Most of my free time is spent involving myself within my community. I volunteer at Celerity Dyad Charter School, St. Odilia School, church youth group, and cleaning my community. I enjoy helping out since I know I’m improving my community. These experiences have helped me develop skills of interacting with people from different cultures. When I go to Bible Study, I help out the little kids there and help them study. I also help around the school. For example, on the day of the Valentine's Dance, I stayed with my cousin and helped clean up after the dance even though I wasn't an NJHS member. I volunteered without hesitation. Also, the day of school orientation I helped my cousin (who is in the NJHS)give people their schedules. Sometimes when I finish all of my work early, I help the teachers. Community service, one of the several pillars outlined by the National Honors Society (NHS), is defined as the desire to work and serve the community in order to improve the conditions for the citizens who dwell in it. Most importantly, those who uphold those standards do so without the need of money, or recognition; they are simply intrinsically motivated to make the world a better place. It wasn’t until I volunteered at an event hosted by the Jubilee Center that I learned the true meaning of community service and charity.

Winston Churchill’s quote "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give" embodies what community service is really about. Over the years I have had the pleasure of working for several organization and volunteering in a variety of different areas. There has been a community service experience that changed my life tremendously though. Serving my community and giving back to others has always been a huge part of my life. From a young age, my parents instilled in me a love of helping those around me and a want to make my community a better place. In high school, I was a part of a program for college readiness, the Upward Bound Program. The program played an enormous role in my enrollment to Florida International University, therefore I intend to keep in touch with them and I would pay them a visit them during my free times. Imagine immigrating to a foreign country where uncertainty and unfamiliarity awaits. That was my family in October 2008 when we arrived in America as refugees, deprived of basic necessities such as food and clothing. We faced difficulties adjusting to the culture and meeting our needs. However, volunteers of all ages from different charities delivered and donated foods, clothing, and presents, and warmly welcomed us with comfort during a time of major adjustment in our lives. They guided my family in our transition as we apply for schools and jobs. Volunteering was also a rare and uncommon practice in my birth country, so the number of volunteers helping us in America made a good impression of the country to my family. As I grew up and attend high school in America, I realized the amazing and endless opportunities for young people to make a difference in other’s lives by feeding the homeless, responding to natural disasters, caring for the elderlies, cleaning the community, saving the lives of animals, and much more. Community service should be required to graduate high school because it provides essential skills, builds character, and promotes higher education for a successful life.

I think one of my most important volunteer jobs is being classroom assistant. Not necessarily teaching but helping out in the classroom, setting things up for the children and when it’s outdoor playtime being an next set of eyes. Teachers can always use the extra help in the classroom, with so many students around. Next is helping out in the kitchen, helping to serve the food the children, the staff can focus on getting the children where they need to be and preparing the food. The next is people willing to help in the office, this can just be simple filling to helping to make sure that certain items are in stock. It’s been proven that teenagers (ages 13-20 years old) actually benefit from doing community service. The service benefits them personally, when applying to jobs and more importantly college. I did notice that having multiple accounts of community service did in fact help me when it came to applications. It has shown that I have developed a sense of responsibility and social connections throughout my community. By volunteering it has also helped me condense my search for a career, by showing me what they do day to day.

Kids and teens in school these days are told to work hard to benefit their future. There’s so many options for colleges and careers. Sometimes it’s hard for students to get recognized by colleges even if there academics are amazing or you're a stellar athlete. These students are missing a piece, community service.
