In Fahrenheit 451 Ray Bradbury uses imagery, figurative language, and syntax to expose the dehumanizing nature and the control of modern technology in this futuristic society. Technology makes people oblivious to the importance of society, and people begin to grow apart making things less personal. It weakens unity, which is the backbone of society. To set the mood, Bradbury uses vivid imagery that reflects his theme of the negative effects of technology. “Her seashell was tamped in her ear again and she was listening to far people in far places, her eyes wide and staring at the fathoms of blackness above her in the ceiling” (45). Rather than having a stimulating conversation with her husband, Mildred isolates herself by listening to thhe seashell earphones. YMontag describes her eyes in a way that represents her emptiness and how she is alienated into being obsessed with her technology. The people in Fahrenheit 451 are so removed from their actual lives, …show more content…
“Nobody listens anymore. I can’t talk to the walls because they’re yelling at me. I can’t talk to my wife; she listens to the walls” (84). In addition to the seashells, people spend as much time on their parlor walls. Since the people of this futuristic society spend so much of their time watching the walls, they don’t think about what’s going on. They feel like they don’t need anything, except entertainment. The government distract the people from real life situations, so they don’t question the system. Mildred believes that the walls, or the ‘family’ are real, showing how much technology has changed the way she thinks between what is real and what is not. Giving the government control over everybody, and what they
In the book Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, Bradbury develops characters by using many forms of figurative language in order to reveal information about a central character, Clarisse. In the text, Bradbury uses similes, metaphors, and personification to expose more about the characters in Fahrenheit 451, such as Clarisse, a friend of the main character Montag. Characterization occurs through the metaphors, similes, and personification used in the text, such as on page 18, when Clarisse is described by Bradbury, stating, “Her face was slender and milk-white.” In this metaphor, Clarisse is described as having a face as white as milk. White can represent purity and innocence, which reveals that Clarisse, too, is pure and innocent. The image of
In the era of technological advancements, one can not help but fall into its trap. It is starting to replace our ability to question, reason and even think. The works of Ray Bradbury in his dystopian novel Fahrenheit 451 portrays the devastating effects of technology in the face of mankind. His worries take him to Faber, an English professor who explains him a great deal about the why the society is the way it is. Fahrenheit 451 is a dystopian novel by Ray Bradbury that demonstrates the future effects of screens and media on society. The main character of the novel is Guy Montag, who begins as a “fireman”, destroying books. Mildred, his wife, is the character who is most affected by technology and is detached from the real world surrounding her. The novel demonstrates a pessimistic view of the technologically advanced world because of the negative impact it has on people. Numerous times characters see a mirror image of themselves, which Bradbury focuses on. The motif of reflections and mirrors are used throughout the novel to symbolize moments of realization, one seeing their true self and one’s impact on society.
In Ray Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451, Bradbury conveys that the conformity of the book’s dystopian society will be cultural, fought against, and ruin for all who follow it. “...technology, mass exploitation, and minority pressure carried the trick... how can I go on burning things... I wonder how many knew it was coming?” (58,110,162).
In “Fahrenheit 451,” the author Ray Bradbury uses mixed metaphors to explain how complex Montag’s initial responses are in a certain situation. One instance of this is, “They were like a monstrous crystal chandelier tinkling in a thousand chimes.” Bradbury uses the comparison of a chandelier to show how their character’s were perceived by Montag. A chandelier is a decorative hanging light, but there is no specific situation to use one. After understanding the definition of a chandelier, the reader can then further investigate into Bradbury’s analogy. Using the word chandelier conveys the reader to see that the women do not have any use within the plotline. The women do not have any depth and they can’t create independent thoughts. They
Albert Einstein said, “I fear that one day technology will surpass our human interaction, the world will have a generation of idiots.” Einstein highlights the use of how technology can cause people to ignore each other and their surroundings. In Fahrenheit 451, people in this society are affected by technology, causing them to not interact and lead someone to not feel special. We all know that technology also helps people in some ways. In the story Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, he uses the indirect characterization of Mildred’s actions and Montag’s concerns to illustrate their lack of interaction leading to Montag’s loss of

Unhealthiness and it’s opposite In Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, his purpose is to inform people on the negative sides of technology and how nature can act as a way for people to think for themselves. I've seen many cases of people using technology for the wrong thing. They think that if they are not on their phones 24/7 they will miss something important. Technology can be a wonderful and helpful thing when used correctly it becomes a problem when it's used constantly. This same thing happens in Ray Bradbury's novel Fahrenheit 451 . Most people living in this society have their whole life controlled. The dystopian society in Ray Bradbury's novel Fahrenheit 451 shares many similarities with today's world.
Ray Bradbury was a well-known author who happened to write several novels, books, and short stories. He was very famous and I have never read anything that he wrote, until I read this book. I wasn’t sure what to expect because I had no idea what it was about and what kind of story it told. Fahrenheit 451 told a breathtaking adventure, was relatable, and it was almost as if I was submerged in this dystopian society, who was forced to live without imagination, books and a sense of wonder. Mr. Bradbury wrote a great, detailed postmodern, piece of literature. Today, I would like to state why I find this a great piece of work, defend it as a postmodern piece and why I think it has traditional American culture in it. Also explain what themes were throughout as well as the symbolism it contained in order to achieve its point of taking down on “Mass Society”.
