Outline Structure for Literary Analysis Essay Throughout the story, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, Junior goes through many ups and downs. This story is about how Junior, an indian from the Spokane reservation, decides to go to Rearden, the school for non-indians because of how run-down his school is and has trouble fitting in. Some of the ways Junior dealt with those downs include his uncanny sense of humor, his love for his friends, and the want to fit in and prove he’s just as good as everyone else at his new school. "His father is drinking hard and throwing hard punches, so Rowdy and his mother are always walking around with bruised and bloody faces. 'It's war paint,' Rowdy always says. 'It just makes me look tougher.” (17) Junior easily loves Rowdy the most out of all of his friends. Even after all of the times that he was mean to Junior and when he has his outburst, Junior knows that Rowdy needs friends and that it’s all just temporary. Junior also knows Rowdy’s secrets and has never given them away. This is the sign of a true friendship. Rowdy also has never given away any of Junior’s secrets which shows that even though he’s been mean, he still wants to be friends. Junior also loves his other friends because of how much they support him too, especially Penelope and Gordy. The third most important way that Junior made it through his year at Wellpinit was because of his need and want to fit in and prove he’s just as good as everyone else. Anyone who’s switched schools at any point in their life knows the feeling of having no friends and being uncomfortable all the time. "'Okay Arnold,' Dodge said. 'Where did you learn this fact? On the reservation? Yes, we all know there is so much amazing science on the reservation.'"(85) After Mr. Dodge says this, Junior’s reaction shows how much he cares about his hometown and how much he wishes people would treat him fairly.
