To many people, to have courage means to be able to face any difficulty, hardship, or even danger without having any fear. Those that display courage are not always the heroes or leaders in stories but, are sometimes the characters that end up showing the most astonishing amounts of growth throughout a storyline. Often, traits such as courage are used to tell stories and inspire those who wish to make a difference in the world. Once they find a drive or a situation where the risk is pretty much even to the reward, they choose that that will do anything to for either the common good or for their own personal benefit. Mr. Sydney Carton proved that the amount of courage for him to make a difference meant to sacrifice his own life when taking the place of Charles Darnay in execution. The quote “It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known”by Sydney Carton showed Sydney knew what he had to do and he knew that it was the only way to save the people that he loved(Dickens, 386). He knew that by sacrificing his life, he could provide for them and do more good by dying than he could ever do while he was alive. In the face of danger, Sydney rose to the challenge and faced it head on. As he walked to take the place of Charles Darnay, he also met another innocent life about to be executed. However, by being so strong and courageous, he helped comfort the innocent woman as she too was about to stare death in the face. His strength and courage made it easier for the woman to find courage within herself to embrace her unfortunate destiny. This act of courage was also a great example of how contagious courage can
