An author writes to convey a message to their readers. Genres help convey that message and help authors manipulate the way a reader perceives the text they are reading. Journals for example, like “From Of Plymouth plantation” show the reader what the thoughts of the author were at the time of the writing; letters are written with a sense of urgency and a desire for something. The letter written to King Ferdinand and Queen Elizabeth by Christopher Columbus shows the reader how desperate Christopher Columbus is to be freed. Authors who use poems to convey their message are allowed a greater quantity of freedom over the aforementioned types of texts. The use of repetition allows a poet to control the pace at which the reader proceeds in the poem; whether that is slow and utilizes a lot of repetition to convey a sense of intrigue or faster with no repetition so the reader gets more and more excited and their attention is grasped. Poets also use rhyme scheme to increase the pace or rhythm of the poem.
In a journal the author has the chance to show his true character through his thoughts. Using his thoughts in the text allows him to predetermine the reader 's opinion before the reader has a chance to formulate an opinion of their own. The journal “From Of Plymouth Plantation” is a great example for an author 's ability to impose their opinion on the reader in the line “But here I cannot but stay … stand half amazed at this poor people’s condition; and so I think will the
How can authors use poetry to give a message? Poetry is one genre of writing that is often used to give a message as it is, and both of the poems we looked at use several methods to do so. However, they don’t use all of the same methods in the exact same ways. The two poems “Girls Can We Educate We Dads?” and “In Trying Times,” are similar in the theme of freedom that they share, but different in both the setting and the use of dialect.
The poem, “Postcards to Columbus,” by Sherman Alexie has a different meaning through close analysis. When I read the poem, the message I got from it changed significantly from the first and later readings. I believe my classmates would misinterpret the part of the text referring to Columbus as a real estate agent. In the poem, Alexie writes, “Christopher Columbus, you are the most successful real estate agent who ever lived, sold acres and acres of myth, a house built on stilts” (Alexie 291). I believe the word successful has a positive connotation- especially when used while talking about professions- giving the reader, my classmates, the false impression that Columbus is being praised in this portion of the poem. I feel that the tone is unclear
Columbus and de la Casas make two very different observations of the new world. Columbus made many detailed descriptions in his letter to the King Ferdinand, who had financed his journey with the intentions of completing three very clear goals. The first, “to procure riches for the Spanish empire,” the second, “to find a new route to the East Indies,” and lastly, “to convert native peoples to Christianity (Casper et al., 4).” de la Casas had a much different intention than Columbus for why he journeyed to the new world. He traveled as a son of a poor merchant and observed all of the wrong doings that were happening to the native people. He later returned to Spain for the remainder of his life to write about all of the awful things that
The English had two main colonies in the new world, Jamestown and Plymouth. The first colony was Jamestown, established in Virginia in 1607. Jamestown was settled by Captain John Smith, and was named after King James I. Tobacco was the main export of Jamestown, and became the basis of the Jamestown economy, sending more than 50,000 lbs of the plan back to Europe by 1618 (textbook 46). Jamestown had a very rocky start, many colonists dying in the first few years of the settlement, and the settlers had many problems with natives. Shortly after the arrival of English colonists the Natives attacked them, and were finally forced back by a canon from the English. A very uneasy truce was finally settled between the natives, called the Powhatans,

It is thought by many that Christopher Columbus was a skilled sailor on a mission of greed. Many think that he in fact did it all for the money, honor and the status that comes with an explorer, but this is not the case entirely. Columbus was an adventurer and was enthused by the thrill of the quest of the unknown. “Columbus had a firm religious faith and a scientific curiosity, a zest for life, the felling for beauty and the striving for novelty that we associate with the advancement of learning”. He had heard of the legendary Atlantic voyages and sailors reports of land to the west of Madeira and the Azores. He believed that Japan was about 4,800 km to the west of Portugal. In 1484, Columbus wanted support for an exploratory
Christopher Columbus set out on his voyage in 1942 on the West Indian islands, to find a new world for the Europeans. When he landed on the Caribbean Island the Indian Natives that lived there were at first scared but greeted him in a friendly manner. For the Europeans to colonize and move in on Native land they had to find a way to interact with the Indians. On the thirty-third day after I withdrew from Cadiz, I went to the Indian ocean, where I discovered numerous islands occupied by men without number, of all which I took ownership for our luckiest ruler, with broadcasting envoys and flying benchmarks, nobody questioning.
