Summary of “How Grading Reform Changed Our School” In “How Grading Reform Changed Our School” by Jeffrey A. Erickson, the Assistant Principal of Minnetonka High School in Minnesota, Erickson assessed how and what things are taken into account when distributing grades. Erickson claimed that the accuracy and truthfulness of grades are misrepresented with many common components that seem to be used for general grading standards. In the first section, Erickson considered the need for a more consistent and clear grading system. When Minnetonka High School decided a new and improved grading system was essential, Erickson pondered what factors should determine a student’s grade. For a considerable amount of time, grades could be affected by presence, manners, determination, extra credit, and contribution. These grades, however, were meant to represent and embody only what a student has learned and the knowledge he or she acquired. Erickson passionately reasoned that many schools, including his own, take in unrelated components in order to determine one’s grade. He stressed that things like disruptive behavior, dishonest work, and averaging can decrease a grade that is supposed to measure a student’s understanding of a subject. Erickson specifically recalled an instance where a student was doing poor in an advanced placement class. Because of her poor performance, the student decided to switch to a regular level class. She then thrived and succeeded, ending her second quarter grade with a B+. To her amazement, her final grade for the semester was a D+.
