How Is Atticus Finch A Likeable Character

Atticus Finch is the Father figure to the main character Scout Finch and her brother Jem in the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Atticus may not be liked by some of the characters in the book but the way he treats people makes him a likeable character in real life. In this novel Atticus and his family live in Maycomb Alabama. Atticus’ wife died when his children were little and he is left with the task of raising Jem and Scout by himself. Atticus is a lawyer who sticks up for what he believes is right. An example of this is when he makes the decision to defend Tom Robinson, an African American male against false rape charges. Atticus is a likeable character in life because he is wise, open minded and kind. To begin with wisdom is a strong example of what makes Atticus a likeable character. Atticus’ wisdom is evident when he is giving advice to his kids or having conversations. An example of this is when Atticus tells Scout, “ you never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view--- …show more content…

But in real life his treatment of people know matter there social status or there race makes him a likeable character. An example of this is when Atticus explains to Scout what “nigger-lover” means saying “nigger-lover is just one of those terms that don’t mean anything like snot-nose.”(Lee 108) Atticus and his family are constantly bombarded by members of the community for him taking on the case to defend a black person from accusations against rape. These accusations against rape. However these allegations don’t seem to bother him because in his heart he knows what he's doing is right. He also treats Calpurnia, the maid who works at his home, the same as he would treat anybody else. He even accepts and allows Calpurnia to correct his children's behaviour. Atticus views everyone as equals and it makes him a more likeable
