The speaker in the song “All of Me” by John Legend uses figurative language more effectively than the song “Just the Way You Are” by Bruno Mars because it uses paradoxes to reveal the complexities of love and affection. For example, when the speaker describes the murkiness of love, he sings, “My head’s underwater/ But I’m breathing fine” (9-10). This demonstrates the complexity of the relationship by revealing that his vision is murky but lives on. This is also a paradox because in water a person can’t breath naturally, but in this instance the speaker reveals that he can indeed breath fine. In contrast, when the speaker describes his lover’s body features as perfect, he sings, “When I see your face/There’s not a thing that I would change”
In “The Beginning of the Song That Diverts the Heart” the metaphor is actually the whole poem. A girl is calling her lover to come to a field and trap birds with her. We can see it is a metaphor for making love through some of the imagery she uses. For example, she mentions for her lover to “hear the sound of my call” (77). Through analyzation this means
Songs, used to create messages, give singers the ability to speak about concerns that are relevant in the current everyday life. A powerful ways songwriters achieve this is by applying the use of imagery. Lyricists use this help readers of literary works to understand specific ideas that the writer is trying to convey. By using symbolism in songs, singers can discuss issues in ways that connect with the listener on a deeper level. Using this method in songwriting is crucial when discussing important subjects; influencing the public in a way that is not direct and more effective. In “ Don’t You Cry For Me,” songwriter Cobi uses repeated images of trees and individuals hanging as metaphors for his feelings towards facing injustice. It is through
“I love you, please say you love me too,” she sings. “I love you / I will be your light, shining through your eyes.” Still yet, we have “Crazy in Love” by Beyonce’ and Jay-Z, hip-hop artists. “Your love’s got me looking so crazy right now,” they sing/rap. “Looking so crazy in love.” Despite the musical differences between all these artists, all three songs/genres were able to give light to the theme of love. And even though the theme may be the same, the music and words were not. So even though two songs may have a theme that is similar, themes in music add diversity.
“Love Poem” by John Frederick Nims is an excellent of example of an author using many types of literary terms to emphasize his theme of a love that is imperfect yet filled with acceptance. In, this poem Nims uses assonance, metaphor, and imagery to support his theme of “Imperfect, yet realistic love”.
In the lines 60-62 in the essay Love’s Vocabulary by Diane Ackerman, Diane uses personification and metaphors to compare a batik to emotion while using personification to give color emotion.The author uses figurative language to giver her words more spice or more emotion quite literally when she uses personification and metaphors in this quote “like a batik created from many emotional colors” the author uses personification to give the color a color and emotion and also uses metaphors to compare the color with emotions.The author uses figurative language to express the idea that love isn’t uniform but that it could be very different to what other people think and that there isn’t only one meaning.Overall
Beginning early in the poem and used heavily throughout, imagery and personification are utilized to exemplify the lovers' argument. The belief that love is never ending is created through never ending connotations, "I'll love you, dear, I'll love you Till China and Africa meet, and the river jumps over the mountain and the salmon sing in the street." The lover uses images of the impossible such as fish singing, the laws of physics breaking, and distant continents meeting. This strengthens the original belief that love is eternal and superior to time itself. These tasks are nearly impossible and the idea of love one day ending is equated with them.
Through the use of poetic devices such as repetition or alliteration, the author originally describes what love is not capable of providing and defines love as unnecessary but by the end of the poem, the author reveals that love has some value.
Lucas uses a lot of diction in his song. Diction allows Lucas to persuade his audience more. From the song, he says, “And I’ve been suicidal since the day I was nine, shit” (Lucas 62). In this verse, Lucas uses vulgar language to bring out the idea that depression can happen at any age. Also, he sends off a notion of anger. From the song, he says, “I made up my mind…. I’m going out like Robin Williams…. I guess I’m not the Ordinary People of John Legend” (Lucas 60-62). In this verse, the use of simile is important. Robin Williams was a famous star that was loved by many, but sadly took his own life. Also, the simile drawn from John Legend’s song was that people with depression are seen as non-human being. Lucas allows these similes to be made
In the song ‘u’, on the album called ‘To Pimp a Butterfly’, is one of my favorite representations as mentioned earlier. The song starts off by contradicting
John Legend had a big hit in 2013 with “All of me’. I think it is a romantic song, because it helps listeners relax and take their mind of the problem. . An example of this is when he said “give your all to me I will give my all to you,” he has obviously been in love with the person this song is dedicated to which it’s his wife. This statement to me meant that when you truly love someone you don’t share them and you have all of them their mind, soul, body, and attention. The significance of this song to me is that John Legend is trying to show that you can be love with imperfection and flaws. That those things shouldn’t matter when you love someone.. The song is all about being in for the long haul. Wedding vows often speak for better or worse
A big aspect of the average Beatles song, let alone many other artists’ work, is the use of metaphorical language. The writers use metaphorical language to convey their message while also allowing the listener or reader to interpret the song; however they wish to perceive it. In the song “When I’m Sixty-Four”, Paul McCartney is seemingly questioning his significant other’s dedication to him; at least on face value. Fast forward almost 50 years to the release of Kendrick Lamar’s “To Pimp a Butterfly”.
Music is often a form of poetry in modern day. With that, I’m claiming that my chose song has poetic merit. E.T. by Katy Perry is about a love that is unique, and houses figurative language, several types of imagery, and a refrain within the lyrics. My first claim is that it has a variety of figurative language, such as oxymorons and metaphors. An example of this is the lyrics “Infect me with your love and fill me with your poison.”
The first song, Roar, relies heavily on figurative language to deliver its message. The three main types of figurative language the song uses includes Simile, Hyperbole, and Metaphor. The type of figurative language that makes up the largest part of the song is Metaphor. These lines really tell the overall story of this song, which is about someone overcoming the struggles and abuse they have faced in their situation and becoming their own champion and hero. To illustrate, each choir in the song includes the same words;
The first thing a man does is admire the woman he is in love with verbally. While Sir Paul McCartney is talking to the girl he says,”’Michelle, ma belle’”(Doc.1). This quote illustrates that Men first talk about the girl because Michelle, ma belle translates to Michelle, my beautiful. Likewise,
It must be terribly annoying to keep it up constantly.’ Marco frowns, but then, very slowly, his face begins to change. The goatee fades and disappears. The chiseled features become softer and younger. His striking green eyes fade to a green-tinged grey. The false face had been handsome, yes, but consciously so.” (pg. 276)
