I am the only Millennial in my department that is mostly comprised Baby Boomers and a few Generation X coworkers. As a millennial growing up in the age of progressive technological advances and communication mediums. I tend to prefer to communicate through email for smaller ticketed items that only require a short and simple answer and I prefer to meet face-to-face for more important and complex messaged needing to be conveyed without opening the door for miscommunication to occur. However, I have noticed that my Baby Boomer colleagues prefer to meet in-person regardless of the topics importance. This means I frequently participate in impromptu meetings or side desk chats for items that could have been discussed in a simple email exchange. …show more content…

One of the benefits of technology is being able to make our work more visible and accessible to a broader audience from all over the global. The con is the broader audience’s relationship to our work often remains on the surface level and rarely transitions from a liker to an invested supporter and activist. Recognizing this challenge and the limits technology has in its ability to increase our supporter interconnectivity with the work through participation has led us to seek out more face-to-face interaction with our core supporters. This intentional move to identify and engage with our core supporters in a more meaningful interpersonal way has been the key to increased participation. We have accomplished this by promoting our services in person through the building of trust and interconnectivity followed by guiding them to our website to learn more information about our work and the services we provide. Search engines have mastered the ability to collect, organize and synthesize information in order to provide quick results, making answers readily available. The con to this convenience is our growing reliance on searching the web for answers instead stretching our cognitive ability and interacting with others in order to gain insight from their knowledge and experiential learning. We have turned to the web instead of to each other, making our work environments less collaborative and more socially dependent. Personally, I have been and to some extent still am inclined to search the web rather than interrupt my colleagues for answers or ideas; however, I have learned that some ideas need the perspective of another human being. Each time I share my web research with a colleague, an infusion of genius happens because either both of us are inspired by learning something new or the information helps validate my coworker’s knowledge about the subject, resulting in my further enlightenment through the sharing of their knowledge. Conclusion Interpersonal communication is the key to interconnectivity, expression, learning and knowledge. It is a universal unavoidable element that connects us all together. Face-to-face meetings can never be replaced by a monitor, therefore it is important to cultivate relationships in order to learn from and with each
