For years and years, the internet has progressed so much. So much that communication and our lifestyles have reached a whole new level. One of the many revolutionary inventions is called social networking sites or social media. Social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and many more, are where people gather on the internet, create a personalized profile about themselves, and interact with other people around the world. Social media can help contact friends, family, and other people long distance. However, our priorities have completely changed to “life isn’t measured by the number of breaths you take, but by how many likes you get on Instagram.” With social media, people seem to lose touch from reality. A “catfish” is a person who creates a fake profile or profiles on social media and pretend to be someone that they are not, getting deep feeling or pity from the other party. In Catfish, people send emails to Nev Schulman and his filmmaker buddy Max Joseph, telling them they are stuck in an online relationship with someone they have been talking to for months or even years. They don’t know exactly who they are and haven’t seen their face in real life and want to meet them in person, which is where Nev and Max come in. Nev and Max then track down the person, leading them to the two people to meet in the flesh for the first time. Some of the results were the catfisher was not the person from the profile pictures because they were afraid of their own appearance. Some of them were just using and manipulating the other party to get what they want and some of them were the real deal. Nev says in an interview for the website Zap2it,”we find these two people who, either on the same side or opposite sides of an issue, have been working at understanding themselves better or hiding from themselves or afraid to deal with something. And the issues that we've uncovered are an incredible cross sample of issues that young people are dealing with right now. Things like self-esteem, weight and obesity, people who are uncertain of or afraid of accepting their sexuality." Like what Nev said, these …show more content…
Social media is good for business. You can get more exposure through social media. The fastest way to advertise a product is through social media. You get feedback instantly on the product through social media. You can even attract potential customers just for them seeing your page online. Social media is, of course, good for connecting with your friends and family around the world. Even making new friends or even reuniting with a long-lost relative. Anais and Samantha were two girls living in different countries. Anais spotted Samantha on a Youtube video and noticed she looked exactly like her. Anais then reached out to Samantha through Facebook and the two then decided to meet each other. They then realized that they were twins separated at birth. If Anais hadn’t reached out to Samantha through Facebook, they may have never known that they were twins. Social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter allow you to find and connect with just about anyone, from customers to a twin you didn’t even know about. Browsing these sites can make you feel connected to a larger community, but such an easy, casual connection in an electronic environment can also have its
Since the Bulletin Board System there has been hundreds, and counting, of social networks created: most notably Twitter, Facebook, Kik, Snapchat, and Instagram. Today there are just over 3 billion active Internet users (45% of the world’s internet users), 2.1 billion of those people have social media accounts (Jeffbullas.com). People use social media for many numerous reasons. Most use social media to stay close to relatives and maintain social ties. Some of people’s most essential daily needs are accounted for by social media: whether it be interacting with friends or coworkers, following politics, or following the latest fashion trend set by the Kardashian
In this day and age it is not uncommon to see a family at dinner with their heads in their phones instead of submersing themselves in conversation with one another. Friends and family alike know more about each other by looking at ones Facebook wall rather than by holding a simple conversation. Ones life is no longer played out by communicating face to face or even through a landline, but rather by Facebook statuses and Instagram posts. It is no secret that social media has become

“Catfishing” a way for scammers to make up fake profiles and identities to trick people into romantic relationships. A story that I found in the Huffington Post that was interesting what that of Marissa Williams, a 19 year old female of Tuscaloosa, Alabama who lured men into her home with the use of Facebook. During this time she was living with her aunt and uncle. Her aunt did not like what she was doing on the Internet because she would bring over these strange men and preform sexual activities in exchange for money (2015). Marissa got so furious with her aunt and having her in her business that she deleted her and blocked her from seeing her Facebook. In return the aunt “catfished” the niece by creating a fake profile. She created a profile
In today's time there are many people hide behind a screen with a fake identity just to live the life they never had. While doing this they end up catfishing someone who does not deserve to be treated that way. According to the Merriam Webster, instead of just being some type of fish it has another definition that refers to “a person who sets up a false personal profile on a social networking site for fraudulent or deceptive purposes”(Webster) what tends to throw people off is the fact that the account looks so real, “A ‘catfisher’ may choose to use their own photos yet pretend to be a different age, sex, profession, in a different location, and be single when they are not. A catfisher can also use someone else's photos to create their fake
In most cases there is no repercussions for catfishers and that’s why the problem is still continuing to grow. This issue has made people wary and untrustworthy of who they are really talking to. A recent study showed that 54% of online daters believe someone has put false information in their profile (D’Costa). If someone does fall for the fake profile it can cause emotional damage to the person after finding out that it isn’t real. There are many stories involving people falling for these fake profiles, including the high profile case involving Manti Te’o who played football for the University of Norte Dame. He was involved with a girl who he believed to be real, until he got a call saying she had died. After receiving the news, he made a
Our intended project will be focused on the idea of “online identity,” with a primary focus on the idea of “catfishing.” We are looking at how the “younger” generation is getting more tech-savvy, but at the same time, they’re becoming more gullible with things they access online.
The person might even be in prison trying to get close to their catfishing victim for emotional, financial or physical harm later.
Although a genuine fan of the show, it dramatizes and endorses the use of deceit in social media for the use of self-validation. Users “catfish” others for a variety of reasons. Most of the time, the person hiding is obese, not pretty in society’s eyes, of the wrong gender, race or social class. Catfish unintentionally reinforces societal beauty standards in pop culture and to millions of viewers.
In the new generation people are more into using social media has a way to interact with others more than ever. Twitter, Instagram, Facebook , and Myspace has become the new norm into networking, making friends, finding possibly a match and making a love connection. These social medias allow people to create profiles in which they can alter their information. This results in many incident where people are not who they said they are. Can you remember the days before you had a Twitter, Snapchat or Instagram? Ever looked back at your life and questioned what was more important to you back then to what’s important to you now. As we became older, technology grew rapidly stronger and this new aged world that is based on sharing, likes, emojis and views has turned us into figurines to promote one’s ego and popularity. I mean, who does not want to share about what extravagant thing you did this past summer or how hot this puppy dog filter made you look in this photo?
Social media is described, by the Merriam-Webster dictionary (2015), as “forms of electronic communication (as Web sites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (as videos)”. As few as 10 years ago the term social media was yet to be coined, but within that decade the use of these blogs, websites and sharing platforms has increased exponentially with no plateau in sight. From creating Instagram accounts for household pets, to sharing Halloween themed baking ideas over Pinterest, people today have access to social media outlets for almost everything. Today about 74% of people ages 18-65 use some form of a social networking site (Pew, 2014). Facebook takes the lead in social media usage with about 71% of those adults. LinkedIn and Pinterest are tied for second at 28% of users, 26% use Instagram, and Twitter falls last in the top 5 most used social medias with 23% of users (Pew, 2014). In September of 2013 the Pew Research Center measured that 90% of adults ages 18-29 used these social media outlets on a daily basis, which is an astonishing increase from the 9% that was measured in February 2005 (Pew, 2014). Due to the fact that young adults are increasingly involving themselves in these online platforms, it is very important to understand the long term and psychological effects (such as depression, social anxiety,
Social media has become an important part of our lives. At first, it was just a trend but it has become so much more than just that. In today’s world, you have so many different social media apps but the most popular ones would be Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, and Twitter. Some people live their lives through social
The meaning behind the word catfishing is luring someone into a relationship by means of a fictional online persona (Rothman 2003). This is a Deviant act because you’re pretending to be someone that you are not. Many times this just isn’t something that only lasts a month, many people will be in these online relationships for years and finding out that someone was not who they say they are is a devastating thing to go through. MTV was the first place to pick up on this new concept called catfishing. The TV show has two hosts named Nev and max. The show got picked up when Nev created his own personal documentary at Sundance and then from there took off because so many people were going through the same thing (Rothman 2003).
