1.0 Introduction We generally use the word stress when we feel that everything seems to have become too much, we are overloaded and wonder whether we really can cope with the pressures placed upon us. Anything that poses a challenge or a threat to our well-being is a stress. Some stresses get you going and they are good for you, without any stress at all many say our lives would be boring and would probably feel pointless. Stress is normal and neutral (neither positive nor negative) (Boss, 1988; Selye, 1956). It is a continuous outcome variable in that there are degrees of stress (Boss, 1988) as well as a categorical variable. Types of individual stress based on degrees of stress included deprived, optimal and excessive (Selye, 1956). A derived degree of stress may result in a lake of motivation while optimal stress tends to lead to motivation. Excessive stress may lead to crisis. Stress can come from any situation or thought that makes you feel frustrated, angry, or anxious. Everyone sees situations differently and has different coping skills. For this reason, no two people will respond exactly the same way to a given situation. Additionally, not all situations that are labeled stressful are negative. Facing the mid-term test, completing the thesis and doing the assessments work for each subject may not be perceived as threatening. When the threat is seen, your body secrete the hormones that activate the "fight or flight" response. As a result stress can cause mental and physical damage. The American Institute of Stress (pg 3) (www.stress.org) states 43 percent of all adults suffer adverse health effects due to stress. 80 percent of all visits to primary care physicians are for stress-related complaints or disorders. (pg 3) The leading cause of death are caused by “lifestyle diseases,” for people who have a difficult time coping with stress. Stress is a common feeling/emotion that every American or anyone around the world tends to emulate. The struggles of life influence what we may not always notice. Stress isn’t always bad, it can actually become helpful in some situations to achieve a certain task at hand. The effects of stress can vary from a common headache to sleeping problems. My definition of stress is the unforeseen, surprising response of the brain, to pleasant and bothersome stimuli. Selye (1936) identifies stress to be recognized by all, but nobody comprehends what it is. All of us have been exposed to stress; however, each one of us interprets stress differently, and our coping strategies vary from individual to individual.
