Gun Control in America has been argued back and forth for decades past. On one side it is strongly believed that the Second Amendment suggests that individual citizens have a constitutionally protected right to own a gun and protect themselves. These individuals believe that gun control laws do not in fact reduce gun violence. On the other side it is said if Gun Control laws are enacted there would be less gun and school violence. Also, it would be harder for criminals and juveniles to obtain a firearm. Both sides have very valid arguments and historical evidence to back their positions on within this debate.

We have had several of the worst mass shootings in our nation's history in quick succession over the past few years. Certain legal restrictions and acts from our government could have prevented numerous deaths. Common sense background checks and limitations to cartridge size and assault weapons would surely have saved many lives at the Las Vegas Massacre, but certain men and women claim that these restrictions violate their second amendment right. They claim that guns aren't the problem. That guns don't kill people, people kill people. So limiting access to devastating guns is just avoiding the problem. The Second Amendment right presumably violated by common sense gun control is “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed” (Second Amendment). The Second Amendment states that for the need of a well regulated militia to protect the security of the free state and the right for the people to keep and bear arms. Militias have been inactive for decades so in a sense the intent of the amendment is no longer relevant. The Second Amendment states, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed” (United States Constitution), and yet instead of some people using their guns for self defense, they use it for mass shootings. Some argue that we already have gun control laws that don’t work, but others say if we had better gun laws than it would work. Gun control is a very big issue in the United States today. Many people don't agree with the gun control laws that they have today. Gun control laws only take guns away from law-abiding citizens. Many people have their own reasons for owning a gun. Why would the government want to make it harder for people to own a gun? People that own guns are not very likely to be attacked by criminals. Owning a handgun is one of the best ways of protection. The second amendment states "the right to bear arms" does this grant everyone a right to own a gun? Gun control laws have not been proven to do anything for citizens. Gun control laws just make it harder for a good guy to own a gun. Gun control laws are not a good idea.

This particular amendment has since then been a major part of American culture. Through the second amendment it has given American citizens freedom to buy firearms of any sort: AR-15s, AK-47s, handguns, and the like for self-defense. However, in light of the most recent mass shootings, people have felt that it is time to change if not regulate the freedom the second amendment grants. From an extreme conservative's perspective, gun control is a means of disarming the public and infringing the right the second amendment grants Americans. What this point of view fails to take into account is that gun control is not about infringing on any right or disarming American civilians. It is about restricting the access and sales of deadly firearms to potential felons who have the capability of using them to commit mass murder. Gun control is one of the most talked about topics in modern day America. 43 of 50 states have the right to bear arms. Most states have to background check you in order for you to purchase or sell guns. Some other states prevent carrying guns and some other ban assault rifle weapons. People who support the gun laws say that the second amendment was meant for militias and that gun restrictions have always existed. People who oppose that say that guns are needed for self-defense from people who invade houses or are actual threats. Although both of those are correct, there will always be two sides for control laws.

The Second Amendment protects an individual's right to own guns ; that guns are needed for self-defense from threats ranging from local criminals to foreign invaders; and that gun ownership deters crime rather that causes more crime. The issue with gun control laws is that people want to add more laws related to gun control because of the recent events happening in schools and public buildings. While many people are for gun control laws, based on information, we should not enact more gun laws because they need to be utilized for self defense and are required for hunting and sports.

In society today, there is a major problem with gun control. Over the years it has been a sequence of events that has occurred involving individuals taking their issues out on innocent people. When these firearms get into the wrong hands especially, people with social problems that is when catastrophe arises. These social problems can include, divorce, separation, mental, and physical abuse, and mental illnesses. Overall, these individuals with the social problem do not know how to handle their issues and problems without violence, and criminal acts upon others.

Opponents of gun control cite the Second Amendment as the most compelling defense for their argument. Those who oppose strict gun regulation fear that gun control will infringe upon, “law-abiding citizens' Second Amendment right to bear arms” (DiLascio). This is simply untrue. Article I, Section 8, Clauses 15 and 16 of the Second Amendment state that the Constitution gives Congress the ability to assemble a militia when national security is threatened and allows citizens to own firearms in order to protect themselves from government oppression (Bowman and Newton). According to the NRA, the Second Amendment of the Constitution guarantees individuals the right to own and carry guns. As stated by the supreme court, in District of Columbia v. Heller, the Second Amendment protects "the individual right to posses and carry weapons in case of confrontation” (NRA-ILA). Lastly, the NRA believes if everyone was capable of owning guns, they would be safer from criminals and bring the crime rate down. These are all understandable reasons for why people wish for guns to be made available to everyone, but there are other reasons that demonstrate the need for regulation.

Gun violence is a serious issue that has troubled cities across America. As a student, I go to my classes under the impression that educational institute that I am attending can keep me and other students safe. In 2017 it is almost impossible to go somewhere and feel safe. With recent events like the shooting at Ohio State University and UCLA, the idea of being safe on campus is no longer a reality for students like me. Many college campuses have implemented a concealed-carry policy to ensure the safety of faculty and students. In the article, Students Oppose Concealed Weapons on Campuses, writer Justin Doubleday states that, so far, this year 19 states have introduced legislation to allow concealed carry on public-college campuses (DoubleDay). Even though students would feel a lot safer with carrying a firearm, college students should not be allowed to carry firearms on campus. because It would increase more violence on campus.
