The importance of academic qualifications, which was always debatable, but now has become more controversial. The substantial influence of a degree has sparked the controversy over the potential impact on students to pay full-cost of their course. It can be agreed that a qualified person does have an opportunity to earn high salary. This essay will elaborate how hard work helps individuals to earn more and how demand of work pay higher rate and thus leads to a logical conclusion. At the outset there are numerous reason how a qualified person earns more, but the most conspicuous lies from the fact that it solely depends on individual characteristics to earn higher salary. As an illustration, a person having great interpersonal skills and communication
In today’s world, young people think that if they continue their tertiary education, they can access a better job, no matter which subject they take. This situation indirectly causes a huge enrollment of students into universities and colleges, which may drop off the quality of education. As the author says, “quantity trumps quality” (pg. 168) which certify that the environment is skipped from education to jobs; meanwhile, the knowledge part is ignored by the students. In detail, they do not expect to learn something but just to get a degree which acts as “a passport to consideration for a job”. (pg. 164) This condition gradually turns credentialing into the norm. Everyone only cares about the degree that they will receive rather than concerning about what they will learn and develop through their subject’s material.
In recent discussions of “Is College Worth It?” By John Green, a controversial issue has been whether, people should attend college or get a job after they finish high school. On the one hand, some argue that people can get a monthly income better than if they have a degree. From this perspective, some people they do not want to attend college. On the other hand, however, others insist that people should attend college after they finish high school. In the words of John Green, one of this view’s proponents, “after graduating from college, I actually made $1 per hour less when I started working as an assistant at Booklist Magazine, but the job was better in every way” (video). According to this view, he was working at Stake and Shake and he was getting better salary than what he got after graduate by 1$ less but money is not everything in life. Then he proved to the audiences through his experience that he was more comfortable with working as assistant at Booklist Magazine even he is making less money. Because he got a better job, got the knowledge, and work on something that he like. In sum, then, the issue is whether to attend college or work without a degree. My own view is that attending college is worth it even if it will cost some sacrifices of things that we can get it in the future. After, all, I have chosen to identify as a college student at Winona State University. Though I concede that choosing the university and working to
Although college tuition is a lot nowadays, graduates are “far less likely to be unemployed than non-graduates.” (D) A college degree gives you a higher chance of getting a job to assist in securing the future of you and your family while also helping paying off your financial obligations. A college degree not only helps you obtain a job, but it also increase your income. “Construction workers, police officers… make significantly more with a degree…“(D)
The author’s goal is to motivate the students for higher education and this claim brings out a noticeable point that a blue collar job, which can be obtained without higher education also, is physically taxing. I agree with the author’s key point and its evidence as it supports and complements each other in explaining the author’s ultimate goal of bringing this to student’s attention that they should be seeking higher education in life and not settling for a blue collar job.
Many people are confused on why to invest time and money of attending college. A reason for obtaining a higher education is that a college degree can possibly earn a much higher salary than the majority of the people who have a high school diploma. College can be expensive and time consuming for the most of the people that do not have enough money and spare time to go to college. Stephen Rose, a research professor at the Georgetown University, wrote an article on “The Value of a College Degree” to explain if a college degree can be valuable to people to have. Eleni Karageorge, an author on the United States Department of Labor, wrote an article “Is A College Degree Still Worth It?” to give some details on job occupations that compares with employees having a bachelor’s degree or a high school diploma on how much they annually make on their job. Finally, Paul E. Barton, a consultant and a writer for topics related on education, wrote an article “How Many College Graduates Does the U.S. Labor Force Really Need?” on giving details on how valuable to have a college degree in the near future are needed when certain occupations are on high demand with a requirement on having a least a bachelor’s degree. We need to know why going to college is so important for anyone who wants to have professional occupations.
In his essay titled “Yes A College Education Is Worth the Costs,” published in USA Today, former president of Southern Virginia University and a law professor at Thomas Jefferson School of Law Rodney K. Smith, raises his concern about people willing to invest in material things rather than their future. By using the Bureau of Labor Statistics on the unemployed population to show that the unemployment rate is caused by the absences of graduates to satisfy the jobs in demand, he tries to convince the reader of the importance of education. As a 2010 report by the BLS indicates compared to 14.9% unemployed people without a high school diploma, only 1.9% graduates with a doctoral degree are unemployed. In addition, the average weekly income of a high school degree holder is 1106 less than a doctoral degree holder (qtd in Smith).
Apart from the idea that college degree does not decide the path of life, the author asserts that it is still worth people’s time. According to the author’s data, most people who do not own a college degree perform worse in careers
On the other side, the economy of Texas and Florida lost 33,000 jobs in September 2017, unemployment rates also dropped down to 4.2%. Unemployment situation is increasing seriously in America. Finding a job is so hard, and recruitment company always required their employees who have bachelor or master degree, they also compete each other for getting a job. The State Higher Education Executive Officers Association reported a high school degree earned a median average of $300,000 per year; nevertheless, bachelor’s degrees and advanced degrees earned from $50,000 to $70,000 a year. Therefore, if we don’t have a good education, our dream will be compromised. Furthermore, preparing a good education is the best investment because it helps us live out American Dream that is called a success and finance. America is developed country so education is a necessary factor for growing economies. Otherwise, a good education is known as our honor and outward appearance that give us more confident to contact with many people. Evidently, person isn’t complete perfect if they don’t have education because it is not only a key to success but also a door to open our
A college education is necessary to get a job that pays well, or to get any good job. Any, and every job that is ‘worth’ having requires some type of higher education, whether it relates to the job or to show general experience, a degree is required. “This calls for greater access to a college or university
Throughout the world, social classes tend to separate people into groups. Everything depends on a person’s experience with wealth and power. Therefore, the levels of education determine the value of a person. In the articles, “Blue-Collar Brilliance” and “Why Colleges Shower Their Students with A’s” by Rose and Staples, they go in depth about how education and wealth plays a significant role in today’s society.
It is unmistakable that his position as temp in the car factories is extremely hard, as well as labor intensive, and yet at the end, he is paid very little. The “tinged with sense of guilt” is a highly valuable lesson to Braaksma since he realized that he did not take the most beneficial opportunity that he has had in order to accomplish higher education (Braaksma, 2005 p.1). From this statement, it is apparent that life can be much more hard without an outstanding college degree, though he has not acquired it yet, and he did not work hard at school. This hence makes him to feel a little guilty at the moment. In addition, he compares his tough duties at the assembly line with other jobs his friends took, such as waiting tables around the campus. Braaksma however, carries out his rough obligations at the factory in order to save his small wages in order for his return to college. He really pities for his colleagues at the workplace who have worked there for a longer period because they have not had the privilege like his to attend college, and thus makes him feel more grateful (Braaksma, 2005). With the thought of working and not returning to school is one not to be taken lightly. Many people often think, is it worth going to school to begin with. In the article “Is College Worth It? Clearly Data Say”, says “Americans with four-year college degrees made 98 percent more an hour on average in 2013 than people without a degree. That’s up from 89 percent five years earlier, 85 percent a decade earlier and 64 percent in the early 1980s.”
Education teaches one everything such as better knowledge, what is right and what is wrong and gives one the opportunity to learn new stuff. When students start going to school, they start learning basic studies and then at the college level, they are ready for a job. College is the last stage in students’ life where they get ready for a job or career. Bird suggests right, college education should enhance student’s chances for a good job because after many students get a degree in whichever field they like; however, they sometimes don’t get a good job or get a low paying job. “Other field most popular with college graduate are also pathetically small (Bird 128).”
Ultimately the most crucial factor in one’s decision to go to receive a higher education should not be money based, but whether they are pursuing a career field that they at least enjoy if not love. Although it may be true for some that a higher education
The main goal is to show readers that Braaksma’s points are valid. However, due to larger cultural and social issues, that point fails to resonate with the majority of people. Therefore, the overall goal becomes a two for one approach, hone Braaksma’s original argument to make it more assertive while illustrating to readers the direct reason why they might fail to relate. The goal of Lessons was to get people to see the advantages they have in attaining a degree versus what life could be like without one, all the while having people understand the struggles of the average blue-collar worker. The critical essay will ask readers to look at how blue-collar work is negatively stigmatized in modern society, and how such a mentality breeds separation. This separation creates a divide that makes it difficult for people to meet on common ground. This disparity is why essays such as Lessons have a hard time impacting its target audience.
In the competitive world today, having a college degree might not benefit a student as much as before, thus opening up numerous questions concerning its necessity. Not only is the number of students desperately trying to enroll in college increasing, but the tuition shoots up as well. However, will college enrollment necessarily be enough to increase your chances of attaining job security? The answer is hotly debated amongst adults and students alike, which opens up the second option for students, that is, joining the work force. Although this option is generally shunned by the new generation, the tough economy and slow restoration makes it quite a desirable choice at the moment. Joining the work force is a hard decision to make as it
