This short story follows an experienced hunter named Rainsford who becomes stranded on a deserted island where he becomes hunted by a character named Zaroff. However, by remaining calm in this bizarre and dangerous circumstance, Rainsford outwits the experienced Zaroff using traps and eventually kills him. However, what caused Zaroff to commit something so unimaginably sinister, that even a stolid hunter like Rainsford gapes at its insidiousness. I am speaking of hunting.” “Hunting? Great Guns, General Zaroff, what you speak of is murder.” (10) (AN) In this quote, General Zaroff displays his relaxed and carefree attitude towards the killing of other human beings in this quote by the implied connotation of his words. By having such nonchalant tone on such an insidious viewpoint proves that Zaroff has a much different mindset than mainstream society who views his actions as sinister. Zaroff’s internal aspirations and ideas on murder are very present in his non-conformist style of “hunting.” (Trans) While hunting Zaroff also shows his motivations for doing so. (CD) During the first day of the hunt Zaroff unknowingly has Rainsford cornered up a tree, however, once Zaroff sees Rainsford he pretends not to notice, “It was General Zaroff. He made his way along with his eyes fixed in concentration … the sharp eyes of the hunter stopped before they reached the limb where Rainsford lay; a smile spread over his brown
“I can’t believe you are serious, General Zaroff. This is a grisly joke.” The Most Dangerous Game is a short story by Richard Connel. In the story, a famous hunter named Rainsford tragically falls off his yacht and has to swim to an infamous island known as Ship-Trap Island. During the rest of the story, Rainsford meets a crazy hunter, finds out the secrets of the island, and has to use his hunting skills to stay alive. I believe that Zaroff’s and Rainsford’s conflicting views on the ethics of hunting will cause tension between them and make the story more exciting and full of action.
This quote likewise uncovers that "chasing" and slaughtering people is a diversion for General Zaroff and is messed with extremely by him. Additionally, amid their discussion General Zaroff expressed, "This is the reason I utilize them. It gives me joy. They can reason, after a design." (pg.26) When perusing this quote it ought to convey chills to you in light of the way broad Zaroff discusses different people. He alludes to them along the lines of creatures that he is chasing, in this way ending the lives of people doesn't trouble him at all. He likewise says toward the end of the quote that murdering people conveys joy to him, which breaks practically every moral code of
In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” the author, Richard Connell, does an outstanding job of portraying the bizarre adventure of an insane, however experienced hunter, General Zaroff. The protagonist, Rainsford, another experienced hunter from New York City, appears on General Zaroff’s island, explores, and eventually encounters with Zaroff. They introduce themselves, settle down, and begin to talk. During the talk with the general, Rainsford soon learns that the General was not only a hunter; but a murderer as well. Zaroff has lured and ceased many sailors to his island to play a game. Although, they did not hunt with the General, the General hunted them! Zaroff claimed that hunting “had become too easy”, therefore, hunting began
In the story Zaroff thinks it's not a problem if he kills the innocent people for fun. This mindset of his is openly showing signs of being a protagonist and going to do evil things throughout the story. In his conversation with Rainsford he clearly states that, "Life is for the strong, to be lived by the strong,, andif needs be, taken by the strong.” He states that he should be aloud to kill just because in his mind only the strong people in the world have the will to live. When Zaroff says "Thank you, I'm a hunter, not a murderer." Also states that he thinks that he's not a murderer he's simply a hunter. Which means in his way of thinking or the way he looks at it what he's doing is not wrong he's hunting them, trying to figure out whose strong and who is not. He decides to hunt humans because he says there the only match for him no other animal is enjoyable for him to hunt. He has the sense of superiority that humans were the only thing left. Zaroff then states “The weak of the world were put here to give the strong pleasure.” He thinks his actions are justifiable and that that's what the weak people are here for to give the more stronger and equip people pleasure. Zaroff then says “I am strong. Why should I not use my gift? If I wish to hunt, why should I not?” In his mind since he is a good strong hunter why should not he be able to hunt he calls this a gift and takes a lot of pride in it. This is another statement he says showing he thinks what he is doing is good, eliminating what he says “scum of the earth” so the strong are the ones to live.
Imagine turning up on an island with a psychotic man, a man who hunts humans. This is what General Zaroff does, on Ship-Trap-Island. General Zaroff is a rich hunter who hunts most animals, even the most dangerous. This is the story written by Richard Connell, called The Most Dangerous Game, It is about a psychotic man with a hunting obsession. Once Zaroff gets bored with the hunting animals he turns to something new, humans. The author thinks that hunting is normal, that people have a killer instinct. That it is our human nature to hunt, and kill. The author also thinks that it is human nature to look for new challenges and to live strong. Much like Zaroff, the author believes life, is for the willing.
Hunting big game animals for sport was a popular pastime with the wealthy classes following World War I. The morality of killing for sport was not questioned in reality, but in this short story the author does question it by taking it a step further and having the protagonist, Sangor Rainsford, hunted by the antagonist, General Zaroff. In a short story full of irony, one of the greatest ironies of Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” is that General Zaroff repeatedly tells Rainsford that he maintains a sense of civilization on his island.
Connell first demonstrates the General’s proud heart on page seventy. There is a conversation between Rainsford and General Zaroff and Rainsford starts with the question, “But the animal, General Zaroff? Oh, it supplies me with the most exciting hunting in the world… But no animal can reason, … there is one that can. But you can’t mean - And why not?” The General is referring that he resulted into hunting humans. Earlier, he expresses how this sport was becoming tedious and needed something that can reason, which no animal can do, except humans; without reluctance, he turns to them to fulfill his personal needs. General Zaroff is a part of World War I before he returns to hunting. Because of his experiences in the war, he believes that it is acceptable to murder human beings out of pleasure, while Rainsford disagrees. Overall, General Zaroff is betraying his egotistic side by being willing to kill humans for his
Rainsford thought what Zarroff did was murder, not hunt. “Hunting? Good God, General Zaroff, what you speak of is murder.” (Connell 34). Rainsford was repealed by the fact that general kills humans for fun. Rainsford was shocked that Rainsford kills humans. Rainsford was stating that he was not a murderer he was a hunter. “Thank you, I'm a hunter, not a murderer.” (Connell 34). He'd rather be himself (a hunter) instead of like him(a murderer). Rainsford was shown all the human heads taken by Zarroff. “I want to show you my collection of heads. Will you come to me to the library?” “I hope said rainsford, “that you will excuse me tonight, general zaroff. I’m really not feeling at all well” (Connell 29). Rainsford doesn't like his ways so he wouldn’t want to be like him. Rainsford does not want to be like general Zarroff because the human heads Zarroff had disgusted
General Zaroff is ruthless in his hunt. He hunts sparingly with his prey, dangerous prey. ‘“Here in my preserve on this island, he said.” In the same low tone ”I hunt more dangerous game”’ (Cornell 5). Zaroff is ruthless, because he doesn’t care about the animal he cares about the kill. Even though he is ruthless he is bloodthirsty for his
"Character is what you are in the dark." is a quotation from "The Most Dangerous Game." This quotation means that when people don't see you, you are the real you. If no one is there to reward or punish you, you will act how you want. In "The Most Dangerous Game" when Rainford is alone on the island he tries to think of a way to escape General Zaroff. He makes intelligent actions and it is only when he thinks he has no other choice when he kills Zaroff.
