Hamlet is undeniably an epic among all plays. Shakespeare’s command of storytelling and the meticulously sculpted layers of the play add to the sheer grandeur of the life of Hamlet and the multitude of forces acting against him. The complex dialogue, the magnificent story arches, and the archetypal themes are all essential to the understanding and enjoyment of Hamlet, but there is one particular subject matter that The Bard placed at the center of all the conflict and emotion of the play: grief. Hamlet is particularly tense in this scene, and the coalesced emotions of sadness and anger cause him to be pushed over the edge emotionally. While the Ghost of his father appears blatantly in his vision, Queen Gertrude does not see the phantom. Up until this moment in the play, Hamlet’s insanity was a mask he wore to distract his opponents. As Queen Gertrude bluntly remarks in this scene, “Alas, he’s mad” (Shakespeare 3.4. 121), it does seem that Hamlet has truly succumbed to weight of grief. This apparition (or hallucination as the more skeptical approach) is caused by Hamlet’s grief-ridden mind not being able to empty its oversaturated walls. This is not only a literary plot device, Shakespeare must have been prematurely aware of the real-life “grief hallucinations” as Vaughan Bell calls them. “Grief hallucinations are a normal reaction to bereavement but are rarely discussed, because people fear they might be considered insane or mentally destabilised by their loss” (Bell). This brings to question Hamlet’s sanity even before he “snaps”. Is the first appearance of the Ghost even real? Or is it some kind of folie à deux with other watchmen present? She explains that there is no correct way or time to grieve; the stages are used to familiarize people with the aspects of grief and grieving. When looking at Hamlet, one could say that William Shakespeare put the play together as a very cathartic tragedy. The emotional result of dealing with so many deaths brings on a plethora of emotions which are not usually felt in a typical play. Hamlet begins not with the normal prosperity and good fortune as do most tragedies, but with a more stifling and depressing sort of mood (Tekany 115). However, something else could be said about this play as well. The play centers on Hamlet and his existential characteristics, such as angst, isolation and his confrontations with nothingness. In Shakespeare's Hamlet, Laertes and Hamlet both lose a father by unnatural and sudden death. The unnatural death of the father is brought on by someone close to the son. When Laertes discovers that his father is dead, he is outraged. When Hamlet learns from the ghost of his father's murder, he weeps, and promises action, though he delivers none. Both Laertes and Hamlet grieve deeply for their fathers, but Laertes acts upon this grief while Hamlet carefully plots his revenge and waits for the perfect moment to avenge King Hamlet. But we are not here only to mourn, but to reminisce the times we have spent with him, both the good and the bad and to remember him as the person he was.
