Jasper Jones Character Analysis

The novel ‘Jasper Jones’ written by Craig Silvey is set in the small town of Corrigan, Western Australia during the Vietnam war (1960’s). One night Jasper Jones the towns scapegoat went to Charlie Bucktin an innocent boy asking for help. Jasper takes Charlie to his secret glade in the bush where Charlie sees Laura wishart’s body hanging from a tree. Jasper wants Charlie to help move the body and find out who killed Laura before he is blamed. Jasper is often blamed for everything in the town because he is a ‘Half-caste’ and has not been raised well so parents make sure their kids do not hang around him.

To hide our guilt and put the blame on others has always been in human nature, To Kill A Mockingbird, demonstrates this throughout the book giving life to the famous quote, “to kill a mockingbird is a sin”. In the book, To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, has character Tom Robinson, a black man in a racist town, Maycomb, Alabama a victim of racism and being taken advantaged upon for his skin colour. Boo Radley, an antisocial, kind-hearted man being a symbol of good-hearted nature is also victim to mockery for the way he lives his life. Finally there is Dolphus Raymond, a man who has chosen to act as a drunk for a reason why he should love his black wife. All these characters have one thing in common, they all have have stayed out of the town's business and have done nothing but gone about there in peace. Though they live in peace by themselves, they are mocked, oppressed, and deemed unlivable with because of what they look like or how they live.

In the book “To Kill A Mockingbird” written by Harper Lee is based in a small town in Maycomb county in the year 1933 during the great depression.Which is also at a time where racial tensions are high.From the title”To Kill A Mockingbird “ we have gathered that the mockingbird symbolizes innocence, peace and how it is a sin to kill a Mockingbird.

Due to the nature of the implied author within this book of this book, the main protagonist D.J.J is able to convey a feeling of innocence and childhood, while Digger is an unreliable narrator as he may leave out key facts or events due not only to his age but also due to the fact that he had a level of ignorance regarding the events and struggles of the time period. The simplistic nature of the grammar and linguistics creates the feeling of reading a text written by a younger person, this is emphasized through the use of focalisation within the text, on page 7 (Frankland Rickard, 2007) when Digger writes “I wanna” it conveys to the level of education and the maturity of the character. Due to Diggers young age during the text, he is unable to completely understand the issues facing the aboriginal citizens of Australia; however this is not to say that he did not experience the racial profiling and discrimination. Most slaves in the novel are mainly influenced by Mrs. Shelby who is a Christian and always tells slaves about things like the importance of soul and spirit which she sees are the most valuable things in the world. She always tells her servants to believe in god and let them believe that God will find out how to help them out when they are facing the despair.
