Introduction
Over the past few years, the global business operating environment has increasingly become challenging. First it was the global financial crisis followed almost immediately by the Europe crisis-which is currently threatening to become a global economic crisis-that presented these challenges. It was argued that economies, such as Jordan which are relatively smaller players in the Global arena would not suffer the adverse effect of the crisis. In fact Jordan and Lebanon were the main Middle East countries expected not to suffer from the adverse effect of the crisis. To facilitate the process of achieving this goal, JKB has strategic partnered in different capacity with various organizations. A good example is the selling of its 4.8 million shares, an approximate 4.8% of its market capitalization, to Odyssey Reinsurance Company, a strategic foreign investor. The investor possesses financial capabilities and competence needed to push the bank forward. Similarly, its partnership with Microsoft Jordan was also another strategic move worth noting. The partnership guarantees the bank continuance support and consultation on key technologies that are effective in supporting the bank’s activities. Adopting, integrating and aligning technology with the business strategy of an organization has been regarded as an essential source of organization’s competitive advantage. The role of technology in IT has particularly been emphasized (JKB 2011; Zawya 2011; Betz 2001).
Situational Analysis To establish whether JKB is competitively positioned to tackle the evolving and increasing challenging business environment hence recommend the way forward, a situation analysis must be conducted. This analysis aids in collecting essential information about the organization internal and external factors. Keen interest should be placed on these factors since they have the capability of adversely affecting an organization; they can create or on the other diminish, or altogether destroy the chances of an organization attaining competitive advantage.
Situation Analysis: This analysis helps the organization to know the environment in which it operates. It also helps the company to understand its customers, competitors and stakeholders at the same time knowing the gap between what customers want and what is being currently offered.
This research paper will compare and contrast two organizations in the same industry. There will be analysis on the two organizations’ elements of business. Furthermore, the wider socioeconomic or macro environment considers aspects such as government, legal aspects, technological factors and other factors that could affect the company and industry. As a result of assessing the external environment, the opportunities and threats of a company can be defined. Opportunities allow a company to take advantage of their strengths, minimize weaknesses, and neutralize environmental threats. Finally, the threats may hinder a company to gain competitive advantage or satisfy their stakeholders. Thus, there should be elaborated on strengths in order to minimize the company’s threats.
The situational analysis attempts to address the question ‘where is the organization now?’ The situational analysis contains a vast amount of information and, as the term indicates, is an analysis of the situation that you are facing with the proposed product or service (Hollensen, S. (2003) Marketing Management: a relationship approach, p.652). Alexander Berger -Marketing Strategy-1-
Analyze the external and internal environment for opportunities, threats, strengths, and weaknesses that impact the firm’s competitiveness.
Conditions have changed. Global trade has rapidly increased in both volume and value, reaching nowadays more than $4 trillion in 1997 (Daniels J.D., Radebaugh, 1998, pg. 529). Competition is fierce from all corners of the world. Failure at the global level can backfire and may consume existing brands and business relationships. At the same time, global opportunities have emerged that offer possibilities for growth, profit, and an improvement in worldwide standards of living.
Every organization has to analyze its business environment before making policies and strategies for its day to day operations, marketing and promotional efforts, and competing with the industry rivals (Loudon, Stevens, & Wrenn 2004). The key factors of the business environment that affect the business operations of a company include political, economic, technological, environmental, cultural, and demographical factors. In addition to these factors, an analysis of the competitive forces is also essential in order to assess the potential threats and intensity of rivalry present in the industry (Ritchie & Crouch 2003). If an organization does not give importance to the analysis of its business environment, it may not be able to compete in the industry for a long period of time (Hill & Jones 2007).
The business environment of an organization reveals much about its competitiveness and the possible influences on the success of its strategies. The focus of this paper will be an environmental scan of the internal and external environments of two real-world firms, their competitive advantages and company strategies for creating value and sustaining competitiveness, measurement guidelines for verifying strategic effectiveness and their evaluation.

A business organization cannot survive in its industry if it does not keep an eye on what is happening in its internal and external business environment. The analysis of business sector or environment acquaints an organization with the issues, challenges, and external factors that have a direct or indirect impact on its business operations and profitability. On the basis of this analysis, the organization can formulate its future strategies and compete in the industry in a more effective and vigilant manner (Cadle, Paul & Turner 2010).
In this question we saw how to use industry and competitive analysis to assess the attractiveness of a company 's external environment. In this chapter, we discuss how to evaluate a particular company 's strategic situation in that environment. Company situation analysis centres on five questions:
In order to grow the business, I decided to complete a STEEP and SWOT analysis evaluating Bremont’s HRM, accounting and finance, and marketing functions.
