Research with infants and hearing has determined that infants are primed to hear human speech and will attune to those sounds rather than others. This can be identified as a biological imperative in order to assure they are cared for by adults. This manner of behavior may not be consistent if there are other sounds that are louder and above the threshold of human language. This researcher hypothesizes that if an infant is presented with two sounds, one of a person saying their name at a low volume and the other a dog barking at a higher volume, the infant will respond and attune to the louder sound. Specifically, the infant will be presented with their name being repeated in a low volume and a dog barking in a high volume. The volume for either sound will not change and will be presented for 2 minutes. The dependent variable will be the infant’s response to the sounds-do they attune to the sound; is there habituation. The subjects will be infants between the ages of 6 months and 12 months. There will be 50 infants and there will not be any limitations based on gender. The researcher will rule out any infants that are sick in order assure that illness does not impair hearing such as a cold or any other hearing related disorders. The infant may not be awake at the time of the experiment or it could be during a nap time. Another variable could be infant discomfort based on needing to eat, change a diaper or other illness induced difficulties which cannot be controlled for well. These concerns could be controlled with preparing the caregiver to assure these needs are met prior to the study. Lastly, the parents or caregivers present are an extraneous variable as if they make sounds or have a response to the sounds presented; this could and probably will impact the infant’s responses. Parents will be encouraged to assure that they do not respond in any way to what takes place hence the need for no deception in this
Today is my first day doing my practice observation in the Infant Room Classroom Number 3, my fears are how the infants go reaction to see me because I am new person for them that they never have seen before, how the teacher go feel to have a student in the classroom, if they will support me and cooperate with practice, and how the parents will response to see a new teacher in the classroom, I know for my teaching experience that parents are very special about the people who is round to their children.
Toddlers and preschoolers are at different developmental stages, and therefore require their teachers to use different approaches and techniques to further learning. I completed my observations at the Bright and Early Children’s Learning Center where I observed a toddler classroom and a preschool classroom. My observations took place from 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. on the 21st and 28th of September. The first day that I observed I was placed in the toddler classroom which had two teachers, Miss Ashlynn and Miss Miranda, and six students, most of whom were two years old. In the preschool classroom there was one teacher, Miss Stephanie, and eight students, each of whom were 3 years old or 4 years old. While the rooms were physically similar, the teachers used different strategies and activities to appeal to the different age groups.
The child I chose to observe was a brown hair, Hispanic 15 month old girl. The reason I chose to observe her is because I have seen her at the daycare before and she is always so happy, and has such a fun personality. When I began to observe her she was just getting to the center, and her parents just dropped her off.
Obiel Macedo, a one year and seven month old infant accomplished many tasks on the developmental checklist. I went to his house, his mother and baby sister were present while I was with him. We sat down and I handed the infant a small container filled with different size blocks. Immediately he grabbed the container, poured out the blocks and began to build a tower quickly. Once he was done creating the tower of blocks, a few seconds later he knocked it down vigorously and started all over again. Then, I handed him a red crayon and a blank sheet of paper, but instead of writing on the paper he went up to the wall and scribbles spontaneously.
Babies prefer the sound of humans interacting to other sounds and from this, they quickly learn to recognise and identify their mother’s voice. Babies form their first relationship through emotional attachments with their mother or main carer. The first year of a baby’s life is a period of incredible growth, and a baby’s brain goes through critical periods during which stimulation is needed for proper development. During the babies first years, visual stimuli or verbal language is necessary for areas of the brain to grow and without this growth, a child’s vision or speaking abilities might be impaired. Infants tend to have different cries for hunger or pain, as well as making other noises. These abilities show your child is gaining communication and pre-language skills. Infants from birth to 6 months will forget about objects they cannot see however they begin to explore objects they can see and grab by putting them in their mouths. They will also follow moving objects with their eyes and look around at nearby objects. Infants in this stage will turn to look at a source of sound. These developmental milestones show a baby’s brain is developing and they are gaining new skills. The development of attachment bonds to other biological figures plays an important role in emotional development. Throughout life, an individual will form several relationships, some of which will be sincere and intimate while others will be superficial. However, collectively these relationships provide the foundation of our communities, families, and friendships and become essential to our survival as a species. A secure attachment bond can be classified as the interactive emotional relationship between a caregiver and infant involving the emotional responses of the caregiver to the infant 's cues (Bowlby, 1969). These emotional responses can be expressed in a variety of forms including gestures, sounds, or even movements. Thus, this interactive emotional relationship between the caregiver and infant brings the two closer together creating an environment that allows the infant to feel safe and secure, further developing their ability to communicate and interact with others (Bowlby, 1969).
In addition, during my observation, Sydney was able to demonstrate the following gross motor skills. Sydney was placed in a sitting position on the table as well on the floor and was able to sit up unassisted for brief periods of time. Although Sydney appeared to be unstable at times, her mother closely spotted her to ensure her safety. Most babies are able to sit up by themselves unassisted for short periods of time (Oswalt, n.d.). By being able to sit upright and support the weight of her head in the proper position, shows Sydney has developed her core body strength and has met this developmental milestone. In addition, while lying on a blanket on her stomach, Sydney was able to lift her chest and head. For this assessment I chose to observe my six- month old daughter, Abigail, interacting with her mother, Melissa. Abigail is our third child and Melissa is comfortable with her role as mother. Abigail was born full term and is a healthy baby. All developmental milestones have been reached up until this point. She is a happy baby.
Within my ten hours of observation, I witnessed an Early Childhood, Childhood, and Middle Childhood classroom. Through the duration of these hours, I visited School 17 and School 30. My seven hours at School 17 consisted of experiences within an Early Childhood and a Childhood setting. The Early Childhood hours occurred in a Pre-Kindergarten classroom setting with Ms. Mitrakos. The Childhood observations occurred in a first-grade classroom with Ms. Hordan. My three hours at School 30 involved experiences within a Middle Childhood setting. These observation hours occurred in a 6th-grade math class. My observations within both schools inspired me to continue my passion for Early Childhood Education.

During the course of my internship, I frequently wondered about the reasons why babies cry. Despite my best efforts to appease everything that I thought might be the problem, sometimes the baby would continue to scream and cry. Harding notes that babies do not cry out of a desire to relay a particular message, but that they merely cry due to distress or discomfort. However, when others respond to the cry as if the baby is trying to communicate a particular message, that it can help the caregiver to differentiate between different types of cries and other signals given by the infant. This can in turn possibly influence the baby’s recognition of the effects his or her vocalizations has on the behavior of others.

The key to understanding children is observation. As observers, we begin to look for daily patterns in their behavior. Once patterns of behavior are recognized, the observer can then give positive guidance in securing the child’s developmental needs.
