American Football is a huge spectator sport where offensive and defensive players will use teamwork and perseverance to try and score more points than their opponent. Football is highly respected in America, where boys will try and pursue the dream of playing in the NFL (National Football Association) someday; but if you look at an average neighborhood, you will find that kids and adults of all ages love to go out and throw around the pigskin. (Lerner and Lerner 275). One thing Americans will take pride in is the college and NFL football teams they root for. People sit down with a beer and talk hours upon hours of football and two individuals can get in a heated discussion in the local sports store of whose sports team is better. …show more content…
Blankets are put down at 4 p.m. to reserve a seat. Streets become deserted and restaurants empty just before 7:30 p.m. kickoffs” (B. 12). While football is one of the most loved sports; it is also one of the more dangerous. Many football players will endure bone fractures, ankle sprains, and knee injuries, which are very common; but the injury high school football seems to attract the most is head injuries.Head injuries can have a lasting effect on high school players and tend to be very common. Some people consider the players at fault, while others will blame the helmet manufacturing, coaches, or even the parents. High school players are almost always overlooked and many problems can arise. Therefore coaches, players and parents need to take more responsibility and see that there are solutions to prevent concussions and eliminate such a common problem among high school players. Football helmets are very important pieces of equipment and have been revolutionized since football started. According to Forthofer, when football was a new sport in the 1860s to 1896, helmets were not used. The first helmets that were used were made of mole skin or leather and were very uncomfortable and hot (Forthofer). Croswell writes that shortly after helmets became mandatory in 1939, college students began to paint pictures and used colors that represented their school so that the quarterback would not get confused as to who is on his team. Right around the 1950s, players
Helmets keep a players head safe during a game. Most NFL players still wear helmets that were made in the nineteen-nineties (Halstead). DeSean Jackson now has an anti-concussion football helmet (Chase). If helmet companies manufactured more anti-concussion helmets, players would be better off and the rule would definitely not need to be in play. Also, according to Halstead, in two thousand-thirteen, players will finally have price breaks from helmet companies to be able to buy newer safe helmets (Halstead). If players buy more anti-concussion helmets, they would not get injured as easy nor would the helmet-to-helmet hit rule need to take
On November 6th, 1869 the young American sport called football was born. In 1903, the addition of the football helmet was introduced; however, the helmet was not mandatory for all players until 1943 (“History of the”). Since the mandatory protocol for the use of helmets, the football helmet has advanced in safety. The helmet evolved from a plastic shell-shaped helmet to a more protective rounded plastic helmet with a face mask and chin strap. After those improvements, the modifications for safety increased. Today, professional football players have impact indicators on their chin straps to identify head injuries. As players have gotten bigger and stronger, head injury awareness is a major part of player’s safety and if they are not aware, it often results in a concussion. Many players and viewers of the game do not know how concussions occur, what the effects are, and how engineers and associations try to prevent the occurrence.
"You get a concussion, they've got to take you out of the game. So if you can hide it and conceal it as much as possible, you pay for it the next day, but you'll be able to… stay in the game." Washington Redskins fullback Mike Sellers. 76 of 79 brains of former deceased NFL athletes by scientists have shown signs of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE (Sappenfield, 2015) which is believed to be caused by the innumerable amount of hits taken to the head through the duration of their short careers. Throughout the years, concussions have become a massive issue, especially for the NFL and its athletes as former NFL athletes are now developing brain diseases like CTE due to the repeated head trauma received over their short careers which is
According to the department of Orthopedic Surgery, at Wayne State University, “Youth football programs across the United States represent an at-risk population of approximately 3.5 million athletes for sports related concussions” (Buzas 1). Despite these risks, it is easy for some parents get involved in the game and overlook the danger that their children are in. There are parents who do not realize the severity of effects a concussion can have, as there are parents who do not know exactly what a concussion is. In order to recognize how severe the effects of concussions are, the individual must first understand what a concussion is. According to Medicine.Net, a concussion is, “a traumatic injury to soft tissue, usually the brain, as a result of a violent blow, shaking, or spinning. A brain concussion can cause immediate but usually temporary impairment of brain functions, such as thinking, vision, equilibrium, and consciousness” (Medicine.Net). Concussions can increase in effect or cause permanent damage if not taken care of properly. Learning how to properly deal with concussions is essential for all ages; it is more crucial for youth football players because younger children are more susceptible to long-term risks from head injuries (Buzas 1).
Most sports-related head injuries, such as concussions which is temporarily interference with the way the brain works are mild and allow for complete recovery. However, concussion in children can pose serious health. Therefore, as an MA I would explain a pediatric patient with a potential concussion during their visit, if there is any activity they could perform or not, and how long it will take time to heal their concussion. In addition, as the MA I will explain the risk concussion, and it symptoms.
For decades, football has been one of the most admired sports in America but also considered one of the most harmful. The injuries in football can vary from shin splints, fractured wrists and to torn ACLs but the injury that causes the most damage are concussions. It is not unheard of for football players to have concussions but it is surprising how unaware they are about the long-term effects. The coaches are not any better because they are telling the players to shake off the injury and then encouraging them to get back in the game. For too long football programs have been downplaying concussions, while they have denied it for too long, the new interest and attention in concussions has the potential to improve athletes’ safety.
“The hard hits of football lead not only to sprains, broken bones and other physical injuries, but concussions as well. This brain injury has become a major concern for football players of all ages, and among young players, the problem appears to be getting worse. Between 1997 and 2007, the number of emergency department visits for concussions doubled between 8 and 13 year olds and tripled for older youth, according to the Southwest Athletic Trainers' Association. While part of the spike is likely due to increased surveillance and awareness, it still outlines a major problem in youth sports, says Lori Cook, director of the Pediatric Brain Injury Programs at the University of Texas–Dallas Center for BrainHealth. “Head injury is an obvious risk of kids playing football,” she says.
There has been extraordinary improvements of helmets from the old leather to the modernized-plastic football helmets along with the face mask and energy- absorbent padding. In addition, the concern over preventing concussions, have led to helmet changes, impact testing methods and reconstruction of injuries during play helping to provide insight on concussions(4). Helmets have been successful in decreasing the risk of traumatic brain injuries, but there is much concern over concussion; therefore, scholars argue the importance of technology development to address concussion(5). As the author(s), David Viano and David Halstead discusses, there is room needed for understanding the types of collisions associated in youths and the impact condition addressing collisions. There are many variables to consider addressing concussion and where they occur.
This article focuses on the severity of contact sport related injuries, more specifically head injuries and concussions. This has been a hot top throughout many different professional organizations and it is often discussed how each organization should handle these types of injuries. More recently they have began to administer tests before each season so that when a head related injury occurs, team doctors can more easily determine whether or not the athlete should return to the field and when the appropriate time to do so is. Since the repercussions of allowing an athlete to return to quickly to play can leave long-term consequences, professional, college, and even high school teams have begun to take these injuries more seriously by administering these tests.
The sport of football is arguably one of the most popular sports in the country. The National Football League makes around Nine Billion dollars every season (Isidore). Tickets to each game cost around one hundred dollars per person. However, ticket prices are not the only price when it comes to the sport. Players risk serious injury when competing. Some minor injuries include bruises, scrapes, and burns. More serious injuries consist of muscle pulls, strains, and broken bones. However, one of the most severe and problematic injuries that can occur, happens in the head. It is known as the concussion. Minor and major head injuries, such as the concussion, can lead to problems in a person’s future life, such as depression, Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy,
There are many dilemmas that plague sports. Some of those can range from bribing, cheating, racism, and sports safety. In the past the NBA had to deal with the betting scandal involving Tim Donaghy and baseball has had to deal with the issue of performance enhancers. The sports industry generates around half a trillion dollars a year and it has to deal with multiple dilemmas at the youth, college, and professional level. A growing issue with sports has been the number of injuries that athletes have had to deal with. Typical sports injuries range from twisting ankles, blowing out knees, and dislocating shoulders. Surgery and rehabilitation have helped athletes to recover and get them back on the playing field faster
Brain trauma, researchers say, is widespread among high school football players. Is the game becoming too dangerous? Click here learn more: http://fxn.ws/1K4uUuf
I agree with the statement. At first, football helmets were created to prevent skull fractures and broken necks. But, they were never to protect the brain from major injuries due to the constant repetition of blows to the head . It can cause serious damage like concussions, traumatic brain injury, memory loss, and even death. Nevertheless, you can play a whole game and not get a blow to the head. However, the damage occurs internally and begins to reflect the over the passage of time. Some side effects might include depression, dementia, and other limitations. And this is a real issue that professional need to do something about it to protect and keep healthy players. And not letting their dreams ruin their lives.
It is a dependable fact that each time a competitor is getting into their gear and strolling onto the football field, he is putting his body in danger of genuine damage, yet how frequently are these injuries; particularly head trauma, occurring on the football field. As per The American Journal of Sports Medicine it is said that four out of each 1,000 High School Football injuries brought about damage to the head. This examination was taking during
U.S. high schools with at least one certified athletic trainer on staff found that concussions accounted for nearly 15% of all sports-related injuries. Football has long been known as a physically demanding sport, and stories about football players getting concussions flood the media everyday. Some people believe that playing football is not worth the risk that it is associated with, while others believe that football is a vital part of youth sports that has many advantages. There are multiple reasons for letting kids play football. Parents who let their kids play football; realize that the attributes they retain from football will last with them for the rest of their life. Football will continue benefiting them when the season is over. Players are taught not to hit head to head and are taught the proper formed tackle. Concussions are not as dangerous because athletic trainers diagnose and help the players immediately. The only reason that parents do not want their children to play is because there is a miniscule chance of injury. Everyone is scared of football because NFL players are complaining, and talking about how concussions have negatively affected them. People were not aware of concussions until recently. Concussions are the main reason, parents do not want their kids playing football. Due to the advantages that playing football as a youth has, such as teaching children and adolescents to set and achieve goals, promoting physical fitness, and fostering a hard work
