I learned so much about the things I was capable and not capable to do and about the foundation of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority Inc. The lovely ladies of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority Inc. always made me feel very comfortable to the point that I was able to be myself around them. However, when I tried that with the other sorority members it did not felt the same way. The other sorority made me feel left out and uncomfortable when being around them and that’s something that Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority Inc. did not. Being able to talk one on one, ask for help and talk to the ladies like a regular friend was one of the reason why I chose Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority

In order to get information for my paper, I interviewed someone with a position of authority within Tri Delta. Her name is Danielle, and she is the new member educator. The first thing I learned about Tri Delta is that it is more than just letters on a shirt, songs and chants, a gold pin, socials, rituals, an obligation, or a way of life. “Being in a sorority is about learning about people and being able to give without expecting a return. Tri Delta has allowed me to find lifelong friends and find confidence in myself as well as in my sisters,” Danielle explained. After hearing her explanation, I couldn’t agree more. Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Incorporated purpose is to be of service to all mankind dealing with critical issues in communities domestically and internationally. What I have grown to understand an envision a woman of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated to be, I accredit largely to the ladies of the Gamma Theta chapter. Members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated have made everlasting effects on my life. Having mentors in this fraternity allowed me to see how every member feels responsible for improving the communities that they are from. They never hesitate to take the leadership roles that are needed to see change. I would like to become a member of Alpha Phi Alpha because it would allow us to share a brotherhood with great men, it will allow me to make valuable connections with other positive men around the world, and it will help me become the best version of myself. My desire to become a member of this fraternity began my freshmen year after I attended the first informational meeting. At this meeting I was able to speak with members and also learn from them. They each have strong leadership characteristics that allow them to serve on executive boards across campus and they all are high achieving students at Cornell.

When one first thinks of Greek life or a sorority the only thing that comes to mind is the social aspect. Most people don’t think of sororities as social institutions that envelop their own culture, with mannerisms, languages and customs that are unique to each individual organization. However, these institutions promote a common set of values that enable members to become connected in a way that has a more profound meaning than just social interaction. Greek organizations are good examples of how institutions can affect and be affected by social status and roles within the collegiate community. They are also a prime example of how race, class and gender can affect a social setting in both positive and negative manners.

The total population of students in University of Miami is 10,615 undergraduate students, with a diversity of 55% (https://welcome.miami.edu/about-um/fast-facts/student-enrollment/index.html). 2,500 students are a part of Greek with 29 Greek Letter Organization (http://doso.studentaffairs.miami.edu/units/greek-life/index.html). There are nine sororities at University of Miami, which potential new member can rush sororities starting in spring of first year (http://doso.studentaffairs.miami.edu/units/greek-life/councils-chapters/index.html). A sister may tell one that a sorority may appear as a partying thing, but in reality a sorority is a group that gives back to the community while having fun at the same time. Many resources do not talk about sororities in general. The resources mentioned a special group called the Divine Nine. Together these nine societies make up what is known as the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) (Barker 17). The NPHC contributes abundantly to the community from: improving health care, raising scholarship funds, and promoting literacy to working for women’s rights, aiding the NAACP, and organizing social justice and civil rights, … (Fine 2). There are only four societies in the Divine Nine that are sororities. These were the first sororities formed on college campuses and have successfully made a massive impact in every community.

One of the biggest stereotypes about being in a fraternity or sorority is that you party and drink a lot. Drinking alcohol is not a focal point of Greek life, although alcohol is at almost every social occasion in Greek life. Many women admit that they in fact feel safer on their own turf because they are familiar with the house, they also have the say with what happens and can have more control. While many Sorority women feel perfectly safe going to parties in Fraternity homes, there are many that do not and many that would just like the option to host a party or have over male friends. I think that everyone could find a group that would welcome them. I didn’t think that I was a sorority girl at all. While I like to dress cute sometimes, I am more of a tomboy, because I like to fish, go ride four wheelers, and play sports. I thought a sorority wouldn’t be a place that I would fit in. It is definitely not the stereotypical sororities here.

Stereotypes that I have heard about Greek Life include that it is just about partying and the members are fake or catty. To challenge this stereotype I would lead by example to prove to others that Greek Life does not focus on partying, but in fact focuses on forming friendships, learning, and helping others. By showing others that those in Greek Life are more focused on school and philanthropy it can have an affect on changing this stereotype for many Greek organizations. There is also a very common stereotype that girls in sororities are catty or fake. To challenge this stereotype at Gonzaga I would show other students that members of Alpha Pi Phi are dedicated to forming a strong sisterhood that values uniqueness and diversity. Over several decades, Greek life has been an integral part of colleges and universities throughout the United States. There is a high demand of “fitting in” in today’s society and a question that students, parents, and teachers alike often ask themselves is, “Does Greek life provide a more safe or harmful environment?” With strong evidence, it is absolutely absurd to believe that fraternities and sororities do more good than they do harm. Various statistics provide factual evidence as to why Greek life is a toxic and dangerous environment for many young adults. Between the rape culture, hazing, and delinquency linked to the students associated with Greek life, it is time that it comes to an end for good so that students may have a more safe and enjoyable college experience. Fraternities and Sororities should be banned off of college and university campuses due to the danger and drama associated with them.

The political cartoon and the magazine article both have a pessimistic view of Greek life that strives to uncover truths about sororities but their intentions and audiences slightly differ. Both author’s intended audience are college students. The website, Her Campus, is intended for women in college and often aims to answer their concerns and provide advice. The article is designed to inform the reader of the negatives associated with Greek life, providing them with information if they are considering going through recruitment. While it does point out the flaws of the greek system, at the end the author does acknowledge the idea that a sorority can be a “great community within your school” and that sometime the secrets are what make each chapter unique. Since the author admits this after she spells out the secret of sororities, it shows that she is not abhorring on them but rather trying to
