Before the telephone was invented, people struggled to communicate in many ways. They usually sent letters, although it took forever to send just one. Some used fire to communicate and sent out smoke signals. Others sent messages from hilltop to hilltop by raising or bringing down a semaphore towers arms. Also, lanterns were used to flash out a message in a code called Morse code. Morse code was sent by wires through the telegraph, but you had to know how to interpret the code in order to use it. Although people were excited about this new way of communication, there were some negative aspects of the telephone. First, when the telephone first came out, people were worried that other people could hear or listen into their discussions. Once in awhile, this actually occurred on party lines where more than one family shared a telephone line. Also, operators in small communities sometimes listened in on discussions because they were nosey. Second, there were some environmental concerns with the telephone. First, it gave people more information. Before the telephone, information had to come to people from books and the daily paper. People also had to depend on other people's memories and travel patterns. Now, people could find out about new news anytime, just by grabbing their phone and dialing a number. Second, the telephone could now be used for emergency services. In fact, the first telephone call was Alexander Graham Bell calling his assistant to ask for help. Lastly, the telephone helped people connect with each other more. Companies promoted the telephone to many organizations to increase efficiency, spare time, and have their customers in awe.
