S5 Higher English - Discursive Essay Is Technology Ruining Society in the Process of Advancing It? (P1 - Introduction) In the 1960s ‘TV Takeover’ was prominent. With televisions becoming ever popular, technology advanced even more into the upper class division. 20 years later, the technical cycle rolled on with the introduction of the internet (But not quite as we know it). a further 25 years down the line, what was in a large, heavy and clunky plastic case is now in the palm of your hand made from elegantly carved aluminium into a sleek smartphone. These phones required large unappealing signal antennas to function. These large, bulky and unattractive phones were later replaced with ‘Flip-Phones’ and then ‘Smart’ era began. On the 29th June 2007 the original Apple iPhone was released, this sparked a demand for thinner, bigger and more capable phones. Touchscreen smart-phones seemed to be a hit, so once again Apple made an industry taking the ‘Personal Digital Assistant’ or ‘PDA’ for short, which was deemed a failure and based their new creation the ‘iPad’ around the same target market. The ‘iPad’ was an instant hit selling over 3 million units in just 80 days. The ‘iPad’ created another market for Tablet Computers which took off majorly outselling Laptops and PCs after just a few years of trading. In my opinion Tablets took off at a time of PC vulnerability, Windows had just released a major failure in Windows Vista (their latest operating system release at the time) leaving many users uncertain of the next stage. (P3) With technology progressing at such high speed, something the size of a wrist watch can have the capabilities of a laptop from 2010. It has the least on screen customisation options out of any apple product and is the most limited app wise. Another diminishing factor is the costs and waiting times. The cheapest watch starts at £299 and the most expensive at a ridiculous £13,500, with between 4-10 weeks waiting time. (P4) Like most industries in the world the technology industry often has ups and downs. Despite technology being one of the main reasons we know life as it is, it still has major drawbacks. Addiction is the main impediment, In the majority of countries in the world it is deemed illegal to use a mobile phone whilst driving. As much as this is illegal and heavily frowned upon, it still occurs and evidently quite often. According to the National Safety Council, “cell phone use while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes each year” with “1 out of every 4 car accidents in the United States caused by texting while driving”. Another major flaw with technology is digital piracy. Digital piracy or Copyright Infringement is “The use of works protected by copyright law without permission… such as the right to reproduce, distribute, display or perform the protected work or to make derivative works.” With
