In my small group for the film project analysis project I worked with four other students, Deonte, Frank, Osama, and Stephen. The specific purpose that we came together for was to analyse the film, Oz, The Great and Powerful and identify the different properties of communication in the film and how they were used. We held our group meetings after class three times and once before class. Our group had no clear leader, and instead each member was self-directed, and instead our group came to a general consensus at each meeting as to how tasks should be divided and what should be done before the next meeting. While there were significant setbacks to our group’s progress, aside from one anomaly our group worked well together and had only one major conflict. During our first meeting, we introduced ourselves, established our channels of communication, and determined the medium for presenting our group project. Our first meeting combined the opening and feedforward stages of the five small group stages. We decided to communicate through both group text and email, that way we would have multiple ways to communicate to …show more content…
Osama was the information giver, distributing the movie to each group member, and clarifying bits of the movie’s plot and characters. Stephen was the energizer, as he tended to be the person who kept us focused on the project when we started to drift of topic. I was the procedural technician for the group, creating the Google Slides document, connecting everyone to the document so everyone could work on it, and getting the clips from the movie together for the presentation. Deonte often played the role of recorder, as he wrote most of the group’s progress reports and wrote most of the notes about who was doing what task. We all played the role of initiator-contributor, as everyone came up with at least one idea for topics or how to present the
Our group worked on all the components of the project together, which included the research, reference pages, scripts, and the PowerPoint. I believe our decision to not assign specific tasks to a single individual allowed us to fully understand all the information and get along better due to the fact we all were doing the same amount of work. In a group setting, we had to work together and communicate with one another in order to create a suitable presentation. One thing I saw that our group thrived at was listening to one another. Our book defines listening as the “active, complex process that consists of being mindful, physically receiving messages, selecting and organizing messages, interpreting messages, responding, and remembering (Wood, 2016).” Each group member had to
My analysis is on the film The Goonies. While I view the movie and determine the various norms, behaviors, roles and interaction between group members, as well as individuals the examination within the realm of film can present many of the same components. Thus, our group selected this movie to analyze based on its formation of a cohesive problem-solving group full of unforgettable characters. The Goonies portray many different theories and aspects of small group communication.
The five stages of developing groups is an important part of the position. In many cases it is the relationships that a person will have with other individuals who will determine the best members to put into the different groups. As well, the different skill sets that individuals have are also an important part in placing group members together. The observation of the first groups placed together will be a good gauge in learning how some of the individuals work and observing how others work well together. The group size should be eight to 10 people to facilitate greater ease of equal participation among the individuals.
For this class project, I think my group worked well together on the assignments. We all saw we had responsibilities and were expected to do our own parts for each assignment we worked on. For each assignment, we would split it equally among us and used a tool called Google Docs so we were each on our own computers but working together on one file. Google Docs really made the process easier with reviewing all the information and having it all in one file. If any questions came up we had a group text to communicate when we weren’t on campus grounds for class.
Using Tuckman’s (1965) model of group development, our first session can be considered as our “forming stage.” This was on the basis that it involved introducing ourselves to one another and to quote Price (2001): “we created and negotiated an

My group consisted of four other members-Christy, Daniel, Brian, and Allison. When we were first introduced to the idea of a small group project we knew that our presentation had to entertain the audience, and at the same time inform them. At that point, we were functioning as individuals. Each of us tossed out a ton of ideas and some were shot down right away. That took about 5minutes. Then Daniel mentioned that we can do a parody of the television show Change of Hearts, and it stuck to us like glue. Gradually we began to feed into his revelation, and started to add our personal touches. Each of us became elaborators. For about 15 minutes we took the idea and expanded it to see where it could lead
Communication between group members was essential to complete this project well and in a timely matter. We used the GroupMe phone application to discuss developments to the project and obstacles encountered. When group members could not meet during class, I made sure to get them caught up through the GroupMe app immediately. I feel my leadership and organization was necessary to get certain group members to contribute to the project. Overall, I was satisfied with the group
The project members were quickly able to establish group communication means using a messenger program, and the group resources provided by Blackboard, allowing for instant recognition of messages and/or questions as well as an increasing interaction among the members. The data collected and evaluated by one member could easily be shared, and built upon by the other members. A common goal was shared among the members, and every member contributed greatly to the
When the project was first introduced, I was not happy and thought that it was just going to be another boring project, but as we continued to work and I began to understand the project better, it became much more interesting and I ended up really enjoying the process. I was in the social sciences group and at first, my group and I thought it was going to be easy, but the more we worked and talked to other groups, the more complicated it started to become. We realized that there are lots and lots of pieces that must fit together to form a perfect society. We really struggled with the other groups because they all disagreed with us including mentally ill and none of the groups were very understanding about our needs. They all asked “why do we
Our team name is Group 6. The following individuals are a part of this team: Katelyn Fox, Ryan Dickman, Vincent Mahr, and Conor Knox.
“This is going to be a group project.” Most students dread hearing those words. I know that I groan inside because I think group projects are awkward and slightly unfair. Considering that more and more teachers are assigning group projects more often, I decided to look into the benefits of group projects. After doing a simple Google search, I realized that students gain many skills and learn important lessons when doing group projects.
Throughout the semester, working in groups for different projects and in class work has been a good experience. Group projects can either have a positive or negative impact on work ethic depending on a person's work drive. Group projects are beneficial because they put thoughts and ideas of different people together and thus help students to learn more about both their group members and the topic of assignment for the group.
The fifth stage of the team model is ‘implementation’. Timing is very crucial at this stage. My group members were much disciplined and we all performed our roles accordingly. In our second group meeting, we decided that all work must be sent to a group member who will be designing the PowerPoint slides. In the third meeting each of us critically looked through the information to make sure we agree with them and that the information is supported by evidence from reputable authors. The only problem my group experienced was time management. Some of the group members come really late to meetings which causes delay in doing the work.
The main factor that had a negative effect on the team performance was the communication process. During and between meetings, the discussion was led by students 4 and 5. Early in the group work, new ideas that were presented by students 1, 2 and 3 were denied by students 4 and 5. This type of incidents that had
