Hawaii Memoir

White foam spreads across a carpet of clear blue. The carpet rises, and the foam curves off the back and crashes to the ground. It travels back across a desert of sand and repeats its actions. The morning sun meets the surface, bouncing off and chasing the reflection of the birds flying. Screams of excitement run past me, their bodies wading into the deep blue. Fiberglass skimming across the top, breaking the perfect surface. There was no looking back now. My heart jumps as i follow closely behind. My arms moving fast, diving deep into the warm liquid. Eager to get to the Hawaiian Dives. We start to slow, the sharp, brown rock, marks the bottoms of my feet as i run across. My hands grip onto the rock as i throw my body up to stand. You could see everything from up there.

As part of my networking, there are some high school classmates who I am in constant contact with. We all went to college and have our own careers in different fields. One of these friends allowed me to live with her for my first year out of college. Four of us played volleyball together. Last week I arrived at Hawaii or the Sandwich Islands and when I got there, all the native Hawaiians had poorly choice of clothes since it showed a lot of their skin. Since we were sailing for over 4 months, they were incredibly kind and nice to share how they live with some of my friends and me. My hair has grown down to my rib cage since the last time, I saw you my hair was only down to my shoulders. I have lost 21 pounds by just carrying heavy boxes and a printer and everything else off of the ship and eating scarcely. My bones were aching yesterday so, I asked the Hawaiians if they have any medicine. Unfortunately they didn’t, but the good thing was that the nurse we brought from the ship was in the next house and she had some. My friends

“I’m sorry Mommy, I promise I won’t do it again. Please forgive me.” this was all I could say. I had no excuse for my actions.

Maui, Hawaii, is a beautiful island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, it’s an amazing vacation spot. Most families come to Maui for its island zipline, snorkeling with the sea turtles and riding horses through the island. A lot of people get married on Maui and stay there for there for their honeymoon.

I’ll will go to Hawaii because it’s an interesting place to be at for example Hawaii is the widest state in the United States and has its own time zone it’s the Hawaiian Standard Time also there no day light saving time. The time runs two hours behind Pacific Standard Time and five hours behind Eastern Standard Time. Hawaii is also the one US state that has a royal palace, is completely surrounded by water, does not have a straight line in its state boundary and has been continuously growing in area. The name Hawaii comes from hawaiki meaning place of the gods. The state of Hawaii is made up of 8 main islands. The biggest being Hawaii, most commonly called The Big Island. The others are Maui, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Oahu, Niihau, and Kahoolawe.

As you know I am traveling to Hawaii tomorrow,so I can go see my Aunt Lindsay. I can’t wait too see my new born baby cousin Brooks,and of course my cousin Davis.My Aunt told me that we are going too go visit the National Park in Hawaii.It’s name is “Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.” Before I go I want to research a little bit about the place,so I will write to you either on the Airplane or when I get to my destination.Good night.

I’ve lived in Hawaii my whole life, and it would be pretty unusual if I haven’t experienced any speech to text problems with my computer or smartphone. Many people recognize Hawaii as a melting pot between Asian, American, and Hawaiian cultures. This creates a large number of different language speakers and words. As Emma mentioned, many of street names in Hawaii are Hawaiian or Japanese names and thus, make it hard for devices to recognize their names. My own home address is no exception. The name of my street is Kuaie St, but when I try speaking to Siri to see if she recognizes the name, she comes up with some bizarre street name that isn’t even in Hawaii. “Shawn have you ever heard of Hawaii?”, my father asked while we sat down for dinner. At that moment I already knew what was about to happen. My parents had been “joking around” recently about moving but I could tell that the jokes were progressively getting more and more serious, and this scared me. “No” I replied trying to avoid the subject. “Well it’s an amazing place, and your dad just scored a job transfer there and me and him are pretty set on it now.” I was distraught, I didn’t even want to think about leaving all of my friends and family that lived in texas.

My family, its culture, and religion have all had a major impact and have shaped me to be the person I am today. My parents and grandparents are from Guyana, South America and my great-grandparents are from India, which makes me and my siblings, first generation Americans. Having a taste of both the East and West Indian community has influenced my religion (Hinduism), my moral ethics and values, culture, traditions, and decisions. My individuality has stood out from the majority of my classmates throughout the school because I am the only person who has my background. My heritage and culture has re-enforced my ability to have different perspectives on the world. Even though, my birth and upbringing has been in the United States. Although, I have an East and West Indian descent, I have family members in many other areas of the world. I have also traveled many places across the United States and Canada. For example, driving across the country to the Mid-West as truely shown different eye opening perspectives. It was an early morning in antioch california where I was vast asleep at my grandma’s house. Until my father suddenly woke me up and said “we have to go” and that's how it all started. So I got up and got dressed, ate little bit of cereal and hopped outside with my bags. “Oh my god” I said as loud as I could without waking anyone up around us. There it was A LIMO FOR ME I almost fainted until grandma said “this is just the beginning. We got in the limo and started our adventure. About a 2 hour nap later we arrived at the SFO airport around 8am. I got my bags and said goodbye to our amazing driver, then walked right through those electric airport doors with the biggest smile ever.

I didn’t think I would ever have the opportunity to go somewhere so beautiful and magical as Hawaii. The waterfalls surrounded by the thick canopy of trees were so calming and amazing.

How is everyone doing and did anything change? Hawaii has very warm consistent weather, but I miss our home cooked meals and the different types of weather. Especially the springtime when the whole family would sit under the cherry blossom tree and gaze at the beautiful pink leaves as they would fall. 10 years ago, when I first arrived for my marriage, I thought the pay would be wonderful because there were so many rumors around the neighborhood and everyone was talking about it. I was excited that life would be like paradise and that is why I thought it would be completely fine to sign the contract that I didn’t even understand, to work here, but we were completely wrong.

One morning Lily woke me up and squeezed me and I felt a little bit of a tingle. I saw a bright light shining in my face as bright as the luner eclipse, for a second, because we weren't in Chicago anymore. We were in Hawaii, and trust me I don't want to leave, but I wonder how we got these powers.

If you are reading this, I am currently coming back home. We landed in one of the Island in Hawaii and we think we are in the Island of Oahu. The sky is clear with the warm sun shining through the tropical trees. People there did not wear proper clothes. We were all sick and most of our crew perished before we got here. The ship had to get repaired and needed to restore resources so we decided to stay on the Islands for a couple days before we head back to London.
