After the pilot's heart attack and death, it was quite an adventure and must have been difficult for sixteen year old Brian. He was the only survivor of the plane crash, with a hatchet as his only tool. To survive on his own, Brian had to use what he had available. He used the hatchet, given to him by his mom before he left home, to make tools such as a bow and arrow and to help him start a fire. Over the fifty-four days he was stuck in the woods, he learned through trial and error, tried to stay positive, and used his knowledge and skills and the limited tools he had available to him to survive his adventure until he was rescued.
The book Black Hearts is written by Jim Frederick and tells the story of all the controversial accounts one infantry unit ran into while on deployment in Baghdad, Iraq. The book is a documentation, captured accounts and events written down to tell the crazy story these soldiers went through. The specific unit Frederick writes about and what Black Hearts is about is 2nd brigade of the 101st airborne infantry division. “Black Hearts” was the unofficial insignia of 2nd brigade. Frederick covers one platoon in particularly and their ethical dilemmas they encounter while on deployment. 1st platoon, Bravo Company, 1-502nd Regiment is the unit the book covers. Many things on deployment unfold poorly for this platoon such as having little
In the book Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies, by Seth Holmes he mentioned the philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre and his philosophy “Bad Faith”. Holmes explains “The phrase “bad faith” was introduced by Jean-Paul Sartre to describe the ways in which individuals knowingly deceive themselves to avoid acknowledging realities disturbing to them(Holmes86). The phrase explains us, when something bad is happening in our lives, we lie to ourselves to escape the truth that we don’t have to face them. This happens to everyone when we commit a really bad mistake and we don’t want to accept it. Another way this may happen is when you’re in a bad situation and you try to replace it with something else to get your mind off of it. Basically it’s a distraction, so we don’t think about what’s actually going on.
When thinking of Mexican American immigrants what comes to mind? The American public consistently listens to the media telling stories of how these people cross the border illegally, which is deemed as a crime. Immigrants are portrayed just as stealing American jobs and benefiting from government programs such as welfare. Countless people think it was a voluntary action for them to come to the United State, therefore whatever comes their way is what they deserve regardless if it is health problems, racism or low paying jobs. However, what most of American people don’t realize is that the majority of Mexican migrants are forced to migrate to the United State in order to survive. They constantly risk their lives to cross a dangerous border in order to find the jobs that the American people don’t want to endure. In the book called “Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies”, the author, Seth Holmes focuses on the lives of an indigenous Mexican group called the Triquis. Throughout the book, he focuses on the journey of the group from their hometown of Oaxaca to farms in California and Washington. The book also emphasizes how racism and health problems of migrant workers have become invisible to the American people. It is commonly seen that their personal damage such as health problems and placement on the social hierarchy system is only to be blamed on their sole decision to come to a country where they are considered illegal. Instead of blaming the Triqui people for their sickness,
In the novel Hatchet by gary paulsen,A boy named Brian gets stranded in a forest and having, no food he reacts to some things a little different it states in the text “But when he brought a cupped hand to his mouth and felt the cold water trickle past his cracked lips and over his tongue he could not stop. He had never not even on his long bike trips in the hot summer, been this thirsty. It was as if the water was more than water, as if the water had become all life, and he could not stop. He stooped and put his mouth to the lake drank and drank, pulling it deep and swallowing great gulps of it. He drank until his stomach was swollen, until he nearly fell of the log with it, then he rose and stagger-tripped his way back to the bank.” This

In his book Collapse, Jared Diamond gives you an in depth look at societies you may or may not be familiar with and shows you the secrets to their success or failure using his personal 5-point framework. I enjoyed this book and thought he made a lot of good points and had convincing evidence to back it up. While reading you could really tell he knew a lot about the areas he discussed because of the depth he went into with details and descriptions. One complaint I would have about the book is the length he went to in the detailed descriptions, at some points I felt he went too far and got a little wordy and with as much as he gave you are left with almost no questions or curiosity. There were a few terms he uses in the book like

Have you ever gave up on your dreams? If yes, that's not the case here. These two texts “Marble Champ” and “Hatchet” are all about not giving up and staying strong. Many people give up when things get too hard, unlike Lupe and Brian, they fought until the end. They never gave up when things got complicated. Both protagonists in the two stories,Lupe and Brian, are in situations where they have to keep trying and never give up. Some people think it’s easy to keep trying and to stay strong but for other people it’s not just some fairytale. To them it’s probably very tough and difficult. “Marble Champ” by Gary Soto and “Hatchet” by Gary Paulsen are comparative and contrasting and I’m here to explain it to you!
All people possess the ability to do acts of varying evil or good. Firstly, the most basic of denials to this notion is the idea that a person can only be good or bad. That somehow an incredibly complex creature such as a human can have a polarized personality is impossible. For example, Saddam Hussein carried out the genocide of many innocents in the Kurdish regions, but was a proponent of education, going as far as to start a literacy program that hoped to raise literacy to 100% in the population. Also, Ted Bundy was an awful serial killer who committed many terrible crimes but he also worked on a suicide hotline. Using his dashing, manipulative personality, the same that charmed his many victims, he convinced many to continue living. Therefore,
