How Did George Washington Contribute To The Constitution

No doubt, many highly regarded things that happened in the United States occurred because of Jefferson. First, he helped write the Declaration of Independence in 1776, which is one of the most impactful things he did. The Declaration laid down a foundation of ideals and goals for our nation. This helped us win our freedom from King George III, and provided a good example for other countries who were also struggling with independence. This was an important change to the United States because it allowed colonists to feel entitled to something. Even now, it has had a lasting effect on us. Thomas Jefferson is considered one of the most important people in United States History. He was the third president, and he even drafted the Declaration of Independence. Many think he also had a significant role in drafting the U.S. Constitution as well. This just happens to be incorrect. Jefferson was away in France during the summer of 1787 when this important document was being drafted. He, however, was still slightly involved, but he put the majority of his efforts in the foreign affairs that were going on at the time. Because of his efforts overseas to the United States and the other Ministers, Jefferson had little to do with the Constitution but to give his position on the matter.

George Washington played one of the most important roles in forming the new federal government in 1787, "he became a prime mover in the steps leading to the Constitutional Convention at Philadelphia"(George). George was also one of the delegates at the Constitutional Convention in 1787 and helped create the Constitution. His role in creating the new government helped get him elected as the first President of the United States, which ensured that the Constitution would be followed.

The constitutional convention and the constitution was the start to revolutionizing the way our country would run. In this historic moment there were 55 delegates that put their mark and opinions into the creation of the Constitution of the United States. Although all 55 delegates had a part in the creation some had more of an influence in creating the main frame work of the constitution. One of the most prominent men in the creation was James Wilson, a strong advocate of democracy. Other than James Madison, Wilson’s ideas were greatly acknowledged by the other delegates. He was a strong supporter for the independence of the colonies from British rule and was one of the delegates who did not want to just amend the Articles of Confederation, but make a whole new constitution focusing on other greater principles.

Thomas Jefferson changed America in many drastic ways, especially in terms of the separation of power between the government and the people, the government within itself. It only remained the same regarding the foreign relations policies, which were carried on from the Washington and Adams Presidencies. Under Jefferson’s anti-federalist views, policies were made to reduce the power of the federal government, such as removing internal laws and reducing the size of the army and navy. They were removed because they threatened the people’s “civil liberties” and their control over the government. He “promoted religious freedom, helping to establish the country's separation between church and state, and he advocated free public education, an idea considered radical by his contemporaries” (Millercenter web). He was also a delegate for the Virginia House of Delegates and later became the governor of Virginia for two years (Millercenter web). Jefferson influenced the way people thought about the relationship between the government and the lives of citizens. His beliefs challenged the government’s role established by the Founding Fathers.

From the beginning, we can take note on George Washington's praise towards the country and Government of the Union. He expresses deep gratitude and congratulating the successful progress. As said by Washington, "...the rising credit and respectability of our Country—the general and increasing good will towards the Government of the Union...". He repeated the words of people and peace. Fifty-five delegates were dispatched to Philadelphia Constitutional Convention in 1787. They were initially assembled to amend the Article of Confederation. The convention delegates agreed that the Article of Confederation needed to be set aside and a new Constitution should be drafted. They set about that task with a diverse group of elite members of society. The men at the meeting were from different states, both large and small. Over half of the delegates were college educated. John Adams described the convention delegates as “a gathering of men of ability, weight, and experience.” (Foner 202)

During the American Revolution, he could have set back and supported the British, nonetheless he was the Commander in Chief of the opposing army willing to fight, train, and even have unbelievable patience with basically farmers and other ordinary occupations in accordance during that time he never gave up and lead them to victory. In addition, he also helped create America’s Constitution that he knew would govern the nation for years to come. Most of the framers of the constitution either attended or graduated college, were involved in the American Revolution, and had already been involved in the government. The Constitutional Convention was a meeting held in Philadelphia between May and September of 1787. There, delegates discussed revisions to the United States Government. The Constitutional Convention was held in order to address the problems of the weak central government that existed under the Articles of Confederation. Many of the ideas that were written into the United States Constitution were influenced and based on many important factors. The Enlightenment, colonial grievances listed in the Declaration of Independence, and failures of the Articles of Confederation were major factors and influences of the United States Constitution.

There were so many different ideas that went into making the Constitution of the United States. The Founding Fathers brought so many different forms of government for our new country free from Britain. They wanted to make a government much better than what Britain did, but they wanted a government that would work for centuries after as well.
