History is happening all around us, whether it is affecting us positively or negatively. History is an occurrence of events that have made an impact so big that we emphasize them today. From the Sumerians, to the latest recorded history, we are creating history within. History is happening every day, but it is up to us the retreat back the occurrences of the past life. It is because of history that we function the way we do. For example, through the 15th century, occurrences happened, for example the diversity of people seen throughout the new world. You’ll see that conflict and tension led to experiences with self-government and that the questioning of authority of the church led to diverse religions. Everything that happened in the past has led us to have the history we do today.

Why is history important? It is both necessary and helpful to the study the context of prior history because it reveals who we are in relation to other people, cultures, and countries. History influences the way people can process information viewed from other races, and cultures, and even speak, “The old saying is, if we don’t know where we came from then we don’t know where we are going.” By studying history we can take what others’ have done and build on it.

History can be an intricate and laborious subject to teach and learn. James W. Loewen, author, historian, and sociologist, is the perfect example of someone who appreciates the subject in all aspects, but knows how underestimated it is. As he says in Lies My Teacher Told Me, “Our educational media turn flesh-and-blood individuals into pious, perfect creatures without conflicts, pain, credibility, or human interest” (Loewen 11). Throughout the book, he further elucidated the idea of that quote by introducing particular topics that deserved more details and acknowledgement. Loewen argues with enough reasoning from numerous textbooks that the writers aren’t involving all facts that should be included to inform the students. Nearly all points

Loewen mainly aims this book towards high school students and the school board. He does this to make the biggest impact he can. If a group of high schoolers heard they were being lied too when it came to their history, many would be upset and would want to change the textbooks to be correct. He also directed it at the school boards so they would know that they were wrong and to hopefully replace their false textbooks with correct ones.

History is a subject that can define a person’s heritage. Each one is different, but can have a few similarities. Each person’s history can explain where their family originated, the culture that they are originally from, the struggles that their family encountered, and so much more. But the most important thing that a person’s history can show, is how they ended up where they are today.

For my summer assignment for AP U.S history I had to read the novel, A People’s History of the United States. This novel is a nonfictional literary work that was written by the American historian, playwright, and social activist named Howard Zinn. In this novel, Zinn attempts to present American history through the viewpoint of the common people rather than the conquerors and the economical and political elite. The chapters that I had to read from this book were chapters 1 through 10. The chapters were very informative and it allowed me to revisit major events in American History. Therefore; prior to reading this novel, the three events that stood out to me were the Arawak Indians that encountered Columbus, the enslavement of African Americans
