed, the 1920s were undoubtedly a huge contributor in shaping American culture.

Throughout history, there has been a connection among literary works from different periods. The connection is that History, current events, and social events have influenced American Literature. Authors have long used experiences they have lived through and/or taken out of history to help shape and express in their works. Early American literature does a tremendous job of revealing the exact conditions and challenges that were faced by the explorers and later by the colonists of the New World. From early shipwrecks to the later years of small colonies barely surviving through dreadful winters, the literary works of the time period focus on some very recognizable themes. The theme of any given work – being simply the unifying subject or idea – is a very important element of any piece of writing. John Smith and John Winthrop are two examples of the types of writing at this period: the former kept a romantic journal of his adventures in the New World; the latter kept a journal (or history) of life in New England, where religious matters were of utmost importance.
