When I started my first semester of college, I was very worried about writing essays and research papers. I felt like my writing skills lacked greatly compared to other students. I knew a few things of which I could improve on right off the bat, such as my vocabulary skills and organizational skills. To say the least I was very nervous about how my writing composition course would be like and did not think it would go very well for me. However, I learned so many techniques that have helped my writing skills grow. It all started with learning how to stay organized, planning what to write in your essay in outline form and sticking to it really helped when writing essays. These techniques helped me become more confident in my essays and allowed writing essays to become a lot easier. The few aspects in which I am strong in while writing essays is my ability to stay organized, focused and be very clear about what I am writing. Nonetheless, there is always room for improvement; a few things that I can think of being grammar and punctuation due to no revising, embedding quotes smoothly, and citing sources correctly. Among my strengths possibly my strongest ability is to write a well organized essay. Although it may be due to the fact that I use an outline for the type of paper that is being written, I do pride myself on my ability to follow the format rather well while staying organized. Professor Willison complimented my process paper by saying “very good organization” when really
Before attending the University of Memphis, my writing abilities and thought process was quite narrow. Writing papers and essays have always been a struggle for me, I do not really have the best skills in writing. Entering college has showed me the importance of writing and how its importance will never vade. Knowing that, one of my ultimate goals in college is to improve in my writing, not only for myself, but also for my future in wanting to pursue a degree in nursing.
When I first started taking this class, I had a hard time writing my essays. The main reason I had a rough time was because the last time I had written an essay was in my freshman year of high school. I have improved on many things along the way. I now continue to improve even more. One major aspect that I have improved on is my revision process.
They are still very much developing, and I want to continue improving them throughout my life. In this class, we only wrote one essay, so I think with more practice comes stronger writing. I heard in English 1: Novel/Short Story there's a lot of essays/writing, so I think that's one way I can refine my writing skills. Another way I can improve my writing skills is by putting in the effort to revise it a bit more than just reading through it once to check for really noticeable spelling and grammar errors. By revising my own work, I can realize what aspect of writing I'm having the most trouble with, and work from
Going through high school, I would always tell myself that writing papers was the hardest thing possible and that it took a very educated human being to become a writer. As I grew older I started to realize that you could be just an average person and just write anything and it could mean something. I started realizing that I actually enjoyed writing because I could say what I wanted and it felt great to just express myself when doing so. Although I enjoyed it my teachers told me that the formatting was super sloppy and helped me to improve on that. As I go through college I hope to improve on my vocabulary, sentence structure, and formatting in order to become a better writer.
I used to believe that professional writers are instinctively good at writing. However, professor Watson showed me that unlike an athlete or a musician, a writer is not born with God-given skills. It takes practice in order to maintain their profound writing skills. In other words, all writers have to start off somewhere, and it is usually at the bottom and progresses upwards. As a freshman, I took a workload writing course where Professor Watson helped me to become aware of my weaknesses and shifted her style of teaching in a way that it motivated me to improve my writing. She explicitly noticed my struggle with transitioning from a basic five paragraph essay structure into university level writing and forced me to go beyond manipulating that structure for my essays. Throughout my time in that course, I was able to focus on my weaknesses by avoiding a poor thesis, having a structured format, focusing deeper on the prompts, and providing more detail on my main topic.
First one semester of my college year is going towards the end and I am just happy about there will be no classes or homework for me for a while. I never enjoyed nor good at writing a few pages of paper. If there is any homework assignments are due on the same date, I would always do the assignments for other classes, then come back to the paper and start staring into the computer screen for hours rather than moving my fingers on keyboard and type. Honestly writing is not my favorite thing to do in this world, but I know I could do better when I try. GSW 1110 is the class that proved me that.
Most people expect professional writers to be instinctively good at writing. However in reality, like athletes and musicians, a writer is not born with God-given skills. It takes practice in order to maintain their profound writing skills. In other words, all writers have to start off somewhere, and it is usually at the bottom and progresses upwards. Coming from a basic five paragraph essay structure taught by my high school teacher made the transition into university level writing difficult for me because all I knew how to do was manipulate that structure to use for my essays. As a freshman, I took a workload writing course where professor Watson helped me to become aware of my weaknesses and improve on those weaknesses by avoiding a poor thesis, not following a structured format, engaging myself more deeply with the prompts, and going into more detail on certain topics.
As the first semester of my college career comes to a close, I cannot think of a more beneficial class for me to have taken than this university seminar. I learned a lot about a variety of different relationships and the class definitely put a new perspective on how I saw romantic, familial, and platonic relationships. I am and always will be experiencing these relationships all throughout my life, and learning more about them now will help me understand how to approach them and keep the relationship strong and healthy in the future.
Six months ago, as my first semester of college comes to an end, I was diagnosed with severe depression. The news of my family and I moving across the world after my high school graduation is unsurprising, but it signals the time for me to make up my mind. This, along with my new found existential crises, is more or less the reason for the formation of my illness. However, in an ironic twist of fate, my depression, the dreadful enemy of my family, social life and academic achievements, plays the part of the main motivator to push me towards my final decision in exchange.
Finally, I was on my way home from class, I could not believe I was almost finished and done with my First Semester of College. I could see the finish line from where I was. I just had to type my last two pages of my final exam paper and submit. I got home about 6 o'clock, I had had plenty of time to type two pages before 11:59, so I decided to relax. I ate, Watched my favorite show on TV, and started scrolling on my Instagram and Facebook. Time was flying and before I knew It, it was almost 7:30 and time for My son’s bedtime. We did our regular nightly routine and laid down for bed. As soon as he’s asleep, I would get up and finish my report, I mean it's only two pages left. Slowly I could feel plans start to change. I felt like I was laying on a thousand soft feathers, wrapped in my blanket like a butterfly’s cozy cocoon. I was sedated by its embrace and sleep in a matter of minutes.
One way that I can improve my writing is by being more attentive to what I am actually writing instead of allowing my feelings to overwhelm my thoughts. I can fix my problem of losing focus on what I am writing by going back and rereading what I have already written before continuing on. I need to focus on making sure that I am writing from a first person point of view instead of accidentally changing over to second person out of habit. After I personally proofread what I have written, I should either have a peer edit my paper or use an online resource from the classroom to help edit any mistakes I may have missed. Improving the way I write my essays is something I believe I can 100% improve on by staying focused.
Back in the day, I use to love writing papers because i feel as if I was the king of writing papers. Well, that was not the case when I got to college. When I started writing college essays my confidence for writing essays quickly plummeted. I found myself struggling to try to write papers based on the college rubric and heavy grading. I so used to high school teachers skim reading over my papers and not paying attention to detail, and I was not worried about references pages and looking for credible sources. Everything was easy in high school but in college, you actually have to try to write a proper essay to earn a good grade. English competition and research helped me a lot with understanding how to write an essay, with the information and experience I had in this class will allow me to write better papers for future classes, it helped become more vocal and confident when I speak so when I am presenting anything I am more comfortable and I have also have learned to see both viewpoints of an argument and not just mind. Since I am becoming a veterinarian this will help me see how the owner
Writing is not just as simple as putting words down on a document or a piece of paper, it is a process. Within this intricate process are steps that involve more than just writing, such as critical thinking, planning, and editing. Using these steps has not only helped me when planning an essay but also when composing one. Throughout this course, I have managed to improve many skills and gain a lot of strengths, but I still possess some weaknesses. Overall, I believe my strengths have definitely outgrown these weaknesses and have led to a better, more high-quality writing process which leads to improved essays.
Last year was my first year of college. Freshmen year as a transition for me from High School to College, I don’t think I did well in adjusting to college life. I’m regretting lots thing I could have done, but I didn 't. I wish I could be like other ordinary students live in the dorm, they have more opportunities to involve school’s activity, and more chances to get to know more people. As a freshman in college, I was scared about failing my classes so I tried my best to work on every assignment in order to have a good grade. However I still had all kinds of new experiences, like driving by myself to school, a new kind of teaching system and meeting new friends. I had many interesting assignments from all my class, but my English 10M class was the class that helped me improve on my writing. In my English 10M class we had many essay assignments and we were required to do at least three drafts before turning it in. We also had a chance to do peer review and get feedback from professors, which helped a lot for me to understand where I made mistakes and what I needed to work on. After taking an English 10M class, I had unforgettable essay experiences and I learned a lot from it.
College is a time for discovering oneself while educating themselves on how to live on their own efficiently. College also develops a student’s way of life that they will carry on throughout their adult life’s. I am currently a sophomore and in the two years that I have attended here I have lived with a roommate as well as by myself. Living in these two different environments has affected my territoriality in many different ways. For me personally, college has changed my view on personal space, living space, personal property, privacy, hygiene and how to talk to new people. These views changed significantly from my first year when I was living with a roommate to now when I am living by myself.
