Rose Fitzgerald and John P. Kennedy met as teenagers while their families vacationed together at Old Orchard Beach. By October 14th, 1914, the two were happily married and ready to move into their first home as newlyweds. They first lived in a building on Beals street that stood three stories tall with a grey finish.Within the next eighteen years, the couple would have their nine children and Rose would inherit the well deserved name as a ‘model parent’ by friends and neighbors. John P. Kennedy began his life in their first home with a salary of around $10,000 but left the Brookline residence as a millionaire. Kennedy’s Grandfather, Francis Fitzgerald, began his political career as a city councilman, progressed to a congressman, and was elected as mayor in 1906. He served the position as mayor until 1913 when Francis’ life as a politician came to a halt after a sex scandal threat came into play. Kennedy’s older brother Joe, joined the US Navy at the same time that John did so. Joe was unfortunately killed in combat and never returned home. John was attempting to reach out to the elderly voters by stressing the need for adequate health insurance accessibility. Kennedy pushed the idea that many schools needed an increase in federal funding to soften the blow of the previous baby boom. Kennedy fought the claim that his executive order to desegregate federally funded housing would help end a piece of discrimination.
