The article “Introversion: The Often Forgotten Factor Impacting the Gifted” by Jill D. Burruss and Lisa Kaenzig begins by giving examples of how an introvert may behave. The authors continue by explaining that introversion is in not an issue, but a personality type which differs from that of the “normal,” more outgoing and friendly personality type, extroversion. Introverts and extroverts are different personality types, most people fall into one of the two categories. Typically, an introvert’s main focus is in the internal world of thoughts, while an extrovert's main focus is on the external world of people and events. Introverts tend to enjoy alone time, working on their own, and are usually quiet, and extroverts are typically social, enjoy
Introversion are traits where a person is more mindful of their own thoughts and feelings rather than their surrounding environment. Have you ever met someone that seemed to be more reserved than others? Someone who tends to keep their emotions private? Someone who is more of a social
Leslie A. Gordon describes an introvert as a person who is unwilling to speak out thoughts or feelings freely. She further says," introverts gain energy from quiet reflection and solitude. They tend to think before they speak, take a deliberate approach to risk and prefer listening. While not necessarily shy or anxious in social settings, they're usually not comfortable in groups. Introverts are energized by focusing deeply on a subject or activity that truly interests them and may become overwhelmed in stimulating environments”(Gordon). She means that introverts can be described as shy and spend most of their time alone. They don’t like being around people, especially large crowds. They are mistakenly judged as individuals
Through studying texts one can gain a greater understanding of how individuals can transition into more prosperous and positive phases of life as well into new and differing social contexts. This is explored in the texts The Simple Gift composed by Steven Herrick, as Billy transitions into a new life in the town of Bendarat and in Jasper Jones as Charlie develops new outlooks in his life and moves into social contexts he would have once perceived as taboo. Through the portrayal of transitions in these texts, the responder gains a wider perception how circumstances can create transitions into new phases of life and gain a greater understanding of contrasting social contexts.
Extroverts in today’s society are idolized, and people associate different positive characteristics such as attractiveness and intelligence with extroverts. That misconception has caused many introverts to try and become more extroverted in order to fit in with society. However, the book Quiet by Susan Crain informs that introverts posses many strong traits like leadership or intelligence and therefore can be viewed just as highly as extroverts.
People high in extroversion tend to seek out opportunities for social interaction, where they are often the “life of the party.” They are comfortable with others, gregarious, and prone to action rather than contemplation. People low in extroversion are more likely to be people “of few words,” people who are quiet, introspective, reserved, and thoughtful. The long-term study found that extroversion was fairly stable across the years, indicating that extroverts and introverts do not easily shift into the opposite
The introverted attitude reflects a focus on an inner, private world. The extroverted attitude reflects a focus on the external world of things, events, and people. Thinking and feeling are opposing, rational functions; sensing and intuiting are opposing, non-rational functions.
On April 4, I watched the TED Talk of Susan Cain, a writer. She claimed that introverts are not shy or antisocial. Specifically she claimed that introverts are not inferior to anyone just because they want to work alone. As she said, “Introverts feel at their most alive ….. and their most capable when they’re in quieter, more low-key environment.” Although some people believe that introverts like to work individually because they are shy, Cain insisted that they do that because that's how they bring out their full potential and be more creative. She stated that it's everyone's loss when introverts are told that what they are doing should not be done in this society to support that introverts have their own way of doing things which makes them
Many would consider introverts as shy, or powerless. If one was to research the definition of an introvert google will provide you with this, “a shy, reticent person.” This stereotype of an introvert, can be so disconcerting. Those who are introverts, may realize that at times this definition may be true, but that does not define introverts as a whole. They may often hide or guard their ideas or feelings, and keep their baggage to themselves. However, in Susan Cain’s Ted Talk “The power of Introverts,” she demonstrates and provides very important aspects that challenges and exploits the need for introverts, and their power in society. She also provides key research that can be unsuspecting, and thought provoking.
I found this to be very interesting that it is possible to be both an introvert and extravert, which means being in the middle between the two Knowing the similarities and differences are important to know, because it can help people to understand each other in some ways. It can also provide some insight into a person on why they do some of the things they do and at times change their feelings or perspective. Recently, however, personality researchers have begun looking more closely at the smaller ways we can and do change (McGowan, 2008). Being able to understand each other’s personality traits can also help us develop relationships and maybe in some cases
Introversion is defined as a preference and they prefer a rich inner life to a vast social life, talking with a close friend to sharing stories in a group, developing their ideas internally to interactively. They could not think spontaneously but they are good thinkers when they are still and unmoving. They prefer to follow an inner guide. The time that they feel invasion, they automatically turn off to protect their central sources. At this time they could not access themselves, and they may feel that they have to practice extroversion, go underground, or go crazy( Helgoe 2008).
Studies have shown that there is a difference between an introvert's brain and an extrovert's brain. During the thought process, an introvert's brain
Let’s first start with what extroverts and should know about introverts. In the article, Dembling mentions introverts don't need alone time because they don’t like their friends, but because very simply, they just need time to themselves, and time to regroup and relax. Additionally, she mentions introverts don’t sit quietly because they are judging anyone, but because they like to watch and observe what others are saying and doing. I can relate to that one, as I catch myself doing that often.
It is important to let introverts do, what they can do best. Our society should not only accept, but also support both sides of the spectrum, the introverts and the extroverts. So many important things have been done by people, who referred themselves as “introverts” like Ghandi, Rosa Sparks or Steve Wozniak. “They all took the spotlight, even though every bone in their bodies was telling them not to”, Cain explained. “People could feel that these leaders were at the helm not because they enjoyed directing others and not out of the pleasure of being looked at. They were there because they had no choice, because they were driven to do what they thought was
While working with the kindergarteners, I saw an even mix of extroverts and introverts. When working in the art room I saw several introverts. The introverts I worked with had qualities of being self-sufficient, focused, good listeners, and when you do get them to talk they have good thoughts. I saw this in the art room when I was giving directions for the project of the day, they would listen intently. Once they started working on the project, they were focused to get it done and wanted to do it without any help. In the other rooms, such as dramatic play, I saw a lot more extroverts. Extroverts depended on others around them, enjoy being in the center of attention, have broad interest and they love to
I believe that most people are neither introverts nor extroverts but are a mix of both. There are many people who tend to display characteristics of the introvert and the extrovert. For example: I myself have many of the characteristics of the introvert and the extravert. I am sometime considered reserved because I do not like to be the center of attention, especially in groups of people, this is a characteristic of the introvert. I love to be surrounded by people and to communicate with people, which is a characteristic of the extravert. I would rather email or text people instead of talking on the
