Growing up in a small town can lead to one having a very narrow-minded attitude. In a place where almost everyone is the same skin-color, has the same socioeconomic status, and follows the same way of thinking, anyone who fails to conform to the standard can be viewed as an outcast, subject to judgment from those who are looking in. I was someone who fell into this trap. I looked down upon people who were different from me, people who had vastly different ideas, dressed differently, or never tried to perform well in school. I failed to understand or welcome the distinctions between people, and never tried to get to know those who were so different from me. Then one day, when I was making a remark about a girl because she never tried in school, my dad said something that revolutionized my …show more content…
I became fully aware of the fact that some kids can't focus on schoolwork because they may be too consumed with a difficult home environment. Some people use drugs as an outlet for severe depression and anxiety, and they see it as the only way out of the pain and suffering. Others may dress or act differently as a way to express themselves when no one else listens. Some of these people are not worried about what grade they got on their math test - they’re worried about real, difficult life issues that they have to face every day. Opening my eyes to the world, I now never jump to conclusions about someone without first realizing that that person may be facing other problems at home or internally that I could never fathom facing. I’ve learned not to scrutinize, but to enjoy everyone for their diversity, and embrace that we all have something to teach and learn from one another, rather than single someone out for their differences. It isn’t fair to infer something about someone when the root of their differences may be due to grueling life experiences that they have to deal with every
I believe its bettter to live and grow up in a small town because its more maderen and quiet not much happens in a small town but word does spread fast and you know everyone youu go to school with some times your teacher might even been your softball coach or sport coach in general. If you were to live in a big city you wouldnt really have that conection with people like I do with people I know in my small town. Its not croweded its decent and relaxing but can get boring sometimes. Teachers may know your siblings becausee they had you as a student in that class when you were there age. Its more homie and not so as Im alone because here people would give you the shirts of there backs to help you or your family and thats hard to find in
Growing up, East Los Angeles was full of violence and danger. It was very difficult to walk down the street without being confronted by gang members. East Los Angeles has always been looked down upon because it’s a predominately community; as there are lots of stereotype’s that demean us. Thankfully, our police and sheriff departments have managed to lower the violence and murder rates. I want to continue keeping my community safe, my goal is to major in the criminal justice field, because I want the environment where my family and neighbors can grow up without feeling threatened. I want to set an example for my sibling’s, so they can make the safety of their community their priority. I want to provide aid to protect where I was raised. Students
Growing up as a young African American girl in Philadelphia was not always easy, however, having a strong family structure, old fashion southern culture, and beliefs have molded me into the strong women that I am today. Now that I am a mother, following my family’s culture and beliefs are not always the easiest thing to do. Times has changed and I feel like I am forced to conform to the everyday social norms of America, which makes me feel impuissance. Yes, growing up was not easy, but my family and youth kept me in the dark when it came to how society treats individuals of darker complexion, what to expect once I left the confines of my family and neighborhood, and how to befriend or interact with individuals of other racial groups. All of the things that I listed were things that I had to learn through trial and error, which makes life a little harder than it already is.
There’s a thing that most people don’t understand about people who deal with two different cultures. People with a split culture have to make their own mold, so to say; they have to learn from their own and others experiences to conform to a certain norm. Since different cultures have different social norms, you can’t behave unacceptably without being judged. People, who have never dealt with diverse communities, especially don’t understand why people act differently when they’re around unalike people. For example, my friends never understood why my parent didn’t allow me to go to places in high school such as football games, dances or even to my friends’ houses. They didn’t understand that my family was very conservative; however I don’t blame them for not knowing, since they haven’t experienced any diversity by living in a predominantly white area.
Growing up in San Francisco was not easy. My life has been a up hill battle. I’vealways been a free spirited person. Always loved sometimes loved the wrong people. I grew up in San Francisco. Most people think of San Francisco as this wonderful free love place. Well it’s not this wonderful free love place. Fillmore is what my neighborhood was called. This Fillmore place was a very dark violent place. Many don’t make it out. Either you die young, or you go out on drugs. I always wanted more out of life. I always felt that if I could escape this dark unkind place I would be a better person. Sometimes as a child I would dream of living in a real family setting. You know a father that lived with my mother and I. “A real family not a dysfunctional one”. School has always been a outlet for me. I could go to school and learn, learn, learn. I’ve always been
This is the typical response I get when I reveal to someone that there are ten kids in my family. When the shock subsides I am always bombarded with the same questions. "The same two parents? How big is your house? How many bedrooms are there? Are there any twins?" and more importantly, "How many bathrooms does your house have?" My personal favorite is, "Can you say all your siblings'
John Updike was born in Shillington, Pennsylvania on March 18, 1932. His father was a high school math teacher who supported the entire family, including his grandparents on his mothers side. As a child, Updike wanted to become a cartoonist because of The New Yorker magazine. He wrote articles and poems and kept a journal. John was an exceptional student and received a full scholarship to Harvard University. At Harvard he majored in English and became the editor of the Harvard newspaper. Upon graduation in 1954, he wrote his first story, Friends from Philadelphia, and sent it to The New Yorker. This started his career and he became one of the great award winning authors of our time.
In Our Town, Thorton Wilder, shows many different possible themes for the play. There's the theme of life, death, emotion, etc, etc. However, I will be looking at the theme that Wilder shows Our Town's understanding of life and death. This can be proven by examining the lives of Joe Crowell, Emily Webb, and Simon Stimpson. First, we are shown Joe Crowell, the town's paperboy.
“49 percent of students reported feeling “a great deal of stress” on a daily basis. Half reported doing three or more hours of homework per night, and 26 percent noted that they had been diagnosed with depression” (Ossola, 1). With all that is expected of students in school, some rules she be changed to reduce these crazy issues. If schools would reduce homework, start school later, changed dress codes, and extend lunches, student would thrive and succeed more in school.
Our Town is a rather unorthodox production. Most playwrights want to go for realism and detail, with huge scene sets or intricate scene changes. Not this one. In Our Town the author (Thornton Wilder) strives to create a play which does not need to rely on scenery and detail, but visualization and the investment of the audience. In this way there is nothing to distract from the core message or plot of the play. What this play does take to it’s advantage are sound effect; with the lack of props or scenery the sound effects give us the perfect amount of imagery to go on. Now within this script there are several directors in which have taken the play and made it their own. Out of three of the plays being: NBC's 1977 representation, PBS’s 1989 representation, and PBS’s 2003 representation. From these three representations one of theme most suitably gets a grasp of what Wilder was going for; simplicity, relatability, and imagery. PBS’s 2003 representation best defines what wilder's vision of his great play was.
Many families and individuals find themselves at some point questioning the advantages of city living versus country living. It is nearly impossible to find a good answer to this question. What is good for one person might not be good for another. Some people enjoy the busy, hyper active metropolitan city where they can use all amenities and have unlimited opportunities for work and leisure. At the same time, other people feel the urge to be closer to Mother Nature, relaxation, beauty, and peace. They take pleasure in living in the calm and peaceful environment of the countryside and spending their free time fishing, hiking, picking berries in the woods, or playing in the creek. In my opinion, the nature
I found Henry David Thoreau?s ?Where I Lived, and What I Lived For? made a very convincing argument. He has many examples to support his beliefs. Thoreau stresses the importance and value of living the simplest life nature affords, which I believe is as important now as it was in his day.
Running away from home can be exhilarating, while you get into trouble, make life decisions, and drink the regrets away. “Growing Up Amish” by Ira Wagler is taken back to the 1970s and follows into the 1980s about an amish boy named Ira Wagler. Yes, the author is the main character making this book actually a memoir. This book was taken place in Canada, in a small amish town named Aylmer, which is pretty close to London, Ontario. Growing up, Ira always was taught the traditional amish ways, but in that path through the amish world, he found himself becoming lost. Not physically lost, but mentally. He felt as if he had bigger and better things he could do outside of his quarantined town, Aylmer. At only 17 years old, Ira, decided to take off and run. He didn’t say goodbye to any family, nothing. All he left for them to find is a small note. He now has left for the first of many times trying to find who he really is. Ira left and came back multiple times thinking that maybe if he keeps on trying to go through the amish life, that maybe one of those times it would hit him. Maybe that one of those times he will want to be amish for the rest of his life. The last time he came back he thought
Remember when we were young and all we could think of was growing up and getting to do ‘grownup’ things? We spent our whole childhood thinking of what we would do when we finally ‘grew up’, and here we are, almost completely grown up and we still haven’t made up our mind of what it is we will do when we grow up. We’ve painted this pretty little picture in our head of what it’ll be like when we eventually do grow up, and when it finally comes for the picture to be taken off the wall and put into action, it’s not nearly as fun as creating the painting.
My personal connection to this topic is my pain. I know, I know, we all have to deal with it, but just think, do we really have to deal with it? I mean, if we contacted the right people and got a bunch of people to join into our campaign, I’m sure it would work out.I’m just sick and tired of getting terrible grades on tests because I don’t get enough sleep, and then I lose focus in class. Because I lose focus in class, I have to do all my studying at home. I have all these after school activities I have to do, and then I have to come home and study. You might think I’m wrong, but that’s a ton for a teen to handle. With everything piled on top of each other, teens could get a bunch of anxiety. If more people get invested into this topic, then maybe teens all around the globe would be smarter.
