My artifact is of a commercial that supposedly was going to be shown during the Super Bowl bringing up the issue of drug overdose amongst teens and relating it to firearms by giving a statistic at the end that teenagers are more likely to die of overdose than they are in gun fire. As someone who is interested in firearm violence and the issues of teen suicide or overdosed this was an interesting subject for me to look into. The message the Ad is communicating is that teens are more likely to die from overdose than gun fire. To portray this a series of tools are used. Besides the obvious statistic at the end. In order to make the statistic really hit home with the viewer the creators of the ad use different types of rhetoric to draw the viewer in. They focused on establishing credibility, appealing to reason, evoking an emotional response, and delivering the ad at a time of relevance. Let's look further into these literary devices they used. Looking at establishing credibility, when someone thinks of gun ownership there are many images of who the person might be like. A very common persona is that of a southern country guy which we see …show more content…
The media gladly celebrities people who commit mass shootings and it seems we here about them every day. Despite the fact that gun crime is actually decreasing and owning a firearm is technically one of the safests products you can buy due to there being about 1 per person in the United States and only a tiny fraction of a percent of them are used in crimes. When we hear about all these shootings though we also start to overlook other things that have high death tools, such as drinking and driving, mal medial practice, or even overdose. People think gun violence is through the roof but people are losing sight that there are many other things just as common that kill far more people per year. That is what this ad is trying to remind us
Gun violence is the sign of a far greater universal problem in America today. Violence and gun violence specifically, is surrounded within, and spread all through every part of our society. All the reasons remain intimately related to the actual solution, which can only be a general solution one by treating it as one issue. The region that I live in is considered a peaceful part of Harvest, which I am particularly grateful about. I do not have to worry about gunfights in the roads of my community, nor maybe being helpless confronted by students with a gun at school. That, nevertheless, does not mean that my community is impermeable to gun violence. Huntsville has seen its share of gun violence from the incident at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), where three people were murdered and three others injured on February 12, 2010. Throughout the course of a routine gathering of the biology department attended by about 12 people, professor Amy Bishop stood up and began shooting those next to her with a 9-millimeter handgun (Hall 2010)
Many students in America, might consider school almost like a home because they spend about half a day in. We need students to be safe at school, so why not have an officer patrolling the hallways. To make the school much safer, the officers should have guns in case there is a threat towards the students. In the eyes of many United State citizens a gun can symbolize death; however, a gun can save several people’s lives. As U.S citizens, we have the right to keep and bear arms, so why do we not have police officers with guns patrolling schools. “Gun violence is a major social issue in America and American schools and university campuses have become targets of gun violence” (Bond). In the U.S we had several severe situations when someone comes to the school and starts to kill not only students, but teachers and staff, this could have been prevented if we were prepared and secured. Although the opposition may suggest it could be more dangerous to have an officer or guard be allowed with a gun; however, having an officer with a gun would decrease the number of shootings and other minor problems at schools.
In the Article titled “Our Gun-Control Laws are not Stopping Gun Violence,” the author, Jenny A. Durkan argues that tightening already existing gun laws is the most efficient way to stop gun violence (7). Durkan talks about how she received a gun at the age of 10 from her father. She was taught how to safely use clean and store the gun (2-3). Owning a gun at a very young age shaped Durkan’s stance on gun violence. Durkan argues that ultimately guns are falling into the wrong hands and that we must teach people about guns and the importance of gun safety (6). Durkan believes that tightening gun laws consists of gun restrictions, universal background checks, respecting laws enforcers and education (1-19). Durkan is certain that if her beliefs are implemented, guns will stop falling into the wrong hands.
Just imagine sitting in class one day and hearing a loud bang and the next moment there is a confusing, abrupt, commotion. Imagine walking into a movie theater and not walking out. It is hard to imagine things like this happening because we have never experienced these moments ourselves, but to victims of gun violence, these moments are familiar and very real. Gun violence is becoming too common in this country. So common, that when there is a shooting, people are unaffected by such news. There has been desire from the people of America to change gun policy, but there are also people that argue against this because it goes against our Second Amendment rights. Although there are reasonable arguments on behalf of and against more regulations on guns, more regulations and background checks would reduce crime and death due to guns.
Gun control has been a continued issue amongst politicians and civilians in the United States. The U.S. has a homicide rate twenty-five times the average of any other developed country in the world. Specifically, mass shootings have been in the limelight as of late due to the deadliest Las Vegas, Nevada shooting, along with Orlando, Florida, and Newtown, Connecticut being in the recent past. Aim has been set on the mentally ill for these mass shooting, and our gun control laws because of this. America agrees gun laws need to be strengthened, but how to do so is the problem ahead. The target should not be on the mentally ill due to their miniscule effect on gun violence.
Guns have been is society for centuries. They have been used for hunting, war, and even safety. However, in the past several years they have begun to take the lives of many innocent victims, often young children. In response to the killings in Newtown, Conn., it has been noted, “If this were a country, the number of children killed by gun violence would violate international law.” (Browne-Marshall) F.B.I. data shows in 2011, 1,668 African American children were killed due to guns. Day by day gun violence is rising and it is not only in ghetto neighborhoods.
This is the use of hard facts or evidence to persuade the reader to believe what the ad is showing. In this ad it gives a statistic of how people die each each in the UK due to smoking. 106,000 people each year in the United Kingdom die due to smoking. It is a common misconception that if an ad uses a statistic then automatically being used as logos, but that is not always the case. This statistic is being used as pathos because when the reader reads the statistic they will be emotionally shocked about how large the number is. Hopefully scaring the smoker or potential smoker to quit, before the number reaches
In the past decade or so, Americans had experienced epidemic level of gun violence taking place in every corner of country. Actually owning gun is legal in the USA, it’s actually our second amendment; the right to bare firearms. Approximately 300 million Americans held gun in their homes.
The attention surrounding the misuse of guns and how people are using them to slaughter other innocent individuals is at an all time high. This specific issue needs to be put on hold. How can we as a society tell our children when they grow up that they need to start wearing bullet proof jackets under their clothes in order to protect them from harm. The National Government needs to look into our second amendment and realize that we are in an era where it only takes one man or woman to perpetrate a mass shooting. Many innocent lives have been lost due to religious belief and terrorism. Although there are little children playing with bazookas and Ak-47s the police or army is nowhere to be found that could control the issue at hand. “Recent survey
The government works in different ways such as education to reduce shooting, rather than over depending on gun control policy.
In the recent years, the conversations of gun violence are increasing dramatically because of some homicide cases. Truly, the gun violence has been the one of biggest elements which threat both personal safety and national security in the United States. Website named Smartgunlaws.org stated that “Since 2015, the total number of incidents is 42,847; Number of deaths are 11,021; It is a really shocked statistics.” (Smartgunlaws.org,2012) It is a really shocked statistic that there are so many people died because of gun violence, but unfortunately there still some people don’t know what is gun violence. A professional editor Mascia defined that “Gun violence describes the results of all incidents of death or injury or threat with firearms without pejorative judgment within the definition. Violence is defined without intent or consequence as a consideration. To that end a shooting of a victim by a perpetrator is considered gun violence as is a defensive use or an officer involved shooting. The act itself, no matter the reason is violent in nature.” (Mascia, Fuhrman,2015).
Gun violence has been a great desolation to our society, dating back to the 1300’s when the first use of a fire arm was recorded. The establishment of guns from the early to modern stages has had significant changes in our society. As Kristof mentioned in the article, “too many schools and colleges devastated by shootings, watch too many students get an education in grief.” His efforts are to persuade gun privileges to be more stringent. On behalf of Kristof’s outlook on the situation I support his view. In order to carry out this cause guns should require gun insurance, ban guns for domestic violence offenders and limit guns per
When we hear the term gun control, we think of opposing sides of the topic arguing whether citizens should continue to have the right to bear arms or not, including the possible consequences of continuing the use of the second amendment. As we know, gun violence is one a the major political issues that has caused public corruption and still continue to this day. During Barack Obama’s eight year term of presidency, he announced his thoughts and plan for change on how to limit gun control violence. He discusses how gun control can affect the lives of citizens physical and mental health, along with overall lifestyle. Barack shares past tragedies of gun violence and how gun control has played a huge role into our society. Throughout this speech Barack Obama gives on gun control, he persuades the public by using ethos, pathos, and logos to highlight the important concepts for change of this amendment.
Although many people think that Americans are gun nuts, in reality they’re just all nuts. This realization was shown in the documentary Bowling for Columbine by Michael Moore. Throughout the film Michael Moore shows us many examples of why America has problems with guns. However after watching one realizes that the problem isn’t with guns but within the American people instead.
Most People support the fact that stricter gun control laws will reduce crime, but gun control laws only stop the harmless people from purchasing firearms. For a criminal, majority of their weapons will be bought illegally or through black market. Criminals will always have access to an arsenal of weaponry. Gun control laws will not stop them at any cost. For example, ever since the shootings of Columbine High School and Sandy Hook, mass shootings have increased significantly worldwide. Gun control has been proven to not be effective. A smarter idea would be to partially restrict firearm access to the public.
