Infant Observations

Today is my first day doing my practice observation in the Infant Room Classroom Number 3, my fears are how the infants go reaction to see me because I am new person for them that they never have seen before, how the teacher go feel to have a student in the classroom, if they will support me and cooperate with practice, and how the parents will response to see a new teacher in the classroom, I know for my teaching experience that parents are very special about the people who is round to their children.

Toddlers and preschoolers are at different developmental stages, and therefore require their teachers to use different approaches and techniques to further learning. I completed my observations at the Bright and Early Children’s Learning Center where I observed a toddler classroom and a preschool classroom. My observations took place from 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. on the 21st and 28th of September. The first day that I observed I was placed in the toddler classroom which had two teachers, Miss Ashlynn and Miss Miranda, and six students, most of whom were two years old. In the preschool classroom there was one teacher, Miss Stephanie, and eight students, each of whom were 3 years old or 4 years old. While the rooms were physically similar, the teachers used different strategies and activities to appeal to the different age groups.

During my observation at the preschool here at Harper, I looked around and realized a lot of similarities and differences it has; compared to other daycare and preschool centers. The age of children in the room I observed was ages 3-5 with one lead teacher, and depending on the ratio of how many kids showed up on that day, about three or four helping teachers. The program was set up to a very open, happy and overwhelming setting. Every furniture and object in the room had a sign saying what it was, and then underneath the typed out word was the children’s way of writing what the object was. It was 9:45am on Tuesday, October 20th, 2015: The children were taking part in an art activity. On the piece of paper, each child had a drawn out bubble lettered number one. They were given each given four popsicle sticks and a small pile of glue. The teacher instructed them to use the paint brush to spread the glue out inside the number one and then place the popsicle sticks on top.

Obiel Macedo, a one year and seven month old infant accomplished many tasks on the developmental checklist. I went to his house, his mother and baby sister were present while I was with him. We sat down and I handed the infant a small container filled with different size blocks. Immediately he grabbed the container, poured out the blocks and began to build a tower quickly. Once he was done creating the tower of blocks, a few seconds later he knocked it down vigorously and started all over again. Then, I handed him a red crayon and a blank sheet of paper, but instead of writing on the paper he went up to the wall and scribbles spontaneously.

In addition, during my observation, Sydney was able to demonstrate the following gross motor skills. Sydney was placed in a sitting position on the table as well on the floor and was able to sit up unassisted for brief periods of time. Although Sydney appeared to be unstable at times, her mother closely spotted her to ensure her safety. Most babies are able to sit up by themselves unassisted for short periods of time (Oswalt, n.d.). By being able to sit upright and support the weight of her head in the proper position, shows Sydney has developed her core body strength and has met this developmental milestone. In addition, while lying on a blanket on her stomach, Sydney was able to lift her chest and head. For this assessment I chose to observe my six- month old daughter, Abigail, interacting with her mother, Melissa. Abigail is our third child and Melissa is comfortable with her role as mother. Abigail was born full term and is a healthy baby. All developmental milestones have been reached up until this point. She is a happy baby.

Within my ten hours of observation, I witnessed an Early Childhood, Childhood, and Middle Childhood classroom. Through the duration of these hours, I visited School 17 and School 30. My seven hours at School 17 consisted of experiences within an Early Childhood and a Childhood setting. The Early Childhood hours occurred in a Pre-Kindergarten classroom setting with Ms. Mitrakos. The Childhood observations occurred in a first-grade classroom with Ms. Hordan. My three hours at School 30 involved experiences within a Middle Childhood setting. These observation hours occurred in a 6th-grade math class. My observations within both schools inspired me to continue my passion for Early Childhood Education.

I observed a child named Caiden Rawson. He is 24 months old. I observed him on his farm in Kosciusko, MS for two hours. According to chapter one of our book, he is currently in the developmental stage of infancy.

For each shelf, center, table, chair and anything that can hold a label, I would like to have it label with a little clip art picture on it. For the chairs around the eating tables, which are rectangular, I would like to have the children's name printed on them. That way the children know what is there chair and they see their name each time they want to sit on it. I believe that it is very important for children to associate the letters in the word with the actual object. Such as associating the letters S.I.N.K with the actual sink.

In observing a normal newborn's behaviors and activities, reflexes play an important role. They help to identify normal brain and nerve activity. In my observation of Baby A, she demonstrated reflexes of rutting in finding the nipple of her bottle, sucking, head turning and grasping of my fingers. Although she was born full-term, she was quite small in stature and weight. She also showed alertness to senses of sight, hearing, taste and touch. Of course, at first, she slept most of the time while she was in my care, but as she aged, she became more active and alert. The key element to keeping Baby A happy was taking care of her physical needs first…diaper changes, feeding and burping. Although she is still very small in weight and height, she shows no sign of delayed development and is now a happy, healthy toddler.

In this paper, I will analyze the parent–infant interaction of a family of four members comprising of father, mother and two daughters. The mother is a physician in the referral hospital. The mother is a hardworking woman who is obsessed with perfection. She is specialized in pediatrics hence aware of many developmental milestones in infants. The youngest daughter is one and a half years old whereas the firstborn daughter is four years old. For this assignment, an observation of the younger kid was done in the apartment where the family lives.
