One important Healthy People 2020 initiative to discuss is the prevention of Sexually Transmitted Infections. The goal set through Healthy People 2020 (2015) is, “To promote healthy sexual behaviors, strengthen community capacity, and increase access to quality services to prevent sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and their complications.” This health care initiative is important through-out the lifespan. It is important when trying to prevent transmission from mother to child and during sexual contact between adolescents, young adults, middle-aged adults, and the elderly. During the pregnancy and birthing process it is important to identify TORCH infections that can be acquired congenitally from mother to offspring. These infections can be transmitted during the birthing process and through breast feeding. It requires important education and prevention measures to help reduce the risk of morbidity and mortality (Stegmann & Carey, 2002). This group …show more content…
Over one million cases of Chlamydia were reported to the CDC in 2013. Despite this large number of reports it actually was a decrease by 1.5% since 2012 (CDC, 2014). Epidemiology statistics showed an increase in reported syphilis, including congenital. Other sexually transmitted diseases can pose higher risks for acquiring HIV. According to new studies, HIV is growing faster in populations that are over 50 versus 40 years and younger (BenRose, 2014). Factors may play a role in this such as higher divorce rates, new medications, and safe sex measures. Therefore, it is important for the healthcare provider screen for sexual activity and any change in sexual partners to provide routine testing when necessary and education on preventive
Wysocki, 2015 estimated that half of all people in the United States will have contracted a sexually transmitted disease in their lifetime. Numerous young women under age 25 haven’t been screened and are asymptotic. Infections impact individuals of all economic levels and backgrounds. Three sexually transmitted diseases are required to be reported by physicians to public health officials. These three are syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia. African American and Latinos have barriers which increase rates of sexually transmitted diseases (Sutton, 2012).
According to University of California (2016), more than 650,000 patients per year in the United States and 2 million patients global are affected by end stage renal disease (ESRD). Number of patient effective by ESRD is increasing every year by 5%. How serious problem it is shows Healthy people 2020. One of the goals of Healthy People 20202 is” reduce new cases of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its complications, disability, death, and economic costs.” According to Healthy People 2020 CKD and ESRD are important public health problems in our country and main cause of suffering and poor quality of life of affected people. They are “responsible for premature death and exact a high economic price from both the private and public sectors.” Both diseases are very expensive to treat. Closely 25% of Medicare budget is
The overall goals of Healthy People 2020 are to achieve health equity, eliminate disparities, and improve the health of all groups (Lancaster & Stanhope, 2016). Rev. Dr. Granger Westberg coined the term “parish nurse” in the early 1980’s as he collaborated to establish healing ministries among healthcare professionals (Brehm & Cruz, 2007). Objectives that are amenable to parish nursing within Healthy People 2020 are that a patient’s physical, mental, quality of life, well-being/satisfaction and participation in everyday activities are addressed which addresses a patients needs in a holistic approach. Parish nurses provide encouragement, support, and information to motivate and facilitate clients as they seek to utilize health services which
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) continue to compromise the health of thousands of Americans daily, predominantly adolescents. According to the World Health Organization (2013), approximately one million Americans acquire an STD every day. Although the percentage of adolescents who have had sexual intercourse has declined since the 1990’s, those who have had sex are less likely to use any form of contraception, thus placing them at greater risk of acquiring an STD (Department of Health and Human Services [DHHS], 2015). Of the many STDs that are prevalent in the United States, chlamydia is one of the most commonly reported STDs (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2011). Undiagnosed or untreated chlamydia can cause many health problems including cervicitis, urethritis, and can advance to severe health issues such as pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and ectopic pregnancy (CDC, 2011).
Healthy People 2020 (HP) has set a goal to “promote respiratory health through better prevention, detection, treatment, and education efforts.” One focus is to reduce asthma deaths among children and adults under age 35 years (Healthy People 2000, 2017). HP also recognizes that asthma has many components that can be classified as either genetic or environmental. They are working to both to improve the quality of life for those who suffer from asthma as to reduce the strain ill place on societal recourses. Assessing living situations for environmental triggers is one evidence based practice that can be initialized and then to make modifications that immediately impact the health of an asthma sufferer. Secondly, making sure medical supervision
STDs place a significant economic strain on the U.S. healthcare system. According to CDC conservatively estimates, the lifetime cost of treating eight of the most common STDs contracted in just one year is $15.6 billion (2013). Each year, more than “$1 billion in direct and indirect costs are expended on Chlamydia infections in the United States. Many of these costs result from the management of women with PID and its complications” (Thompson, n.d.). Further growth in the economic burden of chlamydial infections will occur as these infections become more prevalent. Although chlamydia screening is expanding, many women who are at risk are still not being tested, thus,
The four primary goals of the Department of Health and Human Services in launching the Healthy People 2020 health program includes (1) attaining high-quality and long-life free from diseases, morbidity, injury and early death. (2) Another is to achieve health equality, reduction of disparities and improve overall health conditions of different age group. (3-4) it is also their goal to promote a social and physical environment for good health, wellness, development and healthy behaviors across the life cycle (CDC, 2015).
The World Health Organization defines sexually transmitted infections (STIs) as infections that are mainly passed through person to person sexual contact (World Health Organization [WHO], 2012). Some of the more common infections include syphilis, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and genital herpes (World Health Organization [WHO], 2012). Every year about 19 million new STI cases are reported by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) (Centers for Disease Control [CDC], 2011). Such high incidence rates cause the U.S health care system 17 billion dollars a year (Centers for Disease Control [CDC], 2011). Beyond having increased costs STIs also have a huge social impact on society.
The goal of Healthy People 2020 is to improve health, fitness, and quality of life through daily physical activity. Many campaigns have been conducted by many organization like Michelle Obama in the “Let’s Move” campaign to help against child obesity. “The Let’s Move campaign will combat the epidemic of childhood obesity through a comprehensive approach that builds on effective strategies, and mobilizes public and private sector resources” (Meyer, 2010). Despite the effort to increase physical activities among the youth, only a few people who find the incentive to participate in such campaign. Recent technology has allowed us to monitor how much we move, how many calories we burned and what is our heart rate via a smart watch. In disease prevention
There are about 19 million new cases of Sexually Transmitted Infections in the United States each year. There are more than 700, 000 cases of gonorrhea each year and incidents of chlamydia have steadily increased within the past two decades. STI’s are on the rise among the young adults in the United States and evidence suggests that young adults are most at risk due to an increase in sexual activities. Chlamydia and gonorrhea are the most common “curable” diseases reported in the US. These widespread incidents have made STI’s an epidemic in the United States.
One of the goal Healthy People 2020 is about the nutrition and weight status. The main goal of the program is to promote health and reduce the chronic disease risk through consumption of healthful diets and achievements and maintenance of healthy body weights. (Healthy people 2020)
The theoretical base for my research project will be Healthy People 2020. The reason why I chosen Healthy People 2020 is because it can provide measurable objectives. For instance, since my topic is on exposure to gun violence among youth in an urban setting I believe two of the Healthy People 2020 measurable objectives will be beneficial. Furthermore, I will use injury and violence prevention and mental health and mental disorders objective topic areas to support my research question.
As reportable STD’s increase globally, few may recognize the fact that 15-24 year-olds represent 25% of the sexually experienced population (Weinstock, Berman, Cates, 2004). Along with that, according to a 2009 study reported over one third of the sexually active adolescents admitted they did not use a condom during their last sexual intercourse experience (Eisenberg, Bernat, Bearinger, Resnick, 2009). Approximately 9.1 million STD cases of the 18.9 million that occurred were among teens aged 15-24. The 9.1 million reported diseases among adolescents constitutes 48% of the STD problem as a whole, in that case it has become important to the population (Weinstock, Berman, Cates, 2004). The fact that adolescents seem to be a playing a major role
In the United States, there has been a rapid increase of sexually transmitted diseases and unplanned pregnancies among teens. Teens account for nearly half of 20 million new cases of STDs each year (“Adolescent Development and STDs”). In a study done by Naomi Adjei she discovered these results, “In 2013, 27% of RI high school students reported being sexually active, 32% did not use a condom, 10% used no method of contraception during their last sexual intercourse, and 8% reported multiple sexual partners.9 Additionally, 17.5% of the
Young adults easily make an assumption that getting a sexually transmitted disease will never happen to them. Except they are wrong, in most cases these infections do not discriminate against race, gender, or age. Unfortunately anyone who has had a STD is at greater risk for acquiring one again. Sexually transmitted diseases are infections that can be transferred from one person to another through any type of sexual contact. The current state of this issue is estimated every year having over twenty million new cases of sexually transmitted diseases such as chlamydia and gonorrhea. Sexually transmitted diseases affects society and becomes a burden for the public health systems throughout the world. The reason why sexually transmitted disease is the topic I’m interesting in talking about is because adolescents and young adults, age’s fifth teen through twenty-four are the most at risk for obtaining an STD. This is an issue that needs to be addressed more in the public’s eyes and made an upmost priority. Personally this topic bothers me knowing college students are at high risk and if not taking into serious measures these infections can lead to further lifelong diseases or illnesses such as HIV. Healthy People 2020 strives to improve overall health nationwide through increasing public awareness while understanding the determinants of health, disease, and disability. Following under the Healthy People 2020 overall goal; sexually
