The objective of this reflection is to expose critically how I could evaluate my own experience with relation to the theories and ideas about Leadership. In other words, how this lecture and insights changed my personal notion, as well, how I could amplify my knowledge about this subject. But I assume that the most important is to demonstrate how the application of Leadership skill is relevant in my career in the future. I have chosen three topics I thought was more relevant to develop my personal reflections connecting with my experience and why to comprehend these topics will be essential to my development: - Leadership and Management - Charismatic and Transformational Leadership - Leadership and Gender Summarizing the idea of Leadership that I have researched, in my opinion, is the capacity to conduct followers to reach goals. Leaders convince followers the necessity of a leadership group to achieve the success. And although, followers use their own expertise to complete a job, they need to be driven by a Leader. A Leader exerts a certain power and influence in their follower that can be direct or indirect. An effective leader knows how to extract the best ability from each follower and although the skill belongs to the followers, some of them perform better when is conducted by a Leader. The ability to influence, comprehends and agree with others about what is necessary to be completed and how doing it as such, as to support individuals and group effort to
What is leadership? Leadership by definition is the ability of an individual or organization to guide other individuals, teams, or organizations. Without leadership many would just follow one another's actions like blind sheep. Many of the powerful shifts in American history were started by men and women who made the decision to guide and instruct one another rather than being a follower.
Before going through this journey of self-discovery, my view of leadership was accurately described by John C. Maxwell “ Leadership is influence.” (Maxwell, para. 25, 2012). I believed, before taking this class and Northouse’s (2013) assessments, leaders were defined by the extent to which they could influence others to achieve company goals. I thought that, when discussing leadership, the leader was the most important aspect of the leader-member dyad and that it was the leader who had the greatest influence over how successful the organization was. Leaders themselves, in my view, should have been the focus of leadership studies and it should have been up to the leader to develop his/her skills in
In my experience, my idea of leadership is being able to inspire others, motivate, communicate, respect others, listen to individuals, and of course lead from the front. I believe that every leader needs to have the ability to convince his or her followers that they are worthy of being followed. Creating an environment that encourages people to share their opinions and to motivate them to be their best selves is an important aspect of leadership, and allows members of your team to trust you throughout the entire task or mission. No one individual is going to be the same and that is why you as a leader have to be able to push and motivate each individual differently. I strongly believe that good leaders are made rather, and not born. I believe
Leadership is the ability to prepare, coordinate, learn, and follow, a group in a quest to accomplish a specific task/mission, or a state of being over-all successful. Keeping the group’s motivation, dedication, esprit de corps, and over-all well being positive. Ensuring failures are considered learning points for improvement and successes are recognized. Furthermore the ability to foster these abilities in other members of your group as to take your place in the future should be equally as important as the primary result.
Leadership is defined in many different ways by many different academics and professionals. A few words that resonate with the meaning include management, control, guidance, headship, direction and governance. My basic definition for the word describes it as a technique used to manage and guide individuals or groups of individuals in a specific direction to achieve a common goal. However this is a bit too basic for my liking. While conducting the research for this manifesto I found two definitions that I thought were more interesting and quite charming. Tom Landry defines leadership as “getting someone to do what they don’t want to do, to achieve what they want to achieve” (Murphy, 2010). Alternatively Otto Scharmer stated, “at its core, leadership is about shaping and shifting how individuals and groups attend and subsequently respond to a situation” (Scharmer, 2007).
Leadership is an influential word: and its meaning may differ from person to person. Some describe leadership as the people in the highest and most powerful positions within an organization. But as I look back on the positions I have held and the people I would consider leaders, the people I would choose to follow, they were not necessarily the higher ranked people in the organization. They were the people with vision and moral compass who moved the company forward. These people live by their own values and stayed true to these principles every day in their roles within the organization. Those who try to lead by intimidation are not actually leaders but managers, who will have some success in achieving goals but will
The meaning of leadership can vary depending on the person but to me leadership is the way a person, or group, leads a group of people in a task. Everyone has their own form of leadership but I personally prefer to lead by example as well as consult with the group before I make a decision. I feel that with this form of leadership I will never be asking someone to do something that I wouldn’t do myself, and it allows for members to become involved in the decision making.
My perspective of leadership remained constant for a large portion of my life. I never thought about what it takes to become a leader or how various aspects of leadership impact me every day. Over the past three months in this course, I have been given the opportunity to apply different skills and concepts that combined critical thinking and the ability to work towards a common goal with a group of people. The main points being addressed will include my experience with leadership and the value of specific iLead principles. I will also expand on my relationship to integrity and discuss my internal and external behavioral expectations. It is important for apprentices to understand their personal qualities and the value of teamwork so they can
Leadership is a skill that takes most people many years and many mistakes to learn. Being a true leader requires great listening skills and the continuous desire to learn. In this paper, I will discuss the complexity principles of reflection, courage in leadership, and the results of three leadership assessment questionnaires I have taken. The purpose of this paper is to explore my abilities as a leader and discover which areas I require improvement and further learning.
This student has held a lifelong interest in the area of leadership. From as early as age 8, this student has been intrigued with the sense of exuberance, found in personal success and achievement and began to wonder if others could be made to feel the same sense of excitement and belief in themselves. Thus, began this student’s endeavor to helping others “become”, “believe”, “expand” and “succeed”. But, was that leadership or the expression of a trait, or perhaps it was something spiritual or maybe it was an exertion of power over my life or the life of another. To answer the question, “What does leadership mean? ”, this student has selected the article “Leadership is about What We Deliver; Shaping culture, Creating Patterns of Success.”
Webster’s Dictionary defines leadership as “the action of leading a group of people or an organization”. That definition does the word no justice as leadership can look like a great many things to different people, and there are equally as many ways to lead. A leader can lead through fear or respect, by word or by action. Numerous leaders have influenced my career and leadership style to this point. Most notably, the Chief of my first Patrol Boat was one of the biggest influences I have experienced in my career. He conveyed confidence, empowered his people, and exuded the charisma to inspire people to want to be better, if nothing else, to not disappoint him. Simultaneously, he demonstrated the ability to hold people accountable, and
The definition of leadership is the action of leading a group of people or an organization. Leadership may say in definition it is the action of leading people or an organization, but to me it consists of much more than that. Leadership is about leading people to the right morals and lessons, not just taking control. A true leader should set by example, and rub off good traits onto their peers. Leaders should not just lead to be in control or think of themselves in a higher authority, but show their followers the right things to do. They should bring their peers together and teach them how to be strong and work together and lead them to accomplishing success. Also a true leader does not just lead to have the name or title of being a leader, or to be in higher authority, but is a good, well rounded person, and leads with good examples and doing the right thing, and this will eventually rub off and
When it comes to leadership there are many different way to go about defining it, saying that, there is no set definition of leadership. The problem of defining leadership can be seen from two different fundamental difficulties (15). The first notion is that leadership is a multifaceted concept that is subjective to interpretation, such as everyone has their own understanding of what leadership is based off of experience and learning (15). Which makes it very difficult to set a specific definition that everyone agrees upon. The second notion is that leadership is defined and understood is strongly influenced by ones theoretic stance (15). Such as there are those individuals who view leadership as a set of characteristic or traits seen
A leader is defined as a person or thing that holds a dominant or superior position within its field, and is able to exercise a high degree of control or influence over others (Business Dictionary). A leader is so much more than that. A leader takes the initiative, acting creatively during difficult situations. Leadership cannot be taught, but it may be learned through coaching. Leadership is defined as the ability to influence a group toward the achievement of a vision or set of goals. Leadership 101 involves establishing a clear vision, sharing that vision with others so that they will follow willingly, providing the information, knowledge and methods to realize that vision, and coordinating and balancing the conflicting interests of all members and stakeholders.
The objective of this reflection summary is to expose critically how I could evaluate my own experience in relation to the theories and idea about Leadership. As such as how this lectures and insights change my person notion about Leadership and how I could amplify my knowledge about this subject. Also the most important in this reflection is to present the importance of Leadership in my future experience.
