In many countries national prisons are operated and supplemented by provinces and state counterparts. Prisoners are held in prisons and jails throughout the country and globally convicted of various crimes and offenses. The nature of the offense determines where the prisoner is held and the lengths of times. There are institutions that vary in level of security in both the state and federal prison system. However, the majority of prisoners are sentenced and housed in state facilities in high security facilities.

In prisons today, rehabilitation, deterrence, incapacitation, and retribution are all elements that provide a justice to society. Prisons effectively do their part in seeing that one if not more of these elements are met and successfully done. If it were not for these elements, than what would a prison be good for? It is highly debated upon whether or not these elements are done properly. It is a fact that these are and a fact that throughout the remainder of time these will be a successful part of prison life.

While reading about jails, I learned the two main types of local facilities which are lockups and state operated jails. Lockups is station in the police department and intended for very short term holding. And stated operated jails which are combined by jails and prisons. Jails held people who commit minor violations like misdemeanors and felony. Prisons and jails have changed over time, from the restrictions to housing. The difference between jails and prisons is that jails are run by county or town, and they are only used to temporarily detain people who are suspected of people who have convicted a crime. Basically jail is used for a short period of time, jails hold those who are waiting on a trial or those who have convicted of low level offenses and have sentence for a year or less. Jails function work release programs and boot camps. Something interesting is that jails address issues; For example, educational needs, substance abuse needs, and vocational needs. On the other hand, prisons is the facility that holds convicts who have committed crimes. After being declare guilty by the judge, defendants who have long term sentence are usually the ones who go to prison. For example, drunk driving or first degree murder. Smaller prisons with fewer internal controls and a larger ration to guards and inmates dictate these facilities. Finally, you have what is commonly known as trustees, or open-security facilities. In the Criminal Justice system, there are many arguments for areas of improvement, but the focus of this paper is on the revitalization of prisoners and the way our system can assist. Numerous studies have shown that criminals tend to come out of prison worse than how they were when they came in, they may get involved in illegal activities or gangs inside the prison and they will likely be back in jail within the next three years as statistics show in Langan and Levin’s (2002) article on criminal relapse stated. The goal of this paper is to inform the reader of the benefits of helping to incorporate programs into prisons and create jobs inside and outside of prisons for released and current convicts. In the United States, Imprisonment is one of the main forms of punishment for offenders who commit a felony offense. The United States has the highest number of offenders incarcerated in prion than any other country in the world. Both the federal and state prisons both have the same mission and that is to protect society by confining offenders in a controlled environment that are safe human, secure, cost efficient, and provide rehabilitation to offenders in self-improvement and educational opportunities and helping them become better law-abiding citizens. Prisons are operated at the Federal and State level and are operated at various different levels of security based on the offender’s crimes which can range from minimum security prisons to supermax facilities (De Maille, 2015)

There are three main purposes of the prisons, these are punishing the offenders, protection of the population from the offenders and rehabilitating the offenders. Punishment is seen as the most obvious intention of the correctional system for the people who have been found guilty of crimes. Theoretically speaking, this is supposed to act as a way of deterring one from repeating a particular criminal activity and it is also intended to serve as an example to other people as to why they should avoid any form of criminal activity. Incarceration is an example of punishment in the correctional systems, on the other hand death penalty and other lesser penalties like probation are meant to be punitive.

To begin, when discussing the development of prisons and the characteristics of prisoners there are many thing to consider. Prisons are relatively modern social institutions, and their development is distinctly American. The Pennsylvania system and the Auburn system of prison discipline set the foundation or prison development covering many areas.

During the mid 1900s, many changes came about for the system of corrections in America. Once a new idea goes sour, a new one replaces it.
