Should abortion be allowed in the United States? If so, then under what circumstances? Abortion has been one of the most heatedly debated topics in the U.S. for more than a century. This paper explores the history and international use of abortion, as well as the empirical and moral claims made by both sides of the issue. We will also examine the key positions taken on abortion and look at those affected by it. Based on extensive research and analysis, this paper will recommend that the government increase abortion funding and availability.

Even though, abortion has been legal in every state in the United States since the monumental Supreme Court decision, “Roe v Wade”, on January 22, 1973, there are fewer physicians willing to perform abortions today than in 2008 (Kraft, 09). Abortion has been performed for thousands of years and in many societies around the world. Abortion was legal in the United States, then in the mid to late 1800’s states began to outlaw the practice due to lack of basic antiseptics and the primitive medical education held by doctors. There are two types of abortion; vacuum aspiration and dilatation and evacuation. Vacuum aspiration removes the pregnancy by gentle suction. This procedure can be done when the fetus is up to 15 weeks. Then, dilatation and evacuation uses narrow forceps passed through the neck of the womb and gentle suction. Both of these procedures can be done in a short amount of time and you will be able to go home the same day.

There are many different procedures for abortion including Mifepristone and Misoprostol which are pills used to destroy the fetus as if the woman had miscarried. Other methods include manual Vacuum Aspiration (MVA) and Aspiration. These abortion methods are surgical procedures which use a vacuum to remove the living fetus from its mother (American Pregnancy Association). Certain abortion methods are banned in the United States, such as Dilation and Extraction. This form of abortion is not legal because it is termination of a late term pregnancy. Abortion is a topic that, throughout American history, has encountered much turbulence in terms of the empirical and moral. There have been both extreme and moderate views supporting the creation or removal of legal restrictions throughout every state in America. There are a few ways that the issue of abortion can be categorized, all relating to how women gained the right to abortion. Legal precedence, human rights, when specifically life begins, religion, and birth control issues all are categorically the primary issues about abortion. There are various types of abortion procedures the most common being the vacuum procedure which is when they extract the baby through the cervix this is also known as an induced abortion. There are few issues that can cause as many heated and sometimes, irrational, debates than that of abortion. The issue strikes at the very heart of an individual's religious and philosophical beliefs. Does a woman have the right to terminate a pregnancy? Is it moral to do so in any circumstance? Is a fetus a living human being? The debate has raged for nearly thirty years and there does not seem to be any end to the controversy that often results in violence. My question is, how is it ever acceptable to kill someone who didn’t get the chance to live the life and take the advantages that they could’ve had?
